;) Pot Legalization Cost Jobs? Treetop Flyer: Stephen Stills

GenjiKilpatrick says...

..wtf does this song have to do with legalization?

Also, who the fuck sincerely agrees that veterans losing a possible job opportunity outweighs the benefits of decriminalization?

"Suuure we could have:
Collected 9 billion in tax revenue,
Saved millions in prison housing & court processing fees,
Eliminated 60% of the income from most drug cartels and
Restored the public's faith in & cooperation with law enforcement..

but at least Bob's still a Narco Pilot!"

Crips And Bloods: Made In America

NordlichReiter says...

Some people don't think it happens because they never see it. Some of us have, and seen the data that supports it. Gangs do exist, and it is a problem. It's a bad stereotype but low house prices seem to lead to more gangs. It's a good reason to see how these things were created.

Some of these gangs are the creations of invisible constructs. Gangs now days are not just gangs, they are criminal organizations like Mafia or Cartels.

MS-13 is a big gang now that everyone is afraid of, mostly propaganda. As much as I like to believe my neighborhood is a nice place police reports have proved different. In the midst of trying to stop crime they have increased the restrictions have limited the "civilians" civil liberties.

Robin Hood Tax on the Rich to Benefit the Poor

NetRunner says...

>> ^MaxWilder:
And NetRunner, you really think there's a lot of competition in banking? Come on. There's like three or four major corporations running all the banks. Even without the cost being transferred directly to the average mortgagee or checking account holder, this still looks like a boondoggle to funnel more cash through the government. I'm not all that paranoid about government corruption, but nobody can deny the tendency for government pork projects and general waste.

I meant my questions mostly to serve as a Socratic way of making a point.

You answered the one about competition, and said that in effect there ain't no competition. I agree.

Here's my next question along that chain: What exactly determines their profit margin then? In that environment, aren't profits exactly like a tax, only instead of having a plebiscite to determine the rate, and having the money dispensed in some public program, it's being set and pocketed by some of the wealthiest people in modern society?

Here in the US, we're still expecting competition. The UK seems to regulate from the assumption of an effective cartel. We should either follow their example, or end the cartel.

Oh, and about the tax "slowing down the economy", it's really just a disincentive to engage in high volume short term trading, or more to the point, it encourages investors to use longer term investment strategies. It doesn't seem to me that that would necessarily raise unemployment, in fact it might actually make the economy a lot less prone to booms and busts.

Home Taping is Killing Music

Matthu says...

I haven't bought a record since I paid $18.99 for Eminem's Marshall Mathers LP.

You think I'm going to dish out hundreds of dollars a year to here the latest music? Sorry... I'm not a sony CEO.

Maybe the record label cartels should pay their composers more then 7 goddamn cents per copy sold? And the artists? How much do they make per copy sold? 25 cents? 1 dollar? Where does the rest go?

It goes to the label. And what's the labels job? From my understanding the label's job is to call the music store and say hey this is good, put it on your shelf. So essentially without the record labels the artists wouldn't be on any shelves. Oh wait... we don't even need shelves anymore.

I'd gladly screw Britney Spears out of a dollar if I can screw Sony Music Entertainment out of 10 dollars.

Furthermore, these are evil corporations who stand ONLY for profit. So why should I not stand only for profit? It's disgusting. All these corporations who can never be held morally or legally resposible for anything they do and who operate *SOLELY* for profit now are crying, literally crying because of the apathy of the consumer when it comes to piracy.

I do wish I could make a contribution to some artists. Eminem for example. I'd love to send him 20$ for his hard work.

US Border Patrol tries to take passenger's camera

blankfist says...

>> ^littledragon_79:
Wow, the y/t poster is a paranoid moron. He should try reading the law as to how/where CBP are allowed to operate. And if he doesn't like it write his reps or run for office. Since the checkpoint is inland, he would be fine then with the local SO or State Police running it? Or maybe the FBI or military? And an illegal working for CBP? Nice try.
I know there's a lot of anti-establishment, the cops are always wrong, we live in a police state mentality here, but don't get too paranoid folks. The cops aren't always wrong, sometimes they need to use force (but F tasers), we don't live in Nazi Germany, and we should be vigilant in keeping government in check. But harassing these guys is like harassing a Walmart greeter because you don't like their policies. Dick move.
As for the whole camera thing, who cares if the guy has a camera. Do your job, and don't be a dick about it. Although, my instructors old us not to advertise that we were BP Agents and try not to have pics taken...since some cartels have bounties out for killing Agents.

The y/t poster is paranoid. I doubt the border patrol agent is "illegal", though that's incidental. First, BP are nothing like Walmart greeters. That's a bad analogy. Harassing someone who wants to keep you from freely moving in a supposed free country and trying to steal your private property is nothing like harassing a gentle underpaid elderly woman saying hi to everyone entering Walmart. The BP are pests and abuse their power constantly.

And, yes, we do live in a police state once the government recognizes it has a right to kill its own citizens without due process. There's nothing paranoid about noticing the increased security measures that encroach on our liberties, or states forcing subversives to register, or little 12-year old girls being marched out of class wearing handcuffs, or the countless cases where law enforcement destroy videotape evidence, or the endless beat first ask questions later cases, or local and state police being supplied military weapons by the Pentagon, or being arrested for videotaping officers, or the use of sedatives on the public by police officers.

That's just to name a few.

You've not been inconvenienced by them have you? Their searches are haphazard, and they cause massive backups on the road for miles. They make a bad situation worse, and fuck that. You have the right to tape any fucking peace officer you wish. Paranoid or not. They should be afraid of the US citizen we should not be afraid of them. The moment he reached his hand into that car he violated the 4th ammendment.

Seeing as to how the US citizen did not have anyone there to save his ass I think he was quite in the right to do what he did. You reach your hand into my car without proper protocol you may come back with a stump. The video proves that the cop did not have Probable Cause to enter the vehicle ergo; he should be removed from duty as he is a danger to the public.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

CIA Video Of Missionary Plane Shootdown

BoneyD says...

It's not entirely clear from the video, but was it the case that they were flying in that area without a flight plan or proper clearance? I mean, obviously this is a horrible outcome for such a mistake and that fighter pilot sounded like he was just itching to kill something... but the above is true, doesn't the family have to assume some portion of the responsibility here? Shouldn't they have known that it was a no-fly area, strictly (and lethally) enforced?

All that said, clearly this is an utter waste of life and what a disgrace this 'war on drugs' has become. There's got to be a better way to defeat the incredibly profitable incentives that drug cartels have to traffick narcotics.

Robert Erickson PWNS Anti-Immigrant Rally - Final Edit

GenjiKilpatrick says...

sorta like how all those european immigrants illegally invaded the americas?

and by invade i mean: showing up unannounced with guns and swords and killing the heads of state rather then asking permission to live with them

if a band of mexican drug lords started killing city council members, state senators and then built settlements for their cartels, it would be the thing.

but again, none of that matters to you because you predefined your lineage as somehow special or better then brown people.

Judge Jim Gray - 5 good reasons to decriminalize pot & hemp

kagenin says...

Thanks for the quality award, Jigga!

If weed becomes decriminalized, then the weed that comes from Mexico (a lot of which finances the cartels down there) won't be worth as much to the US market, as domestically grown weed will essentially flood the markets. Yet another excuse to buy local. The cartels would have a hard time making solid profits.

>> ^dystopianfuturetoday:
I signed a petition for a ballot initiative for legal weed yesterday. Fingers are crossed that it makes it on the ballot.

Let's hope that's what you actually signed on to. A few years ago, a false petition was being circulated by hard-line right-wingers. Those who signed the fake petition had their voter registrations changed without their consent. (And the right bitches about ACORN...) Of course, I don't think someone would be stupid enough to try that again (not that there were any repercussions for those who committed that act of voter registration fraud).

Judge Jim Gray - 5 good reasons to decriminalize pot & hemp

littledragon_79 says...

I've never smoked pot and never will, but I would like to see it decriminalized/legalized. Like the good judge said, there are some real (and really good) benefits. And who knows, maybe there would even be a drop in gang/drug cartel violence and maybe we could better afford health care initiatives and the like.
