How to pull cat from snowbank

Trancecoach says...

eff that.. mice are still on dialup.

Cheese.>> ^kymbos:

Since when did mice get wifi?!? We have to do something!>> ^Praetor:
"clearly the cat was distressed. taking pleasure at watching innocent animals suffer is intolerable."
I think every mouse in existence is staring at you speechless right now.

Mike Daisey - Kill The Corporation!

Ridiculously Big Teahupoo Wave Surfing in Super Slow-Motion

notarobot says...

Crud, you're both right! I must have misread the submission time in the first place, and got distracted by siftbot ignoring my commends. Mybad. >> ^geo321:

It's the other way around. We duped the wrong vid>> ^notarobot:
Ahck I'm bad at this.

>> ^dvst8download:

The one I posted was the original (with M83 soundtrack) from Vimeo, which was taken off Vimeo within a couple hours (killing my submission). I've been traveling with limited wifi access, and while I've been offline, someone else posted the above embed as a backup. For the record, this music track is bullshit, it's NOT a backup of the video I originally posted.
Meanwhile, someone else found a copy of the original on another host, and posted that as an original submission. And then mine was quickly flagged as the dupe (Heysu Christo, this is convoluted). Anyway, it's irrelevant now. I'd delete this one, but I don't know how... Can someone that has the appropriate permissions kill it, or flag it as dead? kthxbai

Sorry @dvst8download, it's a great find.

Samsung Galaxy 10.1 vs iPad 2 (Geek Talk Post)

gwiz665 says...

I done been hearing rumors that Siri is coming to the iPhone 4, but this is doubtful as there is a hardware limitation there - a significantly slower processor. Other than that, yea, lots of these things are business decisions rather than technical limitations. Remember when apple blocked the app that made the Volume button into a shortcut to take pictures - and then after a while released a new version of the camera software that had the feature in it. Lots of things like that happen too.
>> ^dag:

It's not about technical limitations. It's product alignment and yes, cynically, selling more iPhone 4s's. But even taking out the cynical bit - Siri does make more sense on the iPhone than an iPad. Much of Siri relies on GPS which is not built in to the iPad WiFI version. Siri also needs you to be online all the time to work- whereas the iPad is not. For these reasons and a few more - Siri on the iPad would not be an optimal experience- and if it's not optimal - Apple doesn't do it.
The real question is why isn't Siri on the 4 or even the 3GS? I'm afraid that's mostly about the Benjamins.

>> ^gwiz665:
The iPad 2 has identical hardware to iPhone 4S, then only differences is that 4S is downclocked to 800 MHz (from 1 GHz) and that it obviously has a different resolution. It could pull off Siri easily I would wager (unless it has some sort of extra gadget inside especially for it, which is doubtful).

As an iOS and Android developer, I recommend the iPad 2. From a user standpoint is has better apps and, at least to me, the interface "feels" better. In fairness though, I have not worked directly with the Galaxy 10.1, so I don't know too much about the performance of that. The iPad 2 is a beast and can pull off quite a bit of stuff though.
With dropbox on it, it becomes a lot more useful for work stuff, since you can easily move files on and off.
Siri is not available on the iPad 2, yet, at least. And nothing has been announced, so this should be kept in mind when purchasing, if Siri is a wanted feature.
There are apps that can interact from iPhone to iPad, and you can tether the iPad to use the iPhone as a hotspot, which can be nice.

I'm quite surprised siri isn't on the ipad 2... but i'd assumed it had the hardware for it.
Soooo it's apple, there's only gonna be one of two reasons - either it doesn't have the hardware (gwizz will know) or they're releasing a new ipad soonish and want to have a selling point. I'd recommend looking at estimated release rumours for a new ipad, might play into your decision.

Next Gen. Color E-Ink, and E-Ink Explained!

Payback says...

>> ^ZappaDanMan:

Yeah I like my kindle, I destroy books with that device. There have been rumors that amazon has turned there back on e-ink, and the kindle 4 will be a tablet.

I decided to go with the wifi only as downloading a book (what, 5-6 hours of enjoyment) can be done in like 20 seconds, and the extra money for the 3G means that many fewer books for the price. The response time and controls are retarded for web content, and free wifi is ubiquitous, so I just couldn't get myself to pay for it.

The "aPad" tablet on the other hand... sub $350 allegedly? includes worldwide 3G? I'll be first in line if I have to kill someone to do it.

Don't Trust Your Hotel Room Safe

Skeeve says...

It's like a secured wifi connection that's using the default manufacturer's password: the hotel is supposed to change them so that there is a master password (in case guests lock themselves out of the safe) but this hotel (and likely many others) was just too lazy to change all the master passwords of all the room safes.

Thankfully, if you put things in the safe and they are stolen the likely thief is a staff member with access to your room - kind of narrows down the list of suspects.

Francis takes exception to Diablo 3

RFlagg says...

Based on other videos of his I've seen before, yes, parody and people are taking him way too serious. Of course he is going to buy it and play it. He normally points out the issue then goes "What am I supposed to do..." and gives the solution to the problem, pointing out people are over reacting. He seemed to have missed that part in this "rant" but he was still in character.
The requirement for an Internet connection while playing single player is an issue for those who don't have reliable Internet connections. Steam requires an Internet connection as well, but at least it will still work offline. What if you do play on your laptop and you are at a location that doesn't have WiFi? No Diablo 3 for you then. There seems to be little reason not to just sync once a connection is available and still allow offline play. Yes, most of us will still buy it, but I don't like being limited that way. Now I am guessing the license follows the user, not the PC, like WoW, so while it does in theory limit my portable options, for the most part I probably won't care.
The bigger issue I have is the ability to buy things with real money. This gives an unfair advantage to those who have more money to burn. Of course WoW has a the same issue with people buying gold off the black market, but you have to step well outside the system and take huge risks doing so. Here it is now supported in game. The question of course is how many more people will use that method than would have had it been black market? Even I could buy stuff in WoW for cash I wouldn't, seems to ruin the game to me, but then I don't raid.

@Issykitty - HOW DARE YOU INSULT THIS MEETING OF GREAT MINDS!

FYI - I like when I write a thoughtful comment and it gets downvoted by the people I'm arguing with, especially when they aren't able to come up with any kind of worthwhile response. I take it as a sign of weakness. Very cool.

Also, I'm not pissed at anyone, Prozac, Camp or Blanco. I'm just - as always - up for some lively discussion and not afraid to be brutally honest. At the risk of further offending the klansmen in the room, I think conservatives also intertwine politics with emotions and personality more so than liberals, and thus end up getting mad and thinking everyone else is mad too. Who knows? I'm limited to my own SUBJECTIVE REALITY.

@campiondelmenudo - I know your sn is Italian and possibly a soccer reference, but thanks for the tip all the same. I can stop mocking your screename if it bugs you. Your screename just begs out for mockery IMO. Feel free to return the favor if you like. FalopianSutureTooGay is probably the route I'd go if I wanted to mock my own screename.

Honestly, this 'discussion' is pretty lightweight stuff. I probably wouldn't even be slumming here at the bottom of this dumb thread if I hadn't been suffering from an unfortunate lack of wifi.

QR Code Craziness. Koreans using it to do grocery shopping

legacy0100 says...

I am not sure why TESCO, a UK based company, is trying so hard to cut into the South Korean market. Wal-Mart Korea was competed out by E-Mart in 2006. Whatever the reason, they sure are giving their competition a run for their money.

This is possible only because South Korea has the infrastructure already built in where every underground subway is laden with phone and free wifi signals. American cities have far outdated infrastructure and shortage of funding. I doubt this will happen in our subway stations any time soon. But I do see a possibility for bus stations.
