Asimov on superstition, religion, and rationality

newtboy says...

I love the sideburns.

I'm pretty certain he would be happy to be in that group of deep thinkers instead of one with dumb ass Elvis, the anti drug-pill popper.

Religious people cannot be wholly logical, belief in the unseen unproven physically impossible and largely disproven and debunked supernatural is not logical or rational. (1) Putting your faith in the unproven is irrational and illogical, then using that misguided belief as a cudgel to berate others as +-99% of religious people do is just evil. Way worse than justifying military weapons in the name of science (which isn't reality, btw), it uses belief in the irrational and unprovable to justify USING those weapons on innocent populations, often for believing in the wrong irrational and unprovable supernatural ideas.
The worst atheist ape is more rational than the best believer, and on average around 10* more pleasant to talk with. They won't ever tell you all the ridiculous reasons you're going to hell, unless they're arguing directly from the theist's dogma and not reality....I often slam anti gay religious people for the much worse sin of mowing on Sunday, wearing cotton poly blends, or eating shellfish....but I don't believe it or even pretend to.

There's a logical explanation for Trump....think about how intollerably stupid, self centered, and irrational the average person is....now realize the truth that 1/2 are stupider, more self centered, and more irrational than that....add in the fact Trump lost by >3000000 votes but won the electoral college anyway, and boom, it makes sense. Maddening, soul crushing sense.

X-Secret devil sign on my forehead and spit twice, like Dio's mother taught him.

(1) That which can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.

so what the logic behind those sideburns?

just let it all grow. save on shaving gear. as a writer, he'd fit in more with Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, or Whitman* than Elvis.

on a different angle, the atheist apes can be worse than J.W., Mormons, and Evangelist badgers. if a person wants to believe in a higher power - so what? they can get through their days as serenely as the true science maven. religious people can be logical, brilliant, and still put faith in the unproven. no worse than justifying military weapons in the name of science.

after all, having experienced this president, am pushed to believe in True Evil yet simultaneously believing there is no GOD.

no logic or reason to it other than he is a magical troll, and has cast a spell on the townspeople.

X-- (cross and spit twice)

Trump publicly blows his cover for national emergency

newtboy says...

He was successful.....at beating his face into Pelosi's foot....and at getting less than he was offered.
Now he's successful in undermining his own political argument, admitting there is no emergency and blatantly planning on stealing funding from anti drug funds and the military, Republican third rails.

Unfortunately, an actual emergency isn't required for the president to declare one. Hopefully the theory that Pentagon money can't be diverted for civil projects will hold up, as will every challenge to how he plans on exercising his expanded powers, but with the okeydoke gang on the supreme court, there's no telling.
*quality questioning....deplorable answering

'I can think of nothing more American': Beto O’Rourke

newtboy says...

Sorry, wrong again.
He's a well known, constant liar and convicted fraud. Reasonable people simply don't listen to known liars and frauds.
The >50% approval number was another Trump lie, and was actually his DISAPPROVAL number, his number only exceeds 50% if you only count those still willing to identify as Republicans, a fast shrinking group. Most polls show below 40% approval, he's never approached 50%, unlike most others. Among Democrats he rates around 10%.
https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/

That sentence is not English. Try again.

Um....I critically digest information from dozens of reputable sources and take time to verify what they claim and often post my sources, you get "info" from Trump (a well known liar), Rush (known liar, propagandist, and opioid addict/anti drug spokesman), Dore (a naive internet comedian), and Q (absolute insane retardedness only also insane ignorant idiots would consider believing), but you claim I'm being taken for a ride? LMFAHS!
I'll be worried when you don't think so, because what you believe is just bat shit insane and has zero basis in reality and is served up by known, admitted, practiced liars, a fact you just excuse or blindly ignore every time you're forced to face it.

The Mueller Investigation Is Not A Witch Hunt

newtboy says...

Sweet zombie Jebus, no wonder you're so deluded. Alex Jones might be an improvement, at least he's entertaining in his insanity, and honest that it's an act.
Limbaugh, the anti-drug oxycontin addict?!? WTF, man.
Jimmy Dore, he has some interesting opinions, but is pretty far from an investigative journalist or scholar.
Q? For fuck's sake! You just admitted you're dehabilitatedly brain damaged. Get help.

Stoner Sloth PSA

Mordhaus says...

Ok, so I could not believe this was serious and had to do some research.

Hilariously, it is 100% real and was created by NSW goverment folks in Aussieland as anti-weed propaganda. It has gone viral, but it's suffered some setbacks:

1. The actual scientists that were supposed to back up the NSW psa ads, after seeing the actual ads, completely removed support for them.

2. The website actually was linking to stonersloth.com if you didn't type the URL exactly right. What is that website, you ask? Only an online cannabis store...

3. Mike Baird, the NSW Premier, was unaware of the ads. After seeing them, he posted "Just saw the #stonersloth ads, not sure where [they] found Chewbacca's siblings, but those videos are...quite something." Not a rousing sign of support from your boss, really.

Anyway, you can read more if you want - http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015/dec/20/stoner-sloth-anti-drug-campaign-gets-reality-check-as-medical-experts-walk-away

best anarchist speech i have ever heard

newtboy says...

For those people who DO think that way, I fully agree. I take issue with everyone being lumped in with them, however. I vote, and I always vote for candidates that are anti-drug laws, anti-no victim crime, anti-war (except in defense, then I want an ogre who will smash...but targeted smashing of only the right people!), etc. It was disturbing to listen to him chastise me for trying to fix the system, and being called that which I vote to eradicate. I left off before most of the religious part, but I'm totally with him on most being hypocrites and not following their own teachings/laws.
I was actually thinking more like interstate highways, bridges, other large public works (most of which have not been funded for decades, admittedly).
Yes, I agree, it's broken. I think finance reform is the first step towards fixing it, but not the last by far.
My government represents itself and special interests mostly. Again, finance reform.
There's more than two flavors, I never vote on party lines either.
I get, and even applaud the anger. It's the lack of targeting that anger I had problems with.
Do you just want eyes, or liquefied body in those bottles?

told ya he was pissed.
i admire this mans passion.
in fact,i applaud it.

while i do not agree with his attack therapy tactics and do not subscribe to his over-all conclusions.i absolutely ADORE how he calls out the cognitive dissonance of the american voter.

because he is right.

how can you subscribe to a law that makes prostitution illegal, yet porn legal?
or the guy who deals crack or meth as being a criminal? yet opiates are,by far,the leading cause of death in regards to controlled substances.so who is the bigger criminal?

and what, exactly,IS a criminal?is it because the state says so?if you subscribe to that, then i am a criminal.

i found his condemnation of the christian church to be the most delicious.
jesus christ was an insurrectionist,a radical,a dissident and a dissenter.a zealot in the face of the powered elite.

so how can you fight a war of aggression in jesus christs name?
how can you state that god blesses america with over 2.4 million people incarcerated?or to categorize and demonize those who may be different i.e:gay, lesbian or atheist and yet still call yourself a christian?

i giggled with delight when he pointed out that the very same people who are championing those insurrectionists, dissidents and agitators of the past as somehow being representative of their morals and ethics, are the very same people they are demonizing today for breaking the rules.

this man is so pissed off and i love it.
he says things that will make conformists extremely uncomfortable, and we NEED to be a bit uncomfortable.if only to shake off the apathy and lethargy.

as for the taxes argument..meh..i dont subscribe to the "privatize everything" ,because some things should not be profit driven, but i also do not subscribe to the 'taxes pay for essential services",unless wars of aggression, corporate welfare and big-agribusiness subsidies are considered "essential".

our democracy is broken, our government dysfunctional and serves only to keep the balance of the status quo on top..and fuck the regular dude.

can you REALLY say your government represents you?
ok,go ahead and vote.here are your choices:chocolate or vanilla but both are made by hagen daaz.

you really should watch to the end..he just gets madder and madder.
truths can often be uncomfortable, but that never changes the fact that they are truths.

and goddamn i love your optimism! just cant share it on this issue, though if you could bottle it up i am betting you would make a fortune.

ill have three bottles of newt please...to go.

Sam Harris: Can Psychedelics Help You Expand Your Mind?

newtboy says...

How about "nigger-guy"? I'm sure many think they (including you) should be strung up from the nearest tree.
You intentionally use racist hate speech to describe anti-drug advocates? There are plenty of other derogatory terms you could have chosen that don't make you look overtly racist for no reason.
FAIL.

gorillaman said:

These two ideas go hand-in-hand. It's very nice for us to sit around and swap stories of our experiences with psychedelics, but we have to recognise that we have enemies who want to steal these experiences from us. You can't on the one hand believe that drugs are fine and people should take them if they want to and on the other say, "oh hey, here's this guy who thinks everyone who uses drugs should be kidnapped and locked in a box for years; that cool - live and let live." Is that thinking really something we can even recognise as human? I don't, and we have a right to defend ourselves from it, by say, stringing its advocates up from the nearest tree. So what do we call something subhuman that deserves to be lynched?

Don't mind me since I have been drinking but most of this seems like personal conjecture.

Obama did not Veto NDAA when he said he would.

People where killed overseas without Due process.

I personal don't give two shits over mittens and Kock brothers.

Jackson didn't produce depth it just made it seem cool, but it is more like the anti drug commercial this is your brain on drugs commercials. Shock value.

Obama has promised many things and delivered on little.

I like Noam Chomsky and he has been highly critical of the administration.

He hasn't closed Gitmo and has given no timetable.

Fuck John McCain and his sanctimonious POW bullshit.

I know that it was a rider and his administration fights to keep that one part alive.

Obama is not going to save this country. That believing he will help the country is only prolonging its death. I don't vote for the lesser evil.

Strangest Anti-Drug Ad Ever

GenjiKilpatrick says...

Nah, this is a pretty accurate depiction of how pissed the average "I need to teach you a lesson" parent would react i.e. overreact.

My father did a similar thing when, at age 13, he found out I smoked pot.

Tho instead of swinging a bat at electronics.. He swung my entire body into a wall.

Surprisingly enough.. I don't talk to my father that much, yet still smoke weekly/daily.

So yeah, this PSA should definitely be heeded if you'd like a good parent-child relationship.

>> ^MrFisk:

This might be effective if the parent hadn't bought the stuff. Or maybe the dad was so pissed because the teen took his drugs?
