The 49 Best Sequel-Less Games (Videogames Talk Post)

xxovercastxx says...

Some of these games are the classics they are because they didn't come out of a sequel machine.

Quite a few of these games should not have sequels. Some because a sequel could only fail to meet expectations, some because they were downright terrible to begin with, and others because there's just no place for one.

  • Uniracers - "Uniracers 2" could be a crappy flash game, at best. Leave it alone.
  • Red Dead Revolver - Not only should there never, ever be a sequel, but I hope a few people lost their jobs for creating the original.
  • Psi-Ops - A $50 gimmick. By all means, reuse some of the ideas, but no sequel, please.
  • Tech Romancer - I'm greatly skeptical of any game, show, movie, etc with a title consisting of randomly chosen unrelated English words. I'm looking at you Guilty Gear, Melty Blood, Sailor Moon, One Piece Gear Spirit, Groove Adventure Rave Fighting Live, etc.
  • Call of Cthulhu - 3 sequels were planned, but the dev went out of business.
  • Blade Runner - I'd rather see a modern remake than a sequel. A new story in the universe.
  • The Last Express - Leave it alone.
  • MULE - The inspiration for an entire genre as well as influencing others. It doesn't need a true sequel. Also, I think the marketability of a game about mechanical equine is pretty poor these days.
  • Rampart - See Uniracers
  • Giants: Citizen Kabuto - Inexplicably absent from the list.

And some of those games should never have sequels, this includes Blade Runner, Grim Fandango and any other great adventure game listed there.

Visual Futurist: The Art & Life of Syd Mead

schmawy says...

I'm a professional ID, and let me tell you, his name comes up during critiques all the time. I really like that quote "reminds you of something you've never seen before". I'm a huge advocate of that visual evolution of objects. You should be able to relate an object to what came before, and imagine what it might look like in the future.

Apparently the hotweels guy never saw the "happy place" blade runner was set in.

Blade Runner - Tears in Rain

scottishmartialarts says...

"I just saw this on the big screen a few weeks ago. Awesome movie."

You lucky bastard. Blade Runner is one of my all time favorite movies and I was so excited when I first heard that the Final Cut would get a theatrical run. Then my excitement was brutally crushed when I discovered it was not going to play ANYWHERE in the SF Bay Area. Chicago got it but not San Francisco? WTF?

SciFi Books that should be Made into Movies (Scifi Talk Post)

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

I know what you mean about the crap movies made from SF books. Still, I long for good SF movies. I'm hoping there will be some kind of SF renaissance.

So many good books out there waiting for someone with vision. Blade Runner is a good example of a movie that used the book for a jumping off point, to become something different but good.

I love Bladerunner but I also wish that someone would "reimagineeer" it closer to the book. So many cool things were cut out.
