Hurricane Laura Destroys Controversial Confederate Statue

newtboy says...

What in the Fuck is a "police jury" and why would they have any input on the decision at all?

BLM, take note. May the next storm topple any confederate monuments to treason in your area, even if the winds are only 20mph. If the power is out, there's no video proving the wind didn't take them down, right? (Hint hint)

I have read that Lee quote too. I think he meant any statues or monuments to the confederacy, but that's just my opinion.

I certainly see a distinction between imperfect but honorable men trying to do right and treasonous racists trying to found a nation rooted in the racist concept that ...."the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery—subordination to the superior race—is his natural and normal condition. "

I, for one, don't demand perfection from my heros, only honor, honesty, and empathy. Claiming other people are subhuman and naturally subordinate fails on all three counts.

I think it's important to evaluate the reasons many monuments were erected, in the case of confederate monuments it was done to oppose civil rights for non whites, install a permanent reminder of the pervasive racism the confederate was founded on, and to misrepresent history to minimize their ancestors treason.
In the case of the Lincoln emancipation monument, it was to celebrate finally officially recognizing the humanity of a large portion of the population. I would hope anyone bothered by it's depictions 1)understands the history of its creation (thanks for that) and 2)offers to replace it at their expense rather than demand its removal at taxpayer expense.

have read a number of Lee descendants were okay w/removing his statues, too. by now, i'd hope, most folks know R.E.L. said statues weren't gonna be helpful.

“I think it wiser, not to keep open the sores of war but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavored to obliterate the marks of civil strife, to commit to oblivion the feelings engendered.”

of course, he was talking about a gettysburg memorial, so maybe he was reluctant to have a memorial at the site of his gravest error.

but the issue is like most things: complicated. like the lincoln emancipation memorial. get how the couchant slave is a downer, but the fact former slaves paid for its erection, the model for the slave was t.s. eliott grandpa's gardener, a former escaped slave, and is mohammed ali's direct ancestor - is kinda cool. maybe worth having around just to explain all the details around its history.

You realize that confederate statues are not OUR history in any shape or form right?

They literally belong to the history of a DIFFERENT country called The Confederate States of America that has nothing to do with us.

oh! i guess y'all do know your history! must have some statues still around?

Joe Biden's Crime Bill In his own words.

newtboy says...

Who wants proven innocent blacks executed anyway because, based solely on their skin color, he believes "they mugged someone"? Mr Don Trump- Trumpublican

Who wants to shove more "thugs" (his word for blacks) in prison for longer sentences? Mr Don Trump-Trumpublican

Who complained loudly that the Biden crime bill didn't lock up enough blacks for long enough? Mr Don Trump-Trumpublican

Who wants to execute way more "thugs" (blacks), but wants something less "comfortable" than lethal injection (like slow public hangings)? Mr Don Trump-Trumpublican

Who thinks white supremacists, treasonous confederates, and neo Nazis are "good people" who shouldn't serve time for rioting and attacking peaceful anti-racism protesters? Mr Don Trump-Trumpublican

Who still holds these beliefs and has never once apologized for them? Mr Don Trump-Trumpublican

You are so dishonest and desperate.

People who argue what the Civil War was about

newtboy says...

If people dishonestly try to claim the secession of the traitorous confederacy wasn't based on slavery, remind them of what it's founders and leaders said about it at the time.

"Our new government foundations are laid, it's cornerstones rest, on the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery - subordination to the superior race- is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based on this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth."

The Black Community Destroys Trumps Racism In One Video

newtboy says...

Lol. A few Uncle Ruckus clones with their confederate flags aren't the black community, @bobknight33. The creator admits his opinions are extremely unpopular with non whites and non far right wingers....but he makes money off selling them to white far rights.

Trump hates most of America and most Americans, just as most despise him. Why doesn't HE just leave?
He can go home to Putin with his illegal immigrant wife (she violated her no work visa by doing soft core pornography for money) and her anchor baby. It's his best bet to avoid prison....flee to a country that won't extradite.

So much fail.

Very Fine People On Both Sides, Lee Was The Best General

newtboy says...

Since they set up a process to repatriate Confederates, I would guess either the law has changed or they were assumed to have renounced citizenship when they swore allegiance to the Confederacy...but I'm no historical law professor.

Yes, there are some non combatants who joined Daesh who claim to have not renounced or forfeited their citizenship, but since they gave aid and comfort to the enemy during "war" and could be executed imo, wanting to return home and be subjected to the legal system doesn't sound a bit smart. I think those who took up arms are in a different boat, with a much harsher likely legal outcome.

If the US never recognized the confederate states, then wouldn't they say all the people in the south are still US citizens? Lee was a general, and an American, just not a general for the USA.

You are hilarious. Always hoping others are as ignorant as you about history.

The KKK, Neo Nazis, and wishful AntiAmerican Confederates are all Republicans today (edit:and have been for your entire lifetime.). Not a Democrat among them.
I recall a time when Republicans stood up for American values, at least publicly, but that time has long past.

KKK was a Democrat invention and Nazi were fascist just like the Democrat sided antifascists.

newtboy says...

Sure, @bobknight33, but when right wingers bring their children to violent Confederate, KKK, and Nazi rallies, those are good people teaching their children about the real world, and it's perfectly reasonable for them to teach their children to violently hate who they do.

I suppose you would like to have some government regulations imposed on parenting so everyone is required to do it as you see fit, right?

He is...the truck was dead in under 2 years, so my parents bought him a Supra.
The scary part was the tracks he would jump were at a freeway overpass (sunken freeway), and he tried to not touch the overpass with his tires. Better, the street he did this on was Hazzard st. in Houston (jumping the 610 freeway)
(No, he didn't have a confederate flag painted on the roof)

These kids are being subjected to an organized campaign of terror. Ignorance of this, willfully or otherwise, only demonstrates a lack of appreciation for the fact that black and brown people fear for their lives when racist symbols like the confederate flag and use of the N-word are deliberately targeted at them.

New Rule: The 'What Were You Thinking' Generation

MilkmanDan says...

I'm completely with Maher on this one.

...But, perhaps to his dismay, this kinda also explains (notice the use of "explains" as opposed to "justifies") unacceptable further-back behavior, like having some degree of appreciation for Confederate soldiers and officers in the Civil War, slave ownership by founding fathers like Thomas Jefferson, etc. It is possible to respect positive contributions of people in the past without being required to turn a blind eye to their faults, even if those faults would be utterly disqualifying today.
