This Week

newtboy says...

So sorry, but those with real Trump Derangement Syndrome are his supporters (and Trump himself), who are going to find the rest of their lives difficult, having completely abandoned reality and sanity in favor or ridiculous, divisive, self serving lies.

If Trump steals, denies, or cancels the election (the only way he can win) this country won't last 234 weeks.

Before you balk, he's already publicly mused about postponing the election indefinitely and/or tossing out blue state mail in votes completely....but not red states that also went to vote by mail. That's a death knell for the US as a nation.

The state of our union is bankrupt and weak, fading fast in ICU. It won't survive another Trump term. Time to learn Mandarin.

Mourning in America

newtboy says...

Jan. 22: “We have it totally under control."
Feb. 24: “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA.
Feb. 27: “It’s going to disappear."
March 7: “No, I’m not concerned at all."
March 10: “And we’re prepared, and we’re doing a great job with it. And it will go away. Just stay calm. It will go away.”

The states that are opening are doing so against the guidelines Trump himself put forward as the minimum standards for safety....two weeks of decline in New cases.

What a moronic statement....states are crashing their own economies to make Trump look bad?! That's so insane and asinine that if I thought you meant it I would call for a welfare check because you're probably a danger to yourself.

Trump signed off on the biggest socialist handout ever, but 7/8 of that cash doesn't go to citizens, it goes to corporations and their owners like Monty Bennett, including Trump and family. I'm certain they'll go to the supreme court trying to hide the actual amount Trump's family receives. He will likely actually be a billionaire when he leaves office....they all will.

Oh...So when you post videos of old crumbling abandoned buildings in Cuba it's an honest depiction of the entire country, when someone else shows some in America it's out of line and lies....hypocrite. There are way more empty buildings in America today than 3 years ago with unemployment at historic highs.

Making Everywhere Get Apocalyptic 2020

Worst "president" (lost the vote) in 243 years, erratic and inconsistent, frantically rambling incoherently or sleepily mumbling and slurring, daughter- friend's wives- employees- acquaintance- and porn star finger banging and raping Con.....I mean Don.

Trump signed off of shit load of cast for working people and businesses.

This is Newt wet dream.

Anderson Cooper Struggles With Las Vegas Mayor's Logic

newtboy says...

1) Do you see protesters practicing social distancing? Hint, they aren't, because the virus is a liberal hoax to bring down Trump. So moronic, but fine as long as they're only infecting each other. Open businesses and they'll restart the outbreaks and restart the clock on quarantine, wasting all the gains of the last 6 weeks.

2) open or not you'll have no tourists. Tourism is on hold for the moment, and large gatherings too. Casinos would have to rebuild themselves first, they are designed to make social distancing impossible. If no tourists guarantees failure, they Damn well better prepare for failure, because there are no tourists.

3) if they go to work and force a second, longer, more strict quarantine, all that happens anyway plus a few tens of thousands more dead.

4) agreed, and the black and white choice made solely on the basis of improving the economy must ignore the obvious health risks that themselves threaten the economy further. Opening early sets us back months, back to the start of stay at home orders, back to before the economic crash and massive losses, but without first restoring the market or economy. Do you think the economy can handle another crash? Because that's what you'll get if Trump and Trumpsters open before the minimal guidelines have been met....two weeks of declining infections and deaths. Those are Trump's guidelines, probably insufficient, but better than the "we'll be the control group in a pandemic experiment....and better than Trump himself who abandoned his own recommendations days after releasing them and now supports protesters. *facepalm

bobknight33 said:

If you open, even with limited capacity, social distancing you may stay afloat.

If you don't open you will have ZERO tourist. That guarantees failure of business, city, county and the state.

If the employees stay home they will run out of $, go broke, loose the house and car and the job that let them keep it.

Seeing thing as a black and white choice is not allays a good thing. And this is not one of them.

Michael Moore Presents: Planet of the Humans

newtboy says...

Way too long, didn't watch, but I must disagree with the description.
Population control is hardly removed from the debate. IMO it's just ignored when it's brought up because the vast majority of people won't even consider not having children to the point where when China tried to take action and limit couples to one child the world called them draconian monsters instead of intelligent.
I personally often say I think every problem facing humanity and the planet is a function of overpopulation, and I'm not alone. I admit, I'm rare in that I put my money where my mouth is and had a vasectomy in my twenties before having children. I'm of the belief that no other action could possibly have the positive effect that not adding to the population does, but I also bought a full solar system over a decade back and try to grow most of my own food, and I drive well under 5000 miles a year.
There's no reason to abandon population control in favor of technological fixes or vice versa, indeed I believe maximising both won't fully solve our issues that have taken over a century to create, but I also believe not acting in every way possible to mitigate our damages leads to certain doom for most species.
I also think none of this will make a whit of difference in the grand scheme because way too many people have decided making any lifestyle sacrifices or not wastefully living above their means is intolerable even if it means their children suffer for it.

Trump denied it was a problem, just a China hoax, until there were hundreds of infected on our shores, despite being told by every adult to start testing and quarantining months earlier.
Trump removed the CDC officer in China that was there to give the U.S. early warning about exactly this kind of pandemic.
Trump cut CDC funding making them less prepared, which has now cost hundreds of lives and trillions in losses that could have been prevented if this was taken seriously. It could have been stopped from spreading in America if Trump didn't actively ignore the blaring warning sirens for months, or had not instructed his subordinates to do the same.

Trump now says any governor that isn't nice enough to him personally will be abandoned by the federal government with their calls for help going unanswered by the Whitehouse, threatening to just let thousands of American citizens die if governors don't properly kiss his ass and claim it tastes like peaches.

But hey that the lane your in.

Everything You've Ever Seen About Cuba Is A Lie

newtboy says...

Dishonest morons go to Cuba looking for problems and find some. Duh.

Every shortage problem they decry is caused by America's embargo. Gas shortages....because America won't let them import it. Old cars....because America won't allow them to import any new ones. Medicine shortages, no fresh food out of season in cities...
because America won't let them to export anything to be able to afford it, or use credit. No international investments...because America won't allow it. No American tourism (meaning by any American company or subsidiaries, or travel that includes America like cruise ships or international air travel), because America won't allow it. No money, because America won't let them export anything or exploit tourism.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_embargo_against_Cuba

Cuba was doing just fine before we embargoed them into abject poverty for 60+ years. Cuba is doing far better today than they represent.

These are slums and abandoned buildings. Go to Detroit slums, you morons. It's worse, and not because it's communist. Try 5th ward Houston, same thing. Try Florida, plenty of hurricane ravaged ruins there too. American slums don't have communism to dishonestly blame.

Try flying your drone where it's not allowed in America, the cops will be at your door again, and this time you're going to prison, not the embassy, idiots.

And who do they claim is suggesting we convert to communism in America? Probably these morons don't know the difference between communism and socialism and assume their audience doesn't either, or the difference between pure communist socialism and democratic socialism, and don't know America already is a democratic socialist country. Such utter bullshit...it is from turningpoint USA after all.

So sad this is what the right calls informative.

Edit: don't take the above as an endorsement of communism, it's not one. It's a lambasting of dishonest propagandists twisting reality to suit their political narrative.

Trump Turns Our Military Into Mercenaries

newtboy says...

More like selling ass, like he thinks he's a pimp and America is his bottom bitch. He's ok with any degradation of our nation if it makes money. He's incapable of measuring by or even comprehending any other metric.

Speaking of money, how's the deficit? How about the national debt? How much has he increased spending on rehabbing U.S. infrastructure? Where's my (much lower) tax bill on a 3x5" card?
What's the state of our union? It's looking fragile and tattered, so much that his cultists threaten to go to war with America if he's removed, even by losing the election. These are a few ways he's kicking ass for our enemies while abandoning or attacking multiple allies, weakening the U.S. further.

Another red tsunami 2020....just like the last two you predicted when republicans polled much higher and Trump hadn't recently admitted to stealing millions from veterans under oath. Can't wait.

Just pointing out that your stated plan, abandoning all dairy for stuff like almond milk, leads to a water shortage disaster without halting cattle death one whit. It would actually cause exponentially more animal deaths, most by thirst, a far more brutal and painful death than veal get....but you didn't think it through, did you?

There's no question that I enjoy eating meats of many kinds, I've never once hidden or denied that...I would eat long pig if people didn't spoil that meat. That said, I don't eat veal.

....and you say I make everything an argument?! You're style is why people hate vegans. You personally insult them, then whine and get pissy if they contradict your falsehoods and poorly thought out "solutions".

Besides...I thought you quit me. What gives? Enthralled by my swinging cod? Sorry, it's spoken for, and it's too beefy for your taste. ;-)

Edit : btw, the meat industry "hiding" it's methods isn't about the horrific violence at all, it's about hiding the violations of regulations that delineate how they are to be raised, killed, and which can't be used at all. Many smaller producers don't agree with that, they want to be seen doing it right, it's industrial meat production you're complaining about, not all production as you want to claim.

Impeachment Bombshell Ties Trump and Rudy to Ukraine Scheme

newtboy says...

Lol. Oh Bob. I see you didn't get that help you are crying out for.

Schiff isn't the one saying it.
It's the over a dozen Trump administration officials, you know, like the people who gave him a million dollars towards his election campaign to then be installed in his cabinet with zero experience, people that he now calls never trumpers...them, and idiot Trump himself who released a heavily redacted call summary, called it a transcript, and inexplicably left in the parts where he insisted on investigations into political rivals (and no one else) in exchange for releasing congressionally approved aid.

If Trump drained the swamp, it was only to turn it into the world's largest and most ecologically disastrous sewage holding pond.

Great job? On what? Destroying our international standing and standards? There he IS simply the best. Sucking up and capitulating to our enemies while abandoning and distancing our allies? Yep, better than all the rest. Lying to the American people? Better than anyone else. Running a criminal administration for his personal enrichment? No one else could pass the test.

If you call his disastrous work a "great job", what will you call his removal? The best job ever? You are so delusional that just last week you claimed Republicans run the house and Democrats run the Senate so you could blame our badly flawed paperless voting system on those evil Senate Democrats. *facepalm

Wasted billions on 70 miles of new wall.....that's really replacement fence that can be cut through in under a minute with a reciprocating saw, and only where barriers existed. Great. Increased illegal immigration exponentially. Great. Tax cuts/government welfare for the rich but not the needy that exploded the deficit and debt. Great. Failed trade agreements that have cost tens-hundreds of billions only to put us in a far worse position than before he started. Great. Zero investment in infrastructure. Great. Total decimation of environmental laws.
Great. Abandoning our best allies against terrorism to cozy up to dictators. Great. Best of all, he's widened the divide in America more than all administrations in the last 150 years combined, and recently began calling for preparation for civil war if he's not re-elected. Great.

Um...if he's removing deep state operatives, why are they all his people being jailed? More than even any two term administration ever, beating Nixon's indictment and conviction rates in under two years, before the Mueller fallout. Indeed, in that time he has had more than twice the convictions of all Democratic administration officials since 1970....again, before most Mueller convictions. (It bears noting that Republican officials are convicted at a rate >91 times that of Democrats).

What you really meant to say.....No matter what Trump says it is guaranteed to be a lie.

Pallbearer Snub Mitch McConnell At Elijah Cummings' Memorial

newtboy says...

Lol. You think you know his political affiliation....why?

He was not a pallbearer because of his chosen party, but because he was a personal friend of Cummings, who had made many close friends of Republicans thanks to his over abundance of class.

Sadly, republicans cannot stay classy, they abandoned their last vestige of class over a decade ago in a racist fervor over Obama along with their remaining morals and ethics.

The snub was because he blamed McConnell for personally blocking bipartisan legislation Cummings had sponsored, which aimed at ensuring veterans got the benefits they earned...a move Mr Rankin blamed for hastening his brother's death because he couldn't afford to properly fight his disease, multiple myeloma, brought on by drinking tainted drinking water during his military service. It was personal, not political. He shook the house minority leader's hand.

Trump Declares Himself Above the Constitution: A Closer Look

newtboy says...

Saw a nice clip of Grahm, talking about Clinton, saying that Nixon's impeachable offence was ignoring congressional subpoenas.
That is impeachable, and he should be removed with any Republicans who support his stonewalling.

Just a few Senate seats is all it will take to route out these traitors. Nice the Democrats regain control, they need to strengthen congressional rules making it a felony to ignore subpoenas, and instant impeachment to request political favors from foreign powers....even if you say you were joking when you get caught.

Today two major Trump donors and Giuliani cohorts from Florida were arrested for taking over a million dollars in cash from Ukrainian and Russian officials in secret and funneling it to Trump and other Republicans in a scheme going back to at least 2016 when they gave Trump nearly $400000 for his campaign. The Ukrainian donors wanted the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine removed, something Trump actually did for them....quid quo pro.
It won't be a surprise at all to find out the Russians wanted us out of Syria for their recent donations....something Trump just gave them by abandoning our allies and bringing Daesh (ISIS) back from the dead.

Grreta Thunberg's Speech to World Leaders at UN

bcglorf says...

@newtboy,
" Sane policy makers DO assume the absolute worst modeled outcome"

Here we disagree. When you have a high degree of unknowns in your modelling, you don't always just go off the worst case. Let me argue from the extreme to demonstrate that in principle.

If we are looking to mitigate the risk of an extinction level asteroid strike, we don't solely look at the worst case. The worst case is at a minimum assuming another KT extinction level asteroid out there on it's way to us. Space is big enough that it's still possible one is out there undetected on it's way here in our lifetimes. The probability of that may be low, but it's still a worst case not impossible outcome.

With that known worst case, should we bankrupt the global economy building either a defensive capability to detect and destroy/redirect it, or the capability to abandon the planet in our lifetimes because of this worst case risk?

The answer to me is of course not, you must ALSO take into account other variables like the probability of it happening, the unknowns in the equation that prevent us picturing the problem with full accuracy, and other factors.

Could Earth's Heat Solve Our Energy Problems?

newtboy says...

The 1mSv per year is the max the employees at the dump/recycling plant can be exposed to, so leeching more than that into public water systems seems impossible unless I'm missing something. This comes mainly from solid scale deposits removed from the closed loop systems.
Average employees in German plants seemed to get around 3 mSv/yr on their table.

At Fukushima, According to TEPCO records, the average workers’ effective dose over the first 19 months after the accident was about 12 mSv. About 35% of the workforce received total doses of more than 10 mSv over that period, while 0.7% of the workforce received doses of more than 100 mSv.
The 10mSv was the estimated average exposure for those who evacuated immediately, not the area. Because iodine 131 has a half life of 8 days, the local exposure levels dropped rapidly, but because caesium-137 has a half life of 30 years, contaminated areas will be "hot" for quite a while, and are still off limits as I understand it.

Sort of...., most of the area surrounding Chernobyl is just above background levels after major decontamination including removal of all soil, but many areas closer to the plant are still being measured at well above safe levels to this day, and unapproachable, while others may be visited only with monitoring equipment, dose meters, and only for short times. It's not back to background levels everywhere, with measurements up to 336uSv/hr recorded in enclosed areas and abandoned recovery equipment (the claw used to dig at the reactor for instance)....no where near that low at the plant itself. Places like the nearby cemetery which couldn't have the contamination removed still measure higher than maximum occupational limits for adults working with radioactive material. The radiation levels in the worst-hit areas of the reactor building, including the control room, have been estimated at 300Sv/hr, (300,000mSv/hr) providing a fatal dose in just over a minute.
http://www.chernobylgallery.com/chernobyl-disaster/radiation-levels/

Don't get me wrong, I support nuclear power. I just don't believe in pretending it's "safe". That's how Chernobyl happened....overconfidence and irresponsibility. If we consider it unacceptably disastrous if it goes wrong, we might design plants that can't go wrong...The tech exists.

Geothermal try to keep public exposure to less than 1 mSv per year.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/283106142_Natural_radionuclides_in_deep_geothermal_heat_and_power_plants_of_Germany

Living near a Nuclear Power station will get you about 0.00009 mSv/year.

Living in Fukushima will get you about 10 mSv in a lifetime, with life expectancy there at about 84 years that is 0.177 mSv/year.

https://www.who.int/ionizing_radiation/a_e/fukushima/faqs-fukushima/en/

Even Chernobyl is almost entirely background radiation now. Radiation is all scaremongering and misinformation these days, so people freak out about it but it really isn't that dangerous. It takes about 100 mSv a year to have even the slightest statistically detectable health effect and far more than that to actually kill someone.

Why Shell's Marketing is so Disgusting

newtboy says...

Almost as stupid as holding the producers of the toxic product AND the misleading or outright false information about it's hazards blameless. Because they actively misled their customers, I give them the vast lions share of blame, but maybe not 100%. There's plenty to go around.

You don't have to live in poverty to abandon fossil fuels.
Not.
Even.
Close.
I bought solar 10+- years back...it paid for itself in 8. It's lifespan is 20+-. I get 12 years of free electricity for abandoning that portion, with no blackouts, no brownouts, and no rate increases.

True, the video could be better at sharing the blame, but it stayed on topic instead, that topic being major polluters greenwashing their mage. I didn't take it as assigning ALL blame to one source, just not allowing the worst offenders to shirk all responsibility for their products.

Every one of these is the likely outcome of any anthropogenic rise over 2-3C because of feedback loops that drive us to 6-12C rise. Only the wars are likely this century, but I didn't put a timeframe on those outcomes. 140 million + will be displaced by just a 3' rise, which is all but guaranteed by 2100 under the most optimistic current projections.
That wipes out mangroves and other fish nurseries, further impacting the struggling ocean food webs. All the while it accelerates as our ability to cope erodes like the shorelines....it doesn't just halt at 3' rise.
The natural food webs on land are also struggling, and are unlikely to survive ocean collapse.

Not just from deforestation, but diatoms are near a point of collapse from ocean acidification. https://diatoms.org/what-are-diatoms. That's over 1/2....and the base of the ocean food web.

Since the IPCC (again, known for overly conservative estimates) now says at current rates we could hit as much as a 6C rise by 2100, and rates of emissions are rising as fast as carbon sinks are shrinking, they're not just a possibility, they a likelihood in the near future....but granted the hydrogen sulfide clouds are far in a worst case scenario future, far from guaranteed.

bcglorf said:

@newtboy,

Walking backwards to simplify, my main point is that simply blaming ALL fossil fuel usage on the company providing the fossil fuel is stupid and misleading in the extreme. We don't see millions of people willingly abandoning fossil fuels and living in abject poverty to save the world, instead they are all very willing and eagerly buying them and this video lets all those people off the hook. This video lets everybody keep using fossil fuels, and at the same time pointing the finger at Shell and saying it's all their fault. It's an extremely detrimental piece of disinformation.

"explain what, specifically, I claimed that's not supported by the science."
-Complete collapse of the food web
-Wars over hundreds of millions or billions of refugees
-Loss of most farm land and hundreds of major cities to the sea
-Loss of well over 1/2 the producers of O2
-Eventual clouds of hydrogen sulfide from the ocean covering the land
-Runaway greenhouse cycles making the planet uninhabitable for thousands if not hundreds of thousands or even millions of years
