Pixels Trailer

ChaosEngine says...

ughhhh. The premise has potential, but then they've given it to Adam Sandler.

Nope.

I'll just watch Wreck it Ralph again instead.

And between this, X-men and Destiny, I'm starting to think Peter Dinklage just got really lucky with Tyrion, because he's displayed an alarming lack of taste since GoT.

Homeless Man Sees 'Do Gooder' Video For What It Is

Good one, I was not thinking of that point.
I was focused on his attitude. That being said, kudos to him for not taking handouts and living his life his way, as a homeless man.

Neil deGrasse Tyson explains meaning of life to 6 year old

kceaton1 says...

Believe it or not, I think I was already wondering about those type of topics at that age (as I had always been a HUGE space and science fan, I knew by age "3" essentially that I wanted to be an Astronaut; which I'm sure my parents got a kick out of).

However, here is the problem with asking that/those type of questions (as I believe many people have more than likely been down this road). The community and the adults around you shape parts of your reality AND how you decide to continue to ask or answer that question(s). In my case, the problem was: religion. The answer to ALL my questions back then were: religion...

It wasn't until I was around 16 that I became highly suspicious and then began to bring up ALL of these questions I had "thought" WERE answered...but, they weren't at all. Finally by the age of 18 (into 19) I had shaken off the chains of religion that had held me down and to this day I have to wonder what would have become of me, what COULD have become of me, if I had an educated answer to my questions and not merely the answer that is given by those that don't know (a.k.a., I hate to say it, but it IS true: the stupid or ignorant people).

Religion DID, however, give me answers to some things I couldn't have gotten anywhere else. But, in the long run I must admit that--while a small amount of good came from it--it truly didn't out-weigh the tremendous amount of damage that had been done to me (as I bet others can attest to this being true for them as well). I was forced to go backwards through my entire life and then question myself on everything I believed and stood for, including "facts" and other such things that science uses as foundational elements--but, religion uses belief in the same manner as "facts" (as we were taught in some cases to say that we "knew" or "know" that something is true, rather than using "believe", "thought", or had "faith"...pretty shady right?!). This took a very long time, years on end, to finally "un-clutter" my mind.

Now I'm left wondering how well I would have done without all that nonsense pored into my mind DAILY (as I attended seminar...).

So I appreciate Neil's answer here in many ways. He is telling this kid to explore the world around him and to some degree, don't obey everything you are told (so long as it isn't dangerous). He is absolutely right. I merely wish I had people that told me the same things. As I didn't get "this idea" until FAR later in life (since my mind becomes "infatuated" with questions and ideas, getting the religious answer to my questions prompted me to literally think of everything possible within the religion to make things work "logically", and I was very much "zealot" like...because as I said, these questions consume me, so I cannot help but BE a "zealot")...

But, eventually I had a Physics class and that re-opened everything. I started to ask those questions again and NOW I found a new answer to what I had previously been told. The huge difference this time was: facts and proof; and also that it is all derived from logic. Physics was essentially undeniable. You could not refute it, because this was how we made things work around the world--via engineering--the math within it is used to control, make, and imagine anything you wish to engineer (or if you wish to do an experiment). I already had major issues with religion, but I was making logical "excuses" to make it work. But, with this huge influx of knowledge everything changed (how I wish we would have had Physics in Junior High; why do we not...don't we want engineers?).

I hate to add religion into this topic, but I thought it good to point out that this kid may be heavily influenced by Neil. This conversation that Neil directs towards him may end up being one of the most important events in his life. Just as mine was when I asked certain questions, I received religious based answers...practically deciding the path I would take...at least while I was a child/kid. But, had I been a slightly more stupid or just ignorant person, then I would still, right now, believe fully in religion.

So, when a child asks you ANY question like this do not joke around about it--while it is cute, you must remember that YOU are shaping their future and their destiny...

Bill Nye: The Earth is Really, Really Not 6,000 Years Old

shinyblurry says...

I feel the same way Bill Nye does; I don't think they should teach Darwinian evolution to children. It is especially damaging to children to adopt the belief that they are a random accident with no purpose or meaning to their lives rather than a special creation of God, made in His image, and created to fulfill the destiny He planned for them.

Bill seems to think that those who believe in God are simply too weak to accept the idea that we are all glorified apes living on a random mudball, but that isn't true for me or the other Christians I have met. People believe that God exists because an honest conviction, not because they are intimated by the philosophical blackhole that a belief in strict naturalism ultimately leads to. I was a true believer in the secular creation narrative before I came to know that God exists. I was resigned, as some of you are, to die an ultimately meaningless death. I changed my mind because of the evidence revealed to me, not because I was scared about my future.

I'm sorry your Mom died, but what you have is an anecdote.

I'm sure your perceived experience means a lot to you, but the most probable answer is pretty simple: you imagined it. Human memory is incredibly fallible and at times of emotional stress even more so. There have been numerous studies that have shown this.

And yes, science can't explain everything.... yet. But that doesn't mean we just get to fill in the blanks.

There is no "fact" that there is "something beyond us". In fact, everything we know has shown that there almost certainly isn't anything beyond us (at least in a supernatural sense).

Meanwhile, where's our resident young earther? Cmon @shinyblurry. Bill Nye is calling you out.

"Stupidity of American Voter," critical to passing Obamacare

shinyblurry says...

Hi Bob,
I am not apologizing for speaking about the Lord, I am apologizing for my bad behavior. Whatever the denizens of the sift may be like, God didn’t tell us to condemn them. He told us to love them and pray for them. I don’t know about you but I need the Lords help every day. The scripture says that even while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. For us and for them. Before I was saved, I had many of the same thoughts and feelings as the people here do. Maybe you can’t relate but God is able to reach the most hardened among us, even those you vehemently disagree with. He reached me, and He can reach them. If you’re concerned about their eternal destiny then show them the love of Christ because that is something that reaches people. Love is the universal language and everyone can recognize when they’re being loved sincerely.

What dumb idiocy thought are you saying.

Never apology to this Anti GOD site. They are lost soles and are laughing all the way to hell. They laugh at GOD. They are like the Pharisees and Sadducees standing at the Jordan river when Jesus got baptized and he ascended to heaven. GOD could be standing right in front of them and they still would not believe.

Never budge an inch for these jackals, especially Voodooh. He is no more a crybaby bully.

GOD is real. There is no debate.

Liberalism is very open minded and tolerant as long as you believe they they think.

You thought right.

In a fitting coincidence, today was the last day of prep before my first class of students arrives on Monday. I took a job as a high school science teacher at a school for kids who have been kicked out of their zoned schools for academic and behavioral issues--students others have written off and worse. I've been watching and passing around the Taylor Mali and Rives performances all week. After years fighting what I now believe to have been my destiny all along, for the first time in a long time, I feel I am doing what I am supposed to be doing.

Thanks for the heads-up on the link.

Gotham - Extended Trailer

ChaosEngine says...

Please tell me this isn't "Batman Kids" or something.

Listen up, comic book peoples. Drop the goddamn everything is all connected at the origin plot device.

Man of Steel did it and did it badly; Kal-El isn't just superman, he's Krypton Jesus.

The Amazing Spiderman did it and completely fucking missed the point of Spiderman; Peter Parker becomes Spiderman because of genetic destiny instead of, ya know, accepting that responsibility comes with power(which is only his fucking motto).

Even Hulk did it.

And now we see that Bruce Wayne interacts with Catwoman, and the Riddler etc as a child? sigh...

On the other hand... yay Major Rawls is back!

So I'm with @RFlagg on this one. Not expecting much, but willing to be pleasantly surprised.

Moyers | P. Krugman on how the US is becoming an oligarchy

Yogi says...

Like the argument that the US is becoming an Empirical state you can trace it's beginnings back to the founding of the nation. As far as we know there's been no other nation that has been founded to become an Empire. With it's Manifest destiny and needing to control it's hemisphere, the US started it's infant life as an Empire. Heck you can even see it in the architecture of it's capital.

Same with Oligarchy, the Senate was always meant to have more control and power and be run by the Owners of the Society. However while this isn't a new argument it has rarely in our history been more brazen than it's becoming now. Which is why the Occupy Movement got started, and it's not over by a long shot.

The battles in the coming few years will influence the direction of our country and the world at large incalculably. It's going to get interesting, and honestly I'm quite excited.

And while we're at it, one could make the argument that the US already is an oligarchy.

TDS 2/24/14 - Denunciation Proclamation

Trancecoach says...

" I just quoted you claiming that Napolitano believes that the Lincoln pursued the war to restore the union, when that's exactly what he's not saying here."

Where did you quote me? I missed that.

I am not "attacking" the "comedians." I quoted/"plagiarised" Thomas DiLorenzo who pointed out "[Jon Stewart's] "hit" was about how the Judge wrote in one of his publications that the U.S. probably could have ended slavery the same way that New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, New Jersey, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and all the other Northern states did, as well as the British empire, Spanish empire, the French, Danes, Dutch, Swedes, and others during the nineteenth century did: namely, peacefully. . . . " and that Stewart (in his inimitable wisdom as an historical scholar) was wrong in his assertion that war was the way to go.

And, whatever Lincoln's reasons were for going to war, of course there are always options other than imperialism (despite what manifest destiny might have you believe). Same as Truman having options other than nuking Japan. Or Bush the second having options other than invading Iraq and Afghanistan.

Whatever Lincoln's "reasons" were for going to war and thereby leading to the slaughter of 620,000 people and the maiming/disfigurement of over 800,000+ others, these reasons are not the same as what his options were, and the white washing of history does not change this very basic fact.

Taint said:

Since this topic appears to have gone off the reservation, let me reign you back in for a moment.

I encourage you to re-watch the video we're commenting on.

This whole discussion, including the commentary by Jon Stewart on the Daily Show, is all a response to Judge Napolitano's comments, on what is supposed to be an actual news network and, I imagine, supposed to be taken seriously?

Napolitano says: "Instead of allowing it to die, helping it to die, or even purchasing the slaves and then freeing them, which would have cost a lot less money than the Civil War cost, Lincoln set out on the most murderous war in American history."

That's what he said. In this very video, which is what we're all commenting on.

You're attacking the comedians for making jokes about this and accusing them for doing what Napolitano just did!

He's the one claiming that Lincoln attacked the south to free the slaves!

So, again I ask, what are you even talking about?

This video, the daily show response, all of this argument, was supposed to be about Napolitano being totally wrong. I originally commented here because you were parroting his claims that Lincoln had a lot of options, but chose "murderous war" instead of buying every slave or whatever other imagined option you think he had.

So either you understand why the Civil War started, and we agree, as you sometimes seem to indicate, or you're in agreement with Napolitano and his view that Lincoln started the Civil War as one of his apparently many options for ending slavery.

So which is it?

Do you understand why you make no sense?

Titanfall Gameplay video @ 1440p

RFlagg says...

It was one of the best games I've ever played. Certainly the best shooter. That PC beta period didn't last nearly long enough and can't wait to play it again. I had an i3 530 and nVidia 450 GTS at the time and still got fairly good graphics on my 1600x900 monitor... By March 11th I should have a new i7 4770k and an nVidia GTX 770 and a 1080p monitor so win there... Quad Titans on the system shown though is insane... And can the XBox One even do the game on 1080p or was it locked to 720p like most other titles? Which is the crazy part... I mean, I might get an XBox One Titanfall edition since you get the game and a headset for no additional cost, and Destiny sadly isn't coming to PC for some odd reason.
