The Right Brain vs. The Left Brain

The Right Brain vs. The Left Brain

thehelix says...

I can see it both ways with these kinds of things. But I started out seeing it clockwise and it took me almost the entire video to be able to shift to counter clockwise. Usually it's not so hard! I consider myself primarily left brained, although I do feel somewhat balanced with my right brain.

Which Way Will the Wheel Spin? You May Be Surprised

Flood says...

In the instant the ruler is moved to the right while touching the top wheel, the force of friction between ruler and the wheel results in force applied to the top of the wheel pointing to the right. This results in a clockwise torque applied to the top wheel. The top wheel touches two smaller wheels which transfers the clockwise torque of the top wheel into counter-clockwise torque in the small wheels. The small wheels are touching the ground. The frictional force between the wheels and the ground work to resist movement. So when the small wheels have a counter-clockwise torque, the the frictional force resulting from the contact of the wheels and the ground is resulting in a force at the bottom of the small wheels but points to the left. This results in clockwise torque on the small wheels, which results in a counter-clockwise torque on the top wheel, which results in frictional force on the top of the top wheel point to the left.

So it all balances out right? Well, it would, if the size of all the wheels were the same.

Imagine what would happen if he held the ruler still but moved the table. You'll see that the direction of the surface (relative to the cart) near the larger wheel dictates the direction of the cart.

Rottenseed is right.

Think of it this way: If the net force on the cart system is applied to the right, then the system will accelerate to the right. For the cart to move right, the small wheels must rotate clockwise, and this motion must translate to the big wheel moving counter clockwise.

Trailer for blankfist's movie "The Clockwise Family"

thinker247 says...

You never know. Maybe the script will land in the hands of some famous Hollywood celebrity, and your small film will become a major worldwide blockbuster, starring Steven Seagal!

Seagal: "These two women are planning on having sex with me." *runs away, with arms flailing like a bitch*

Trust me, this movie will never be on the big screen. You may see it on IFC or in Blockbuster. [/pragmatism]

Yeah. True. They end up being rounded octagons, which is why I call them dots.

Besides, lets face it dots are cooler.

In reply to this comment by schmawy:
By 'dot' you mean each octagonal magnet?

In reply to this comment by MycroftHomlz:
The current loop goes on each dot. And then the field lines come out of the dot adding coherently in the center.

Hey Schmawy,

Here is what I need, see what you can do.

Draw four octagons as I have drawn them. Then add a circular line to indicate a current(a 3/4 circle with an arrow on one end).

http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/magnetic/elemag.html

If the current goes clockwise then it produces a magnetic field that is oriented down(so S to N), counter clockwise it goes the other way.(I would prefer ccw) I need them to draw one arrow pointing out of octagons.

These little dots are essentially little bar magnets, and I want to indicate that they add coherently in a specific place. Namely the little square in the middle. The next thing to add is some magnetic field lines, i.e. loops, but oriented them from the top view so they look like 'x's. In this way it will become clear that the center part they are all adding together.

The final step is to make a big arrow pointing down (if the currents are ccw). This would signify them adding. Make this arrow a different color.

Multiplayer Table Tennis - Only the Geekiest Nerds Allowed

Kluz says...

That is so lame.
I don't find it fun or cool almost at all.
To play in the way they're doing in the video the traditional rectangular table is obviously better . Yeah , maybe not to play 3vs.3 (I'm not a big fan of doubles , let alone 3 players for side).
Though that circular table would be good for a trivial version of table tennis you play in many players conterporary , running around the table(we did it anti-clockwise). It's kind of childish , but with that table it would be perfect (to begin , more safe : I can remeber crashing my leg on the angle while trying to run fast and be on position ) .
