The Most Popular Programming Languages - 1965/2020

Digitalfiend says...

How so? I've always found C# docs to be quite a bit better than the equivalent Sun/Oracle's Java docs. Language features like auto-property/fields, Lamda expressions, LINQ, etc have been sorely missed in Java (at least by me) until recently. Admittedly, the C# frameworks are a bit lacking compared to the Java ecosystem though. I will admit that I've had to get back into Java recently for my job and after starting to use IntelliJ, it's actually made Java mor enjoyable.

My programming started with BASIC on an IBM XT back in the 80s and various programming books, mainly just copying the programs as written then trying to modify them. This book in particular was pivotal for me as I loved the old Infocom text adventures of the time:

Write Your Own Adventure Programs For Your Microcomputer:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bxv0SsvibDMTYkFJbUswOHFQclE/view

(It looks like these books were released for free by Usborne: https://usborne.com/browse-books/features/computer-and-coding-books/ ... what a nostalgia trip!)

In high-school I learned C and LISP for Autocad programming. I continued to learn about C (plus a little C++) and ASM thanks to John Carmack and DOOM/Quake. Wrote my own computer games (mainly RTS as the Command and Conquer series was big back then) ... nothing great but I thought they were cool.

Dabbled in Java a bit in college but ultimately shifted to C++ and C# after getting a consultancy job and that is what I continued with until recently. Now I'm back into Java and currently trying to catch up on all the front-end Javascript libraries now as well as tinkering with Perl, GO, and Objective-C.

Beautiful Trigonometry - Numberphile

BSR says...

You could recreate this with the exception of 3D. http://www.algodoo.com/.

Been playing with program for years and it's fairly simple once you play with it for a while.

Algodoo is a physics-based 2D sandbox freeware from Algoryx Simulation AB as the successor to the popular physics application Phun. It was released on September 1, 2009 and is presented as: a learning tool, an open ended computer game, an animation tool, and an engineering tool.

GameSoundCon 2010: "Introduction to Game Audio"

artician says...

Oh! And of course: Demoscene!

Demoscene is similar to chiptunes, but spawned about a decade (?) before the NES really popularized game tunes, and came out of Europe's, uh, "demo scene" (computer programming demos usually focused around visuals with accompanying soundtracks).
If you're ever into that kind of thing, I can recommend Nectarine Radio (scenemusic.net), though they occasionally drift into euro-crap disco-pop, they're essentially a searchable/playable database of the history of European (primarily) computer game soundtracks and demo music. Also a very strange, unique genre that shares a significant amount with the game medium!

Can server do consumer stuff like computer games?

oritteropo said:

As a Mac and Linux user, I found Windows server 2012 (like Windows 8, which I haven't used) much easier and more intuitive than some of the older versions.

Microsoft seem to have stolen found inspiration for each new feature from either Linux or Mac

TIE Fighter - Epic Anime short - Go Empire!!

ant says...

Yes. Try GOG, these SW computer games are old. I think there are (add/mod(ification))s to improve them if you want to get fancy. FYI, I never got into WC series.

Nope. I have been a big Star Wars fan since I was a young kid (not quite old enough to have seen ANH or ESB in theaters, but I did see RotJ on the big screen, plus of course watching them all on TV many many times growing up) but somehow I missed out on those games.

Quick google shows Wing Commander 1 as 1990, Wing Commander 3 at 1994, TIE Fighter also in 1994, and X-Wing Alliance in 1999. I played those Wing Commander games (and others), and played a lot of Star Wars games during that span, including stuff like Shadows of the Empire and Rogue Squadron for N64. But somehow the X-Wing and TIE Fighter stuff stayed off my radar at the time.

Should I check GOG?

MacGyver like ingenuity. No reverse...no problem

archwaykitten says...

Pushing the car in neutral seems easier, but even if it's not a great reverse system, it looks like an excellent way to teach his son about physics and problem solving. I solved a puzzle in a computer game in a similar way once, and I still feel proud about it.

"Kerbal" - a Kerbal Space Program movie

AeroMechanical says...

I'm fairly certain, that once it's completed, Kerbal Space Program will easily rank among the greatest computer games ever created.

Neat video too. That's one of the great things about KSP. Not only do you get to create, learn something about engineering, but it also conveys the thrill, tragedy and triumph of exploration.

I still sometimes weep for Jebediah Kerbal. He had too much of the Right Stuff. He should never have boarded that rickety rocket, but he did anyways, that brave bastard. Now he's out there, somewhere. Forever exploring, with no way home.

Unless, of course, the Kraken got him.

Playstation 4 (Ps4) vs. Xbox One - Console Wars The Musical

ant says...

PCs = Requires updates (drivers), configurations, etc. Easy to break too. However, no modding and hacking on consoles.

However, I still prefer computer games over consoles. I just don't have time to deal with them! I am six days behind with Blue's News now.

Zero Punctuation: Next Gen buyers guide

xxovercastxx says...

Q4 is going to be a great time to buy a PS3 or 360. They may finally be cheap enough to justify given there's maybe 3 decent games between them that I can't play better on the PC.

Somewhere along the line, console makers forgot their purpose and destroyed their own market. Stop making half-assed computer games for your stupid consoles and make console games! Also, stop fucking up my computer games so they can be console-friendly!
