Having spent a great deal of time in Thailand over the last 20 years I agree with your comment. I would like to add that one would have to really be poking the hornets nest extremely hard to get carted off to a re-education camp or kicked out the country if you are an expat.

Mind you the last major use of those camps was due to bombs going off in central Bangkok back around 2008. I still have a hard time finding a public trash can when I visit.

Its possible a few were planted for documentary purposes. If you watch Honnolds videos you will see he has at least 2 or 3 camera guys planted on the faces he climbs. The majority are other climbers. You can see the two blow throw many camps on the way up.

In a way Scahill is like a less educated\refined version of Noam Chomsky. The world is incredibly complicated and the singular and lone focus on American mistakes paints a deceptive picture. Saddam waged two campaigns of genocide against his own people. When America saw the abuses at Abu Ghraib, they shut it down and attempted to punish those responsible. When Saddam's brother used chemical weapons to exterminate Kurdish civilians Saddam commended him for it. Guantanamo is bad, but it doesn't mean we should fail to acknowledge the concentration camps that Saddam operated during his genocide of the Kurds. It doesn't mean it's unfair to observe that conditions in Saddam's prisons across the country were far more cruel during his entire reign.

I'm not sure if feminism and men's rights are quite the same thing though. Personally I feel that both movements should be for the betterment of society, for both men and women, but I think it is perhaps unavoidable that feminism has a focus on the issues women face. If men have their own banner to rally behind how do we avoid this boy vs girl playground bullshit that it tends to devolve to. Should we all not have a foot in each camp, men fighting for women's issues and women for men's. Would we call this feminism or something else?
