First, Open the Books is not a trustworthy or unbiased source of information. Most of those vehicles and weapons we did leave/are leaving, like the cash, were in the hands of the Afghanis when Trump sounded retreat last spring. Recently Biden's administration changed this, creating programs and staffing to accommodate the refugees and convincing our allies to accept many in Europe, something Trump didn't even try.

Agreed: if she'd been hired by the school to pen test, there would be no question. In this case, my argument is just that I don't see anything to suggest that she's anything other than a concerned parent. I think it's perfectly legitimate to worry about your children's security in a US school.

I don't know what steps parents have taken to try to improve security at the school - and don't know how much it matters: sure, she's in a stronger position if the school repeatedly rebuffed requests for spending their tight budget on security consultants.

I was a consultant for a company that banned the use of box cutters for all their employees after 2 incidents. I can't even imagine a work place incident involving one of these things.

How so? I've always found C# docs to be quite a bit better than the equivalent Sun/Oracle's Java docs. Language features like auto-property/fields, Lamda expressions, LINQ, etc have been sorely missed in Java (at least by me) until recently. Admittedly, the C# frameworks are a bit lacking compared to the Java ecosystem though. I will admit that I've had to get back into Java recently for my job and after starting to use IntelliJ, it's actually made Java mor enjoyable.

My programming started with BASIC on an IBM XT back in the 80s and various programming books, mainly just copying the programs as written then trying to modify them. This book in particular was pivotal for me as I loved the old Infocom text adventures of the time:

In high-school I learned C and LISP for Autocad programming. I continued to learn about C (plus a little C++) and ASM thanks to John Carmack and DOOM/Quake. Wrote my own computer games (mainly RTS as the Command and Conquer series was big back then) ... nothing great but I thought they were cool.

Dabbled in Java a bit in college but ultimately shifted to C++ and C# after getting a consultancy job and that is what I continued with until recently. Now I'm back into Java and currently trying to catch up on all the front-end Javascript libraries now as well as tinkering with Perl, GO, and Objective-C.

(Most of) That doesn't work, actually, all you'll get is people pandering to large corporations so they get good paying "consulting" contracts after they leave office.

He probably blacklisted the MAC address, which basically means that dude's device will never again be able to connect to that router. (Two assumptions there: 1. The business will never change settings or factory reset the router, very likely considering they didn't even change the default login. 2. The guy doesn't know enough to spoof his MAC address, also likely by sheer probability.)

I don't disagree that it is deserved, but on the other hand, he's inflicting a fairly permanent punishment on the dude on the behalf of the business, without consulting them about it. If he's a regular that was just having a bad day, he might pester them about why his wireless isn't working any more and they won't know the answer. Or he might decide to stop going there.

If that's how the cafe wanted to deal with him, I'd be all in favor. But it should be their decision. So I hope the guy informs them about what he did and offers to A) train an employee to do the same (plus changing the router password) and/or B) undo what he did IF they want him to.
