Award winning teacher Kerstin Westcott's resignation speech

Mordhaus says...

Former Washington Middle School teacher Kerstin Westcott resigned in front of the school board after detailing incidents of violence, abuse, and fear for the safety of students and staff.

Westcott goes on to detail the following incidents that happened during the 2016-2017 school year:

-"Student set 3 fires in the bathrooms-we were never evacuated"
-"[Redacted] was kicked in the face during a fight and his glasses were broken"
-"Drugs and cigarettes have been both sold and used in and around the school"
-"So many fights that students have started arming themselves with weapons (including brass knuckles, knives, a large stick, and a lock) with which to fight"
-"Student jumped and beaten to the ground and kicked in the head and stomach repeatedly while she was down"
-"Student approached a teacher personally and said he had a gun and was going to shoot that teacher"
-"Student told staff, 'I am going to kill the teacher. I am going to get a shotgun and find out where he lives. Watch me. I am not kidding.'"

During a fight, Westcott recalls an administrator telling a teacher, "We're numb to fights around here. Is it a real fight?"

The letter says 11 percent of Washington Middle School students were in the "red zone" for behavior, meaning they had committed at least six major offenses during the school year.

Brass Against - Wake Up

MilkmanDan says...

FUCK YEAH!

Accomplishing the guitar solo parts with strong suits of various brass -- sax, trombone, trumpet: Awesome.

Female singer keeping the feel and style of the original (male) vocals, while also putting a unique spin on it: Awesome.

Idea, execution, production: Awesome.

That's a full-on trifecta of badass!

Houston Cop To Rescuers-"We've Had Enough"

littledragon_79 says...

If he is "following orders", then the top brass needs to get their shit together. There's no reason they can't organize the volunteers and dispatch them so they know who/where they are and what areas have already been helped. But I guess when your town's underwater, fuck help from Yankees.

Part of me wishes the driver would have just said, "There's a nice way to do that". I can't speak for the officer, but on it's face the interaction is shitty. Maybe he's super stressed about his own stuff. Maybe he's upset about having to help others and no one to help him. Maybe he thinks his orders (if there are any) are really stupid and is at odds with his superiors.

Whatever the case, ultimately he ends up doing a poor job of representing his dept., the city, and cops in general. Hope he and others learn.

Philip Glass joue Mad Rush

BSR says...

As far as I know, this is a piano solo. But at certain times I can hear strings and brass. Although you can't see the whole orchestra I'm pretty sure no other instruments join in. Is it possible he's that good to create the essence of strings and brass with just the keyboard?

Example: from 2:45 - 4:00

And the woman in the right side background, with her knitted brow, seems very touched by the piece or she's thinking, "let's speed this up a bit."

Star Trek: Discovery - First Look Trailer

MilkmanDan says...

Hmm. I don't like the temporal setting, pre-TOS. As forward-thinking as TOS was for the 60s, bridge officers and brass clearly tended to be male. Now, pre-TOS, we've got a female Captain and 1st Officer on the same ship. Plus, Enterprise already tried the whole prequel thing and was generally not as warmly received as the other series.

Don't like the look of the Klingons. The whole Levodian flu thing was clearly a retcon to distinguish them from humans beyond bushy eyebrows and bronze makeup, but it was a definite improvement and set the standard going forward. Why mess with that?

The bit about "never being able to learn Vulcan" (language) made me jump to the conclusion that Sonequa Martin-Green's character was going to be a young Uhura. Guess that is wrong. She's looking foxy as hell though -- probably the best thing about the trailer in my opinion!

I guess I agree with a lot here that seem to have some doubts about this. Willing and hopeful to be proven wrong though!

officer Izzo-getting fired for challenging a corrupt system

enoch says...

@newtboy
hey man, thanks for giving him a shot.
this was the first video i ever watched of officer izzo, and i forgot where i even came across him.

maybe facebook?
i dunno, but i have many facebook friends who are cops and corrections officers.so probably.

i really dug how he addressed the disparity of poor neighborhoods, and the working poor to those of more privileged backgrounds.how he,as an officer,is forced to further compound their struggles by:tickets/racial profiling and as he pointed out..arrest arrest arrest.

from what i gather (because i couldn't find the original) he had posted a video that many of his fellow officers had found offensive and controversial.this video appears to be a clarification directed towards his fellow officers who could not understand why he was criticizing his own profession, and therefore criticizing THEM.

it appears he didn't go the "hey guys,i am sorry" but rather doubled down by clarifying what he felt law enforcement SHOULD be and not what it had become.

he blames the command staff, and in many of his videos he repeats that accusation.i remember even here on the sift we had a cop explain that many of the things we were all bitching about, and being offended by,were actually due to the command structure and not the patrol officers themselves.

which has a ring of truth to my ears being ex military.

i love how he directly speaks of how some patrol officers are forced to do unethical and immoral acts, while the command staff ignores those officers with the most facile of justifications:hey,it's legal.

that puts the officer at risk.just like a bad command staff in the military puts the enlisted man at risk.i mean, just look at the suicide stats for todays military..twenty two military men commit suicide daily, and how does the military brass respond?

those men had mental issues.

oh really? EVERY single one of them?
either there is a suicide epidemic or maybe..maaaaaybe...those who are in command, and whose responsibility it is for the well being of their men,are a gaggle of incompetent fuckwads.who do not have the courage nor integrity to own up to their own epic failures as commanders.

listening to officer Izzo,i suspect there are many parallels between military service and law enforcement.

i respect how he states he is doing this for the everyday patrolmen, even the ones who disagree and are criticizing him.

i think it is a good thing to hear a perspective from a man who does the job.to hear that even the cops are going "what the fuck".

anyways, thanks for watching man,i hope others give officer Izzo a chance as well.

Michael Moore perfectly encapsulated why Trump won

MilkmanDan says...

Yeah, I think he pretty much nailed it.

If you are dismayed by what has happened, please consider:

* Perhaps some of your anger should be directed at the Democrat party brass. They pulled hard for Hillary from day one. They have superdelegates because they don't trust Democrat voters to choose "correctly". All of them swung for Hillary, without even seriously considering any alternative. The brass dismissed Sanders as unelectable and nutty. Oops.

If there were no superdelegates, and the party hadn't consistently propped up Hillary as their highly favored candidate, the primaries would likely have been very different. And my contention is that Trump vs Sanders would have ended in a landslide victory for Sanders. Because Sanders would have appealed to these "blow up the system" people too, AND been much more palatable to people on the fence than Trump.

I think Trump is an idiot blowhard. I think he will make a terrible president (not apocalyptically terrible, but terrible). BUT, I am willing to give him a chance to prove me wrong. I would have been willing to give Hillary a chance if she had won, too.

Outside of the immediate setback that this represents to the Democrat party, I think the future of the party is actually extremely bright -- IF they learn the lesson that they need to from this election. Choose candidates that people like. People that are actually worth voting FOR, rather than propping up someone that you hope will be seen as the "lesser of two evils".
