Ren - Losing it

xcalibur2k says...

Ren has such an insane catalog of original music, if you even remotely like this. check out the rest, rock, rap, folk music. Guy does it all!

Sigur Rös - Hopípolla + bloody nose

StukaFox says...

The first time I flew to Iceland on the aptly-named Iceland Air, the "entertainment" consisted of the entire catalog of Sigur Ros and Bjork. The seat-back screens in the cheap seats had a list of movies that an old UHF channel would have turned its nose up at, and an endless loop of four commercials for wonderful Iceland -- in Icelandic -- that you couldn't turn off. They also insisted in asking people to pay in isk for Icelandic food, which was both a novelty, an annoyance and a source of nausea all in one.
That said, it was better than Air France by a long shot.

Walk This Way: Polka Edition (There I Ruined It)

moonsammy says...

Realized I should perhaps clarify - the song being "sketchy as hell" has nothing to do with "There I Ruined It" making an edit, and everything to do with Steven Tyler being a creep. Damned talented rocker yes, but his personal history leaves much to be desired. This song and a handful of others from Aerosmith's catalog really lean into the "sweet young thing" theme, which... ewwww....

Let's talk about Trump going to the hospital....

-Including race as a determining factor in your admission score
as a 'liberal' ideal
This IS happening broadly, link to how and arguments for why it is 'good'
https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2019/10/03/harvard-beat-an-effort-end-its-use-race-factor-admissions-what-will-supreme-court-do/
https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/race/news/2019/10/01/471085/5-reasons-support-affirmative-action-college-admissions/

-Enforcement of a race based "day of absence" where based on your race you were to be 'kicked off' campus for the day
Specifically the day of absence was at evergreen:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evergreen_State_College#2017_protests
Similarly reverse racist attitudes though are common enough, like chasing out a student journalist here for simply covering an event:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kVGtqp7usw

-"deplatforming" people for having dissenting opinions
Jordan Peterson is the biggest example, but my local uni has also banned pro-life student clubs too, so maybe I'm a little Canada biased on this?

-The entire circle-jerk of intersectionalism:
---"whiteness" needs to be defined as something inherently negative
Here's the Standford course on it if you or your parents wanna enrol:
https://explorecourses.stanford.edu/search?view=catalog&filter-coursestatus-Active=on&page=0&catalog=&q=CSRE+32SI%3A+Whiteness&collapse=

---"Racism" needs to redefined as not simply racial prejudice, but racial prejudice PLUS power(you know, so only white people can be racist under the new definition)
Likewise offered at Stanford, unless this is the lone critical race theory course that doesn't champion the above prejudice+power definition.
https://law.stanford.edu/courses/critical-race-theory/

---"systemic racism" getting defined as anything with unequal outcomes, so if asian students do too well in math it must mean the system is favouring them and we need to step in

And I'm out of time,

but seriously I'm a little baffled this was remotely controversial? Identity politics is a game the left has been playing at HARD for at minimum the decades since Affirmative Action was launched. The notion that the idea would eventually get national level push back should have been easy to see coming.

Idiots Surprised Crosby Stills Nash And Young Are Anti War

RFlagg says...

It's like when some Republicans tried to use "Born in the USA"... like did they actually listen to the full song? Did they not listen to the rest of Bruce's catalog? Clearly, not a Republican song, clearly not a Republican sort of guy based on his other songs.

Do the people at the concert here not remember what Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young stood for? Do they just listen to the music, and not pay attention to the lyrics, until one comes up that is a bit more clear? "It was a little political", yes... Jesus Christ, listen to their catalog, they are solid left, anti-war...

It just dumbfounds me, why, if you are far right, would you like CSN? Why does Paul Ryan, like Rage Against the Machine, when everything their music stands for is against all he stands for? I just don't get it.

John Oliver - Mike Pence

newtboy says...

Thanks to asshats abusing their religious privileges, that's where we are today. Many places do require businesses offering a service to not discriminate based on personal preference.

If that Muslim baker makes Buddha cakes and Jesus cakes on request, yes....so he should limit his creativity across the board or not at all....or work in his mosque bakery.

If they make made to order pro choice cakes, yes, they should make made to order anti choice cakes.

If they make on request cakes for other notable figures, no....but I would expect Hitler to look pretty horrible.

Easy solution here, stop doing made to order cakes. Offer only what you're comfortable making, not requests, not personalized...have a catalog. Once you offer to make what the customer requests, you give up your right to be offended by it, for cash.

Edit: Keep in mind, this is often about being offended not by what they're asked to make, but who the customer is. Not rainbow wedding cakes with leather clad grooms and cocks everywhere, but fancy white cakes with flowers for a gay wedding.
Side note, Jews can't refuse service in their public establishments to any German, can they, and they have a much better reason to do so.

bcglorf said:

Do you mean no, you believe by force of law if your business is making cakes, you must print any and all messages requested by customers?

A Muslim baker should be required by law to produce a cake depicting the prophet?

Pro-Choice bakers should be required by law to produce cakes with graphic imagery of aborted fetuses?

Jewish bakers shouldn't be allowed to refuse to make a birthday cake for Hitler's birthday?

I get that right to refuse to do certain kinds of business can be touchy, but IMO it's even more dangerous to start demanding business owners lose the freedom to decline business that although legal goes against their own values.

Understanding Comfortably Numb

Ah, the only track off The Wall I ever liked. It's always bothered me that early Floyd is killer and all of those junior high / high school The Wall worshippers (who did not listen to early Floyd) really put me off on the Floyd until I got into bands that I consider even better than Floyd - like Faust and CAN, and once my head was straight for real psychedelic music of the late 60's & early 70's - went back into the Floyd catalog and found out how great they were before The (fucking) Wall. Check out Live at Pompeii if you're a Floyd fan and never seen it.

Star Trek: Discovery | Official Trailer | Netflix

RFlagg says...

I'd give the show half a chance if it wasn't for needing yet another new subscription service... Sorry CBS, but there's not enough in your catalog to make me pay yet another monthly fee... and still have commercials... $6 for regular commercials... $9 for limited commercials... no thank you. Were it all on Netflix as it will be elsewhere...

They still send out the catalogs monthly.

Cabela's is a sporting (as in hunting/fishing type activities, no athletics) goods catalog business. They expanded from that into a few really huge stores of over 200,000 square feet, recent stores are closer to 80,000-100,000. The really big stores were travel destinations for sporting enthusiasts. I'm not sure about the smaller ones, but the big 225,000 size stores had restaurants. Most of the stores have a large "conservation mountain" of mounted animals, some have aquariums (the one in Columbus has a 5,000 gallon one). I think some of them even had climbing walls. Other chain stores that have similar things are Bass Pro Shops, Gander Mountain...

My step father is a taxidermist and sportsman, so he gets the catalog. He's never done work for them, though he's done some for one of the local stores. I haven't seen a catalog for a long time, so either he stopped getting it or they stopped sending it out in mass and use their online store as the catalog was probably expensive.

WTF Cops?! - Two Racist Texts and a Lie

heropsycho says...

The only thing I will say is just because blatantly racist jokes are said, that doesn't automatically mean someone is racist.

A friend and I will literally try to say the most god awful racist crap to each other about black people partly to make fun of racism and to just be so shockingly horrifying that it's funny. We also make horrifyingly sexist jokes, I make jokes about Canada (he lives there), and he makes 'Murica jokes. We even make horrifyingly awful "yo mamma" jokes. But the key is we absolutely positively know for a fact that neither of us believe any of it. If our chat logs only were cataloged and examined, we'd appear to be members of the KKK who regularly fornicated with each other's mothers while repeatedly demanding women make us sandwiches.

I don't know enough about the specifics of this incident if this notion is applicable or not. However, with everything going on with racial issues and policing, it's certainly amazingly tone deaf at best.
