Storm Surge Like You've Never Experienced it Before

Man... BBC's The Bodyguard clips are tame by comparison. US TV... everything must be SENSATIONAL!!! FEAR FEAR FEAR! ... even the weather. Yes, Florence is dangerous, big and wet, but come on... focus!

Two Decades of Memes: All Your Base

"North Carolina State University students hack a local news weather ticker..."

Uh, no. I have an archive of this and what had happened was their news submission web page was not vetted at all. Anything you submitted was live on the next display cycle. Once that was discovered, of course the students spammed the hell out of it.

It is not hacking if the site has no security.

Melania At Child Prisons Wears"I Don't Really Care, Do You?"

PlayhousePals says...

Despite her spokesperson telling reporters there was 'no hidden message', I don't believe that for a second. She didn't wear it at the inspection/visit but, after finding out it had become a 'bit of a flap', put it back on after landing in DC where it was 85 and humid [not exactly jacket weather]. Seems like an F.U. to the Orange Don to me ... only Melania knows for sure.

Sorry, but in #3 when it changed from overcast to sunny in a split second, that's just Irish weather. Even if it were alternating between them shot-for-shot for 5 minutes I need zero suspension of disbelief.

Spacer Installation on 765,000 volt line

observer144 says...

I'm surprised that the line does not have a weather coating. It looks like just steel cables. Or maybe that is the protection and the actual electrical conduit is inside, but the outer surface sure looked energized.

I guess I expected a plastic or rubber coating.

Flooding, in particular, could also be a symptom of poor drainage due to urban development as much as climate change. Possible more-so tbh.

We have better evidence of a warming climate, and indeed that it's our fault without needing to point to, err, the weather. Still, record breaking weather is what we expect from a warming cllimate, because, you know, when things change stuff happens that didn't happen so much before.

Is it possible that we have missed important signs of global warming wherever it has caused local weather to be uncharacteristically mild and pleasant for extended periods of time?

It actually takes three of these events in close succession to make any claim that orthodox thousand year periods were violated. Perhaps it took a thousand years to wait for the first one, and now it will not happen for another thousand years again. Who knows.

To clarify a Thousand Year Storm isn't only going to happen once in a thousand years. There is always a probability that it can happen. Some of this could easily be 'bad luck'.

The phenomenon that created this situation is known as cell training, and happens all over the place. However, it is worthwhile noting what else they say, "...scientific studies have shown a statistically meaningful uptick in the frequency of extreme rain events over the eastern United States. Statistically, over the long term, these types of extreme floods are probably becoming more common, in areas that are normally rainy as a result of global warming."

What this means, at least the way I understand it, is that statistically in this region we can expect a higher probability of these 'xxx year storms' every time conditions are favorable for cell training style weather.

We can expect more of these types of storms, simply because the climate is in a format that creates more ideal conditions. These ideal conditions are not limited to just this type of weather, either. Gulf hurricanes, tornado alley tornadoes, and other 'regional' weather patterns are also experiencing 'ideal' conditions to allow stronger, more damaging storms to develop.

The comments in this thread is a perfect example of people not doing their own research and just believing everything they read or hear. attach a striking video or image to a comment stating some viewpoint/reason and 3 out of 4 in this case will eat it up as truth without thinking for themselves.

I think title and description may be wrong

"The 2016 Ellicott City cloudburst was deemed* a “thousand-year rain event” in terms of the probability of recurrence. That an event of this magnitude unfolded in the same spot, two years later, is what it is"

Please correct me if i'm wrong on this.

Spacer Installation on 765,000 volt line

jmd says...

that kind of work amazes me. I'm sure they need to fly in perfect weather but the pilot needs to keep it steady and even lowers himself closer to the wire when he needs to get to the far underside clamp. And I am sure it is second nature by now but if you mess up on the needle and clamp then its either you or the helicopter who gets the zap and neither one will work right after.
