prometheus-deleted scene-the engineer speaks
Subtlety. The first two had so much depth and subtlety to the character development. Unscripted dialog. Impromptu chatter borne of the actor's own interpretation of what they feel in the moment as that character. Indiscernable background conversations among all cast members - including major characters, minor characters, and even extras - that make you believe they are part of a real, vast world you know almost nothing about. This eleiminates disbelief and allows the viewer to invest emotionslly into the characters and thus the action they are a part of. Works 1000 times better than CGI.
Russell Brand debates Nigel Farage on immigration
"The rich keep you fed enough that you bark at the intruders." - Some youtuber.
Yes he's a little out of his depth and he's so desperate to try and get people to understand that he's hurrying and nervous. Well, he's a comedian, he isn't used to public speaking, he knows how to make people laugh not convince them in an argument. But he's out there, putting his neck on the line when he doesn't even NEED to - because as the tabloids (controlled by who?) enjoy pointing out he's rich. At least he got rich through his ability to make people laugh, rather than tricking people into voting for him because he'd act in their best interests then selling their decisions to the highest bidder.
We are seeing politicians scrambling for ANYTHING they can to hold power and keep making money for a little longer. That anything is immigration and they're quite happy to let people convince themselves its the immigrants. Even if we are slightly overcrowded for our infrastructure in Britain, we wouldn't be if the money in the system was active and being used to build and be productive instead of sitting in the pockets of people who have everything they want and 8 figure bank balances. These people in charge keep telling us they're going to tackle all these problems, but they never do anything to close the loopholes being used by all the huge corporations who have been paying NO TAX WHATSOEVER during the times of extreme wealth and growth. Is it any wonder our countries are in a dire condition? Our tax system has been starved of hundreds of billions, possibly trillions, who really knows!? And why weren't they closed? Just look at the links between big business and and politics, the only reason we aren't all saying "what the fuck is going on?" is because they can distract people through their control over the media and their convincing oratory skill into going "it's your neighbour.. it's his fault. was he born here? why is he using your hospital?", meanwhile we lose out of BILLIONS because the post office was sold off on the sly! Only to be told next election THAT WE ARE SHORT ON OUR FUCKING BUDGET. You're ok with that happening?! Why is it ok for them to keep coming back having lost our money and asking for more, but if it was a man who came directly to our door to collect our money in exchange for services, we'd tell him to piss off? It's EASIER to blame someone who looks and speaks differently rather than the clever bastard with a gleam in his eye sitting in the pub silver tonguing his constituents.
We are not fucking short on productivity - how many people do you know that think they have a lot of spare time and freedom from work? But that productivity is not being directed appropriately, and if you don't believe that then you need to get outside and talk to people who are less fortunate than you... benefit of the doubt, maybe you just haven't had to see it. But all the money that went on bonuses could be going into improving schools, police, hospitals, public transport and roads and god knows what else. A bunch of people would go without a brand new range rover sport or yacht or champagne holiday for 30... in contrast, thousands less people would die - think of the old people dying in the cold each winter? or hospital beds and treatments for those with cancer or anything that the NHS can't afford to treat? All the freshly educated nurses and doctors thanks to our universities being given cash to improve their facilities and training.
The theory behind all this was trickle-down-wealth, the money will be distributed through society by paying those at the top a lot of money. It CLEARLY does not work, and anyone who suggests otherwise would surely be considered insane. It's not working, we see it not working, so why aren't we fixing it or getting angry and making those in charge fix it?
If Brand is advocating anarchy (and i'd like to know your argument for saying that, i could stand to be convinced), it's because he's exasperated at our inaction and wants to try and stir people to act. We're currently at the other extreme - watching it happen. People are criticising the crowd for being too into brand, too "leftist" or some nonsense. But those are the people that are having their lives drained by these leeches at the top, of course they're only going to come and cheer if someone is going to say what needs to be said. Any other night, it's just drones debating different ways to stack the odds against everyone.
Edited: Tried to make it nicer, more readable, sorry for the long post but he's really really got a great point and i can't understand why we are all ignoring what's going on. We seem to accept that big business WILL get away with not paying billions in tax like that's fine.. but it's not, we can change it, we just have to stop fucking ignoring it and hold these twats to account like Brand is trying to do. It's not like he's suggesting some wild and risky change, he's just saying STOP LETTING AND HELPING PEOPLE STEAL MONEY FROM US. They won't, and watch Farage go bright red when brand talks about his scandals and rich business partners. If they won't, we need to get rid of them. You may not like his demeanour but he is expressing democratic and egalitarian points.
"Russell Brand destroys Nigel Farage on immigration"???
I can only assume you are joking. Brand was WAY out of his depth. In fact, much as I dislike the pseudo revolutionary, vainglorious half wit, I actually felt sorry for him. He was put firmly in his place by one astute person; "If you think you can, why don't you stand (for election)?" His response; " Mate, I'm frightened I'd become one of them." So, he doesn't even have confidence in his own childish rhetoric. He calls for anarchy just as long as he is not at the helm. He should put up, or shut up. Oh, and his call for people not to vote is one of the stupidest, most irresponsible things I have heard in a while.

Batman vs. Darth Vader
I might expand this point to Vader's character (original trilogy.) Wouldn't Vader recognize a cunning opponent and attempt to persuade him to cross over? Bruce Wayne already started using the force a little, hasn't he? (Light Sabre?) A line or two about how Batman already treads near the Dark Side already, and how he could make a powerful ally to the empire ("Join me," or "don't make me destroy you,") could have added some depth to the story of an otherwise wonderfully produced short. (Plus, they captured Superman??? What is Batman doing in Space? How did they capture Superman? What else is going on?)
Anyways, if the goal of this video was to leave the audience wanting more, it's succeeded in me. I want answers.
Cool video. But, as a Batman fan I downvote this on principle alone...
Doubt - How Deniers Win
@newtboy
I think the people of Kiribati would disagree that it's not time to panic!
If you'd read my post I didn't claim the people of Kiribati weren't in a position to panic. I actually went further in agreeing with you, to the point that they should have been panicked a hundred years ago in 1914 already. The distinction being that what ever the climate does wasn't going to save them. 200 hundred years of cooling and sea level decline from 1914 would still have them on an island a few feet on average above sea level and still a disaster waiting to happen.
California alone, which produces over 1/4 of America's food,
Here we do have a difference of fact. I don't know what measure you've imagined up, but the cattle in texas alone are more than double the food produced in California. The corn and other crops in any number of prairie states to the same. You can't just invent numbers. Yields across crops have been increasing steadily year on year in North America for decades.
The violence is often CAUSED by the lack of food, making the 'men with guns' have a reason to steal and control food sources. If food were plentiful, it would be impossible for them to do so.
I'm sorry, read more history, you are just wrong on this. 10 guys with guns against 10 farmers with food and the farmers lose every time. The guys with guns eat for the year. The farmers maybe even are able to beg or slave for scraps that year. The next year maybe only 5 farmers bother to grow anything, and next harvest there are 15 guys with guns. Look at the Russian revolution and that's exactly the road that led to Stalin's mass starvations and lack of food. It's actually why I am a Canadian as my grandfather's family left their farm in Russia with the clothes on his back after the his neighbours farm was razed to the ground enough times.
The thugs SELL that food, so it doesn't just disappear
Food doesn't create itself as noted above. The cycle is less and less food as the thugs destroy all incentive to bother trying to grow something.
adopting new tech, even quick adoption, absolutely CAN be an economic boon
I agree. I hadn't realized that adoption of new tech was that simple. I was under the impression one also had to take the time to, you know, invent it. The existing technology for replacing oil and coal cost effectively doesn't exist yet. Electric cars and nuclear power are the closest thing. The market will adopt electric cars without us doing a thing. Switching from coal to nuclear though, even if universally agreed and adopted yesterday, would still take decades for a conversion. Those decades are enough that even if we got to zero emissions by then(~2050), the sea level and temperature at 2100 aren't going to look much if any different(by IPCC best estimates).
So I repeat, if you want meaningful emission reductions, you have no other option but restricting consumption across the globe. That hasn't been accomplished in the past without setting of wars, so I keep my vote as cure is worse than disease.
The 78% glacial mass loss was worst case if CO2 emissions are still accelerating in 2100. The mountains with the glaciers will still be bulking each winter and running off each summer, just to a 78% smaller size in the depth of summer. As in, absolutely not 78% less run off. And they are not 'my' numbers as you wish to refer, but the IPCC's numbers. Your effort to somehow leave question to their veracity is the very campaign of 'doubt' in the science the video is talking about.
Black Sea Devil Anglerfish Filmed for the First Time Ever
Slightly misleading title according to the narrative (00:17). "Alive and at depth", yes, but not the first time filmed ever.
Overwatch Gameplay Trailer
I don't knock Bliz for trying to give their characters some character, I knock them for doing it badly.
(emphasis mine). So I was literally describing my very first impression, and I stand by that comment. As for gameplay, the information I've heard so far is that the gameplay modes will include payload and control point maps.... hardly ground breaking.
but you're right, I was unfairly dismissive and I hereby amend my comment:
it's TF2 and DOTA/LOL without the humour and style.
Besides, I think you're reading too much into what I said.
First, it was an obviously flippant comment, not an in-depth analysis of the game.
Second, if you read the whole comment it was
I will say that after more consideration, the concept of a team based FPS with moba-style heroes could be interesting. I suspect it won't be for me though, for the same reasons I don't play DOTA or LOL; I simply don't have the time to learn all the characters and their counters.
... I still won't knock Bliz for trying to give their characters...some character. The multicultural lineup of caricatures was a well established trope long before TF2.
All that aside, your comment wasn't simply that it lacked TF2's style and humour, you also dismissed any differences in gameplay. I am commenting on a gameplay video. My rant was more directed at this assumption that the game is the same as TF2, sans perhaps decent writing. I thought this trailer demonstrated some nifty looking mechanics that TF2 certainly doesn't have which were apparently overlooked in favour of pointing out that both games had turrets. or that it was "TF2 without style or humour".
Cenk Uygur debates Sam Harris
I can't believe Cenk couldn't understand Harris's point that there's a difference between a disagreement and factually misrepresenting another's viewpoint.
Cenk also then fails to understand the nuance in religious beliefs and how those differences matter. I mean, this seems really obvious. Yes it matters how many layers of improbability people layer on their belief system since it's their belief system we're concerned with.
That's why Harris treats Islamic doctrine differently, because it's so obviously different then the other major belief systems and deserves the extra attention.
Then Cenk goes on to say lay the blame of WW2 on Christianity? Yea Germany and Japan attacked their neighbors due to their Christian beliefs. Seriously? He smugly says: "oh when Muslims do something it's because of Islam but when Christians do it, it's complicated."
Cenk is so out of his depth throughout this interview that it's embarrassing.
I can't believe someone wrote that Cenk won this "debate". Get your head checked, this isn't even a debate, this is Harris trying to get Cenk to understand basic concepts.
The Twelfth Doctor Doesn't Like Danny (Doctor Who)
It's a shame that couldn't have been the character. I don't think I like Peter Capaldi as the Doctor all that much... not necessarily the choice of the man himself, but the character is too much like Peter Davison's Doctor, which is my least favorite of the Doctors (excluding those whose existence I discount entirely). Maybe he'll grown on me more, but Capaldi has the wrong mixture of goofy and serious in his character.
A *really* aggressively, over the top curmudgeon but with a bit of depth would have been more interesting and funny.
ayn rand and her stories of rapey heroes
Man, Nabokov's prose could punch the balls off of anything Dickens ever wrote. You're seriously gonna hold up the language of Dickens as a shining example? The guy who wrote such memorable purplitudes as:
"And in this particular period, the skiey influences seem to tincture the animal life with their own mysterious and wayward spirit of change. The birds desert their summer haunts; an unaccountable inquietude pervades the brute creation; even men in this unsettled season have considered themselves, more (than at others) stirred by the motion and whisperings of their genius. And every creature that flows upon the tide of the Universal Life of Things, feels upon the ruffled surface, the mighty and solemn change, which is at work within its depths."
Rand was certainly not a great writer (as is often the case with those who write novels in a language that isn't native to them). As such, there's no comparison between Rand's use of English and say, Dickens' (but you could probably say that about Dickens and almost anyone else,...)
bronx man beaten and arrested on video for no charge
How is it not surprising that the problem sees no problem?
You say : "I don't see people getting beat up, or shot, or assaulted, or arrested for no reason"
So, those that were "beat up, or shot, or assaulted, or arrested", were for a good reason, right?
Ever consider that those reasons are often made up?
Ever consider that the stories you heard around the water cooler were simply B.S., and it was in fact the police simply preying on innocent people?
Just what exactly does LE do for me, or anyone?
Do police have super powers and spidey senses?
Will they magically teleport to someone getting raped, and prevent it?
Will they magically teleport to someone getting run over, and prevent it?
Will they magically teleport to someone getting beaten, and prevent it?
Will they magically teleport to someone getting robbed, and prevent it?
The answer is : no.
Police can't actually /help/ anyone.
They can only show up after the fact, and ask you what happened, and if you know who did it.
If you don't know who it was, tough shit. Sucks to be you.
Unlike on TV, there is no in-depth investigation. The most they do is tell you to call them if you remember something else. (This is speaking from experience)
What if you're not around to even tell them anything? Almost every murder committed by an unrelated stranger without witnesses or video goes unsolved.
Why? Because all police know how to do is ask friends/family where they were, and if everyone has an excuse, police got nothing.
At least when a normal person [that you can identify] harms you, you /can/ call the police, and maybe, just maybe, if they feel like it, they will round them up after the fact.
(They often don't. We've had people dumping trash on our land : police didn't respond. We've had people hunting [strangers shooting guns] on our property : police didn't respond. Brought evidence of a fraud to the police station, with account numbers, names, addresses : we won't investigate. The only time they ever came was to talk with my mother after she reported her credit card number was being used by a stranger - LOL, of all the things, they bother coming for /that/?)
But if the police harm you, you've got nowhere to turn to - but them. And they care more about each other, than some stranger.
Heck, I've been tailgated by a cop, on a multi-lane road, so close his headlights weren't even visible over my trunk. He could have gone around me any time. After miles, when I finally sped up - BAM. Ticket.
I've pulled up to a roadblock by my house, and asked if I could go by. The guy was so incensed that he detained me for hours, and told me I was threatening his life, reckless driving, and not wearing a seatbelt.
I've been threatened by a cop - because I interrupted her chat with her girlfriend to ask for directions around a road they were closing off.
I've been pulled over with gun drawn, for trivial speeding (well below reckless).
Seriously people, every time you get pulled over, you are at risk of getting shot, because someone is trained to be suspicious and paranoid, and they saw something shiny.
Just look at how they behave. Cop shoots his daughter in his own garage, because he thought she was a burglar.
What, too much to ask just to look at the person to see if they're even a burglar? Shoot first ask questions later.
Every year there are multiple cases of police raiding a house and shooting people - only to find out it was the wrong house. What, too much trouble to be a decent human being and just knock first, and ask for whoever they need to come out?
Oh, but that might put them at a greater risk. And we all know that police take MINIMAL risks themselves, and instead risk the lives of the citizens. (Why not approach with gun drawn? At least you're ready to shoot the suspect. And if you accidentally shoot the suspect, oh well, just say they 'attacked'. No biggie. Why take the risk.)
The biggest risk they take, is the one they dream up for when they want to take credit for being the heroes they never were.
Look at the friggin VT shooting. Swarms of cops surrounding a building. Man inside, could be killing more people by the moment... and the cops just camp out and wait for him to kill himself.
Worst part, is if it were my family inside, and I tried to go in and stop the shooter, the police would just shoot me for trying to enter.
(And no, police don't deserve heroic praise. They deserve the _pay_check_ they signed up for. If that's not enough, they should take life more seriously and really think about what it is they're getting into, before they do it. Take responsibility, like an adult should.)
The police are a liability. They're armed. They're selfish. They're paranoid and suspicious. They're jumpy.
IMO, the best thing to do is keep away from them, don't look at them, don't talk to them. Stay away, and stay safe.
Oh yeah, and the police are also immune form the constitution's equal protection clause. "Because interpretation".
Look at the numbers. You are less likely to be arrested or go to jail in NORTH KOREA, than here in the U.S. of A. By a factor of 4 last I checked.
What the heck is going on here?
1 in 18 men is either in jail, on parole, or somewhere in the process of going to jail.
Most of the countries in Europe have smaller populations, than the people that we have 'in the system'. And most of the people we have 'in the system', never even harmed another person. They're just arrested for 'behavior crimes' - simply doing things that are not allowed. This is madness. The system is mad, the police are mad.
You don't end up with videos of a gang of police acting like gangsters, if it's a matter of 'a few bad apples'. They all have to be in the same frame of mind.
If they weren't all of the same frame of mind, one would do something bad, and the others would say "whoa there man, you're out of line".
But instead, they all do it. Because there are no 'bad apples'.
There is 'bad training', and 'bad culture', and it permeates the profession.
And when I say bad, I don't mean that "they are trained to be thugs".
I mean that the police don't see suspects as 'citizens (members of the state) that the police are on the side of'.
Whoever crosses their path is dehumanized. Some kind of "other", that the police need to protect society from. Not realizing that those people /are/ society, and /they/ need protection.
The kind of behavior that I see in these kinds of videos, it's simply treason. Betrayal of the state.
If the laws of this country were written to provide restitution to victims - and there were no laws to simply tell people how to live, and if the police spent their time providing restitution to victims, then I would have nothing but the greatest appreciation for the police.
As it stands, there's very little nobility around this profession. Majority of the job is simply picking on people - sometimes because they did harm, but usually because they mind their own business in an unapproved of way, or for kicks.

Kiesza - Hideaway
There's gotta be a couple of nice edits in there but that was a really well done music video. The best part about doing it on a street is the depth you can get. You can see all the way down the block in the long shot and it's really friggin cool. People walking in the background that hopefully weren't a part of the video, I loved it, it was done soo well that I don't know whether they shot it 3 times on an open set, or 40 times on a completely controlled closed set.
Oh and the fact that you can see the Empire State Building WAY WAY back there, can anyone tell specifically what neighborhood this was shot in? Any New Yorkers cause otherwise I'm going to google maps and obsessing for a few hours.
UGH I'm done, it shows the street signs in the beginning, should've looked for that first.

Reggae Shark - Key of Awesome
Just tap into the undersea fibre, there are repeaters every few miles.
Seriously though, I never thought about it. My guess would be not very well, and after a quick search I found this video - http://youtu.be/49K2hjV9OOY ("How to make your GoPro WiFi working underwater"), so there wouldn't be a need for such an "antenna extender" if WiFi did work well enough under water.
Any submarine experts on the sift??
I suspect that very low frequencies could work, but there is probably a max depth below which they couldn't communicate well.
Can we get internet connection underwater (wifi). I need to know that
