Just one? He was probably one of those oddball gamer dragonflies, hoping to snag a few minutes of playtime.

I had a workstation set up in my garage. Every year, about midsummer, a dragonfly would fly up in front of my face, hover, checking out what I was doing onscreen for about 10-15 seconds, then leave. Coolest freaking thing ever. Must have been something about the refresh rate or colours, but still hilarious.

That sounds right. I'll just go to the river down the street and catch some I guess. It's likely I won't have to, because I'm making the pond fairly natural, so dragonflies will probably stock it with nymphs by themselves. I won't be buying any from out of state, or even out of my county, that's for certain.

Yeah, I only did a bit of research and I don't know how trustworthy the sites are, but that is exactly what people are afraid of; that any you buy are most likely a non-native species, since there are more than 5000 species of the things.

Nice. I might have to stock my new pond with them to keep mosquitos from developing into a problem. I have mosquito fish and gold fish in there already, but more=better.
Why do you think it's not good to release them? We have dragonflies here, but are you thinking an invasive sub-species might harm the natives?

You can actually buy live dragonfly nymphs online. It's probably not a good idea to release them into the wild, but you could watch them kick ass around your aquarium.

I wish they had used a fly in the pea shooter to prove (or disprove) their theory that the dragonfly identifies the object.

Still neat stuff. I love dragonflies. They're brutal predators and beautiful.

As a young newt, I spent many a day hunting dragonflies down at the creek and in the bogs. I've always found them fascinating, and still think their wings are some of the most beautiful structures in nature. (and they're crunchy too, yum!)

I miss the hummingbird "family" from the trees in front of my former house but I now see hummers AND dragonflies in my current locale. Last week I noticed a wasp nest ... possibly IN my front window frame [on the outside of course]. Called the leasing office and informed them I'm deathly allergic to stings. Hopefully they'll get right on that!
