Trump: Biden Will "listen to the scientists"

StukaFox says...

Dude, have you BEEN to Carson City? Due to familial attachments, I find myself in that berg about once a year. The people are nice enough, but this ain't exactly Mensa's fishing grounds. I needed a computer fixed, so I go to the address of the local computer repair guy. I get there and it's actually a pool hall lined with Hombres' bikes. I thought, "I don't give a shit if this is a Cray, I'm not going in there."

That fucking computer is STILL broken and I haven't been back since Covid hit.

Flying over Iceland (Part. II)

newtboy says...

Gorgeous. I went there last summer. It is that stunning. I strongly suggest it as a vacation destination to anyone adventurous.

BUT.....

When you spend the time, energy, and exorbitant amounts of money to go see the unspoiled wilderness and nature, and some asshole ruins it by flying their drone overhead for a few hours, it's enraging.
That happened to us twice (maybe by the same group at different places, we aren't sure). I was ready to grab that drone and throw it in the berg filled lagoon, or the beautiful collimated basalt waterfall they were flying in front of. I had to wait over an hour at the waterfall for the assholes to move out of the picture....they had walked past the 'don't go past this sign' signs to get the shots they wanted right in front of the falls, and refused to move or get back on the trail.

If you own a drone, please be respectful of the rules and of others, or know that it's your fault when someone loses it and destroys your toy. Don't act like the world belongs to you, and other people's peaceful enjoyment of natural areas don't matter.
Your youtube views don't trump my right to peace and quiet in nature.
I feel like drones need to be regulated in public spaces for that reason. Not totally banned, but given specific days when it's allowed and make most parks and all natural parks off limits at all other times.
Drone footage is amazing, drones buzzing overhead are amazingly annoying.

Deepwater Horizon (2016) – Official Movie Teaser Trailer

Mordhaus says...

On January 30, 2015, it was reported that Lone Survivor director Peter Berg had replaced Chandor to re-team with Wahlberg for the film. Chandor exited due to some creative differences.

Read, 'not enough sturm und drang action sequences for a disaster movie', get a new director.

Deepwater Horizon (2016) – Official Movie Teaser Trailer

CrushBug says...

While I basically agree with you, Peter Berg is known for focusing on the people aspect of these kinds of stories, regardless of the politics of situation. The people working on that rig didn't make the whole situation happen.

I always liked the first episode of The Newsroom for their use of this story.

I have seen a few documentaries on the subject (and some of them here on the 'Sift) but as you say, I think we would all benefit if there was a better, more visible telling of the truth of what happened.

Any movie that has Deepwater Horizon in the title and is not a documentary about corporate corruption, neglect, greed and massive environmental damage seems embarrassing. The whole idea seems distasteful and kinda turns my stomach.

South Park Parody of Police Brutality and White Privilege

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Wealth Gap

chingalera says...

CEs' right-The illusion he described is the only tangible evidence that the shit you've heard at the last pep-rally has any meaning other than to enhance or lull you into a somnambulistic satisfaction of the slave-mentality of, 'rah-rah, American way.' This bergs' been sold on the block already and you have the privilege of witnessing the pangs of chaotic birth-spawn and participating in planet now. That you are satisfied with your plight is evidence of an effective, Satanic pogrom.

It's a hacking convention, basically. I've been attending since the 26C3, the very year that Assange and Domscheit-Berg introduced WikiLeaks 1.0.

Up until this year, very few people outside the community cared about the topics that were discussed. Snowden really lifted attendence and media attention to new heights, even though the public still doesn't care about some crucial topics such as the vulnerability of mobile networks or an entire host of topics about the pitiful state of affairs in Germany.

Speaking of, you're really missing out on the most entertaining events of the entire congress. They always provide a real time translation, but I'm not sure if any stream dumps include the additional audio track.

Just two examples:
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=to48QrlodDI

The first talk details how Germany was the most densely monitored country in history, at least from '49 to '90. Every phone call logged, every piece of mail scanned by the US, the UK or France. This includes everything coming from or going to East Germany. Ironically, the most important station for the monitoring of intra-German mail now hosts Amazon's largest distribution center in Europe.

The second talk is quite simply the greatest review of 2013 from a nerd's perspective.

Edit: yikes, this was supposed to be much shorter.

I had to google that phrase, lol. I too had a bunch of chuckles watching this one. Thank you kindly! I read in one of your comments that you attended 30C3. I had no clue of this event and now I am all over these damn vids. I try not to watch to many at once, but I really crave and enjoy hearing what they all have to share. Thanks again!

Cop Sexually Assaults Woman Then Arrests Her For Protesting

Now if you would have originally said "this kind of event is the tip of the ice berg". That sounds reasonable ,but what you said to someone who expressed there being saddened by the situation is "This is hardly worth crying over. She got felt up. There are girls that were raped". That my friend makes you look insensitive, and lacking in empathy. Which in my book is not very cool.

But that's beside the point.

Quick Tip: How to Make Perfect Bacon Every Time

bmacs27 says...

>> ^jonny:

Was just about to leave the exact same comment. Cast iron pots and pans rule. Pot roast in a cast iron dutch oven > lousy sex.
>> ^probie:
I must be the only person left on Earth that still prefers bacon from a well seasoned cast iron skillet.

Plus it helps season your skillet.

>> ^MonkeySpank:

Forget Bacon! Somebody post a video on how to make the perfect canna-butter or canna-oil. I've been trying to master the perfect canna-oil for a year now.

Low boil/simmer canna, butter, alcohol (ever clear or whatever), and water for a while (I don't know, a couple hours or so?). Afterwards, drain through a cheesecloth into a glass mixing bowl to remove canna material (trust me you don't need it, just try and wring out whatever you can). Put the bowl into fridge until you have a floating berg of green, delicious rendered butter on top. 7g (well ground) to a stick of butter should about do you right proper. Use the butter as directed in recipes. We usually make about 24 cookies. Be careful. Trust me. None of this "it isn't working yet, I should eat another 3." It's a rookie mistake. 2 for n00bs, 3 for vets. Our cookies come out visibly green, and they ain't pistachio. This can also work well and be a good use for larger quantities of trim ;-).

The Greatest Yodeler in the World - Franzl Lang

luxury_pie says...

German:

Einen Jodler hör ich gern
aus der Näh und von der Fern
Mit der Lieb' im Herzen drin
Singt ihn jede Sennerin

Darum sing ich jedes Jahr
in die Berge, das ist klar
und ich sing mit frohem Sinn
weil ich dann im Urlaub bin

Extensive Joddeling

So ein Jodler liebe Leut
der bringt Stimmung und macht freut
wie ein heller Sonnenschein
leuchtet er ins Herz hinein

Überall im Alpenland
ist so ein Jodler wohl bekannt
immer wieder sing ich sie
diese Jodler Melodie

Extensive Joddeling

English so-and-so translation:

I like a good Jodler
from near and far away
With love in her heart
it is sung by every Sennerin

That's why I sing every year
in the mountains, that is clear
and I sing with great rejoice
because I'm on vacation, yo!

Extensive Joddeling

Such a Jodler, dear folks
is quite entertaining and enjoyable
like a bright sunbeam
he shines into your heart

Everywhere in the alps
a Jodler like this is very well known
Time and time again I sing
this Jodler melody

Extensive Joddeling again.

Feel free to add any rhyming structure.

Battleship the movie!

Sarzy says...

If I hadn't known any better I'd swear this was directed by Michael Bay -- it doesn't look like Peter Berg's usual style at all (which isn't a bad thing to me, since I kind of hate Peter Berg. I know some people like him though).
