Really? Even after watching this trailer, and the previous two teasers?

This is the man who directed stuff like Magnolia, Boogie Nights, and There Will Be Blood. Zero interest? Really? Then put up your dukes, sir.

It's always been known that Paul Thomas Anderson's (Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood) The Master was in some way inspired by the life of L. Ron Hubbard, the man who not only gave the world the cinematic gift that is Battlefield Earth [sic (puke)], but who founded the Church of Scientology. The first two teaser trailers for the film, however, played coy with how strong that connection is. They've simply been relatively plot-free (but beautifully shot) glimpses at the troubled life of an alcoholic played by Joaquin Phoenix.

This full trailer, however, gives us our first substantial look at the eponymous figure inspired by Hubbard, played in the film by Philip Seymour Hoffman, who seems to be having a spot of trouble trying to recruit and keep Phoenix into his organization.

It's more like an observation: PTA appears to be leaving behind the style that brought him (Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia) and headed into Terrence Malick territory (There Will Be Blood, The Master) with Punch Drunk Love as a bridge betwixt the two styles.

Love the Gap band, and this tune in particular! I hate to rain on the OP's parade (a little), but this awesome performance is actually just a lip-sync/mime along to the album track - as was typically the case on Soul Train in those days. So the band isn't really playing the tune here, just boogie-ing down while they pretend.

Still though, awesome to see those guys sell it, and in their prime...

They should cut in scenes of Moore from Boogie Nights
