Mark Ronson: How sampling transformed music

artician says...

The remix scene is just an update of conductors and arrangers of classical. They take other peoples work and assemble a band of instruments, sometimes rewriting the music to fit a theme, or what they have on hand, and then present it to others. I don't think we're in a "post-sampling" era, I think most people just didn't realize how things transformed.

Selfie in Front of Passing Train Goes Wrong

Who talks a selfie with video like that anyway? Maybe the conductor wasn't doing us a favor after all . . . (I also don't see the alleged piece of metal either though.)

The conductor was actually protecting this dimwit - right behind the conductors leg is a protruding metal piece, which is what would have been ramming into Selfie's head had the leg + boot not been there.

Laying Down on Railroad Tracks - Poland Style

really though, can't upvote this. can't give these guys what they want. if you were the conductor and that guy did die, how well do you think you would deal with that, even knowing that there was nothing you could do? it's sickening to impose such a risk on someone else's psyche.

Japanese trains are scheduled to within 0.19 seconds

> The conductor was off by 190 miliseconds

OK I could go for a train 19 microseconds late, but there is no way I am waiting around for 190,000 microseconds to pass

NEAR FATAL HEAD ON CRASH

Plonq says...

I'd say that there are at least three engineers and a conductor on the market for new underwear. If you have ever been on the rails when a train is bearing down on you, they look MUCH bigger than they do in passing.

It's possible that they screwed up the track occupancy clearance at the RTC level, but my guess is that one of those two ran a stop signal, and based on the fact that they are frantically backing up at the time, I suspect it's the CP freight. That's pretty much an automatic cardinal rules violation; there's a crew who will be looking for new jobs once the dust settles.

NEAR FATAL HEAD ON CRASH

Head-on not applicable here, eh? The direction the engines' facing doesn't factor when one's in reverse and one's powered forward or at rest-One train braked in the nick and almost slammed another train with an engine facing the camera almost at a dead-stop. Looks like the fated train was moving forward in an attempt to power-up and avoid the impact should that other not have stopped. I would have bailed-out too, smart engineer or conductor.

Blue Devils Brass Band - Space Chords = Mind Blown

I'm most amazed by the amount of control this conductor has over his band and their discipline to follow his direction so closely.

Very impressive.

Had to read up on it: http://www.skepdic.com/skeptimedia/skeptimedia105.html

A response to the article mentions this insight:
"He has some kind of odd skin deformation - his skin sample was clinically tested at VMA (Military Medical Center) in Belgrade and was found to have two skin layers less than a normal person. He also has no sweat glands (as you noted in your article) and also no hair, eyelashes, eyebrows, and so on.

His skin is very dry and its electrical resistance is extremely high, which enables him to hold wires under high voltage with practically no current flowing through his body. [Note: current = voltage/resistance. "Under dry conditions, the resistance offered by the human body may be as high as 100,000 Ohms."* ]

There are also some side effects of lacking sweat glands: when it is hot outside, he can not go for a walk without a wet t-shirt or some other cooling tool, otherwise his life would be threatened.

I also saw the video demonstration linked in your article, and I have to say that it is more sensational than truthful - the current is NOT coming "straight through his body" but through the electric wires straight from the electrical outlet, clearly visible on the video. His body is just a good insulator which mechanically holds conductors (forks) and nothing more than that. The reason for this misunderstanding is certainly the ignorance of Ohm's law and the relation between electrical current and voltage. Everybody can do the same thing if he has rubber gloves - or Biba's skin, which is the same.

There are also claims that he can direct electrical current through his body as he wishes, generate electrical current, switch on and off a nearby electrical appliance by his mind, and so on, but there is no evidence for those claims. "

How the American Empire is Colonizing the World (pt. 1)

alcom says...

A shocking exposé! Well, not really that shocking, unless you're a fan boy for the current US administration.

It just goes to show that the entire liberal/conservative (Republican/Democrat) debate is a joke. They're basically the same, but the self interest of the population creates these crack-pot, liberal fringe groups and insane right wing movements like the Tea Party. It's all just a distraction from the fact that corporations are running the show regardless of what party is in the president's office. The US and its allies are the conductors of an orchestra of world wide destabilization and they're robbing their own citizens to do it. Wake up and smell the oil!

Risk your life if you wish, but no consideration for a conductor who may have thought he was going to watch someone die makes you a fucktard.

Psycho Robots

skinnydaddy1 says...

First time I worked door at a bar. Broke up a few fights. I'm thinking "ok, I've got this. Its not to hard." When these 2 girls start yelling at each other. The older guy who had been doing it for several years was kicking back watching them. I walk up and ask If he's going to break it up and he just grins and say "Naa you go ahead." Should of known. The grin was the give away. Learned the hard way. The second I stepped in between them and asked them to break it up. Both turned and went after me. Of course i wrap one up to keep her from hitting me more and boom EVERY girl in the place went rabid on me. The other guy was laughing so hard he was almost on the floor. After everything was calmed down. I'm nursing a few hundred scratches and other wounds he Told me how to handle that situation. The next time It came up. He said watch and it was like watching a master conductor. He got them calmed and got both of them to leave. He was damn good. i never truly mastered it. I asked him how he did it. He said "you have to think like they do. Jack Nicholson gave the secret away in a move. You have to imagine a man. Then take away reason and accountability."
