What if the government was your worst enemy

Yogi says...

>> ^bobknight33:

Whats a Country to do when it is out of money? Cut services and keep law an order.
This is what is happening. Lots of pissed off , unemployed people receiving less government benefits, along with higher prices for goods and services due to the government deflating the currency to ease the country's debt.

In America many states and local government are on the edge of bankruptcy. These states and cities will have to do the same as Spain and Greece. Much bloodshed is yet to come.
The Federal government is printing money and borrowing like there is no tomorrow. Tomorrow will surly come and the pied piper will be paid, but only after we collapse.
With little moral fiber left in our leadership, it is easier to spend our self into a depression then face the awful truth and sell the hard sell to the people.

Or it could become a democracy and actually take the peoples votes into account rather than doing whatever it pleases and being ruled by the rich. America is not a poor country it's outstandingly rich, yet the public doesn't get that money...it's not ours but it's our rulers. Our Education and Healthcare could be free, but that doesn't help the rich, so it's not.

Starter Fluid Tire Inflation [MythBusters]

Jinx says...

>> ^rottenseed:

So the limiting reactant would be the starter fluid and the air in the tire. Oxygen to be more exact. Because you want enough forces to seat the tire, but not so much it removes all of the gases from the tire, maybe they should have tried less starter fluid. If that's depleted in the reaction quickly leaving enough energy to seat the tire, but also enough oxygen left over from the reaction, you might end up with a working tire.
Somebody please double check my thought process, but I think it's definitely worth more experimentation.

Would be one to test, but I think you'd end up with the same problem. End of the day to jump the tyre back on the rim you are going to be filling quite a lot of the inside of that tyre with the hot gases from the combustion. You might get less deflation with less accelarant, but I'd think you'd start with a lower pressure within the tyre even before the gases cool, so you wouldn't gain much. Thats my guess anyway.

Now maybe if you did this, and at the same time dropped just the right amount of dry ice in with it you could get the tyre back on the rim AND get it pressurised without the need for some sort of pump. Ofc, dry ice is not exactly something you tend to have stored in the glove compartment...

Starter Fluid Tire Inflation [MythBusters]

Payback says...

This episode always bugged me. They got the concept wrong. The idea has always been to re-seat a tire's bead seal THEN pump it up. You can fill it afterwards with a bicycle hand pump if neccessary. 4 wheelers break the bead seal all the time when they deflate to get better traction and they don't use wheels with bead locks.

Maybe if the myth was you can drive away after the explosion, that'd be acceptable.

"Facebook Parenting" Dad Responds To Dr. Phil

enoch says...

dr phil is an entertainer with his stock metaphors and his patented country schtick.while quaint and cute it really has no substance.

did the father over-react?..possibly.
was it poor judgment to post to youtube? ..i think there is a case for that.
do i have any right to judge this mans parenting?..nope.not one bit.

real easy to sit on the sidelines with pretty much zero knowledge or understanding of this mans complex relationship with his daughter and pass judgment.

i know that i didnt take too kindly to people thinking they had a right to express their disagreement pertaining to my parenting skills.
i made mistakes.
sometimes the punishment was too harsh..and othertimes too soft.
many time i reacted out of frustration rather than an even handed desire to teach a lesson.
i grew as a parent right along with my boys,as i suspect most parents do.

i recall a time in the grocery store when my oldest was being a total little asshole.(dont even start..we all can be at times.this was his time).
i threatened to pull his pants down and whoop his ass if he didnt knock it off and this woman close to us decided she had the right to voice her opinion "you wouldnt dare" she exclaimed.
the look of triumph on my oldest sons face was priceless.
this woman had given my son the impetus to look up at me with a smug self-satisfied look and i knew KNEW i was going to lose control of the situation if i didnt react fast.
so i just looked at this woman, this total stranger and replied "if you dont mind your own fucking business lady, after i am done with him, you're next".
with the look of shock and bewilderment she tight-lipped scurried away and that smug look on my son slowly deflated and he settles his little ass down.

now all this may seem shocking or even repulsive to those with a more tender sensibility but what this woman did not know, could NOT have known, was that my oldest son was easily embarrassed by nudity, especially his own.so i knew that i would not have to pull his pants down and "whoop his ass in front of everybody" because the mere thought of his naked ass hanging out in public was all i needed.

which brings me to the point that this is between this father and his daughter and while he may have misjudged by posting to youtube it is evident he cares about his role as a father and HE knows the particulars of their relationship and is best suited to deal with them.

dr phil can just go fuck himself.

Basketball player passes to himself and DUNKS IT

kceaton1 says...

@dannym3141 I agree with everything you said. I want to see FAR more plays like that. Plays like that are what make sports fun to watch in the first place. But, the reason you don't see those moves very often are for the exact reasons I stated. Unless you are a Michael Jordan and get the "go ahead" to play like this or moreover you have such talent (as in Jordan's case) that these type of plays will happen just due to the nature of his play-style. Like you said it depends on the player and their talent and I completely agree with you.

At the same time coaches will try to reign in three point shooting, alley-oops, high risk plays, etc... But, they tend to allow the plays to be "on the floor" when certain players enter the game and thus shift the dynamics. Thus, like you said, it's the players--ultimately it truly does come down to the player on the court and "the moment" (which if you've played Basketball, or really any sport you know what I mean by that--the moment when things happen to line up, perfectly, and naturally you react with a play you already know OR something that "feels" natural).

If the player can pull off the move performed in the video just as well as a regular dunk or layup, have at it, as it creates great momentum and ignites (or deflates) the crowd which are intangibles that are VERY important in a game and don't appear on a scoring sheet, but I'll be the first to tell you it (they) should be a statistic measuring something as they can win games.

FDR: I Welcome Their Hatred

quantumushroom says...

Oh yeah, Hoover, acting like a liberal, paved the way for FDR. You might agree that without Hoover's antics clearing a path, there would've been no New Deal.

FDR is a sacred cow of the left. You here would have a better chance of convincing shinyblurry there is no God than me convincing you FDR was clueless, and overrode the the original power-limiting intent and meaning of the Constitution.

"High tariffs and government-sponsored deflation followed by enormous taxation and unthinkable government expenditures turned a stock market stumble into a decade-long nightmare."

Jesus. Neither of those could be attributed to FDR. The tariffs were under Hoover and massive government spending under the new deal is anything but deflationary.
I mean, go ahead and say the New Deal did not work and all that vague nonsense. You would be wrong but at least it would look like a sensible statement.

FDR: I Welcome Their Hatred

quantumushroom says...

"We have tried spending money. We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work. And I have just one interest, and if I am wrong … somebody else can have my job. I want to see this country prosperous. I want to see people get a job. I want to see people get enough to eat. We have never made good on our promises. … I say after eight years of this Administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started. … And an enormous debt to boot." --Henry Morgenthau, Jr., U.S. Secretary of the Treasury during the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt

The myth of FDR is the edifice on which the modern welfare state wobbles.

So what did FDR do, exactly? If big biz (that old reliable satan of the left) really "controlled" government then all FDR did was make government bigger and more tyrannical, and to this day the left claims big biz still runs it.
FDR's antics extended the Depression. "High tariffs and government-sponsored deflation followed by enormous taxation and unthinkable government expenditures turned a stock market stumble into a decade-long nightmare."
Obama's cut from the same fictive cloth, a dragon pretending to be dragonslayer.

These statements are from a reputable historian or economist I take it?
