Crazy couple takes their relationship to new heights

Stephen Fry Confesses 2012 Suicide Attempt

artician says...

It sounds like you're in the medical profession and know your stuff. I wanted to respond to this comment though because it makes perfect sense from the medical industries point of view. I understand why it would be common sense to classify such behavior as an illness, and I understand why that is the standard perspective, but I think chingalera's point, and one I agree with on several levels, was that it might not be (an illness).

You (I'm assuming) belong to an institution that has the authority on the definition, so today we live with the perspective that people with different forms of mental process have a disability because that "illness" does not allow them to function painlessly within modern society. It's a disruptive abnormality that needs attention and proactive care to correct.

Now, you could also very easily make the point that modern society is the construct, the abnormal element, and similar to what other people are saying already, the mental illness is a coping mechanism, or an "evolution", or a side effect of being conformed to this way of life that very, possibly, maybe, is not healthy or a natural state of existence for our current arrangement of biological systems.

Without getting into a multitude of specifics, when I look at it that way and all the issues we have in our lives, the Human Condition's complete lack of forward progress despite our civil growth, and also consider the fact that I, you, and everyone we know, spend the vast majority of their waking life dedicated to actions that other people tell us we must undertake under penalty of violence or imprisonment, I don't think it's an illness.

I agree that it's very unhealthy to live in that state, but I think it is strongly disputable between the cause manifesting itself internally to the individual, or within the environment they inhabit.

Illness is hardly the next step in evolution or human adaptation.

Would you say the same thing about cancer or heart disease due to a genetic predisposition in one's family genetics (removing the factor of personal choices that would lead to such diseases, like smoking or poor diet)?

Octopus Project - I Saw the Bright Shinies

Vimeo description:

Animated by Austin illustrator Divya Srinivasan, this animated video depicts three sleepy ghost kids following a heterochromic fox through a snowy twilight. When the group discovers an impromptu critter disco in a forest clearing, the spirits and strays dance in harmony until a cranky babushka bemoans the noise and breaks up the party. Thus, the spectral youths return to the astral plane... but not without a final farewell to their new found animal friends.

Divya Srinivasan has previously created animated videos for Spoon ("Everything Hits at Once"), They Might Be Giants, The Sundance Channel and Wonder Showzen, and worked on Richard Linklater's "Waking Life" feature film. Divya's illustration portfolio includes numerous pieces for the New Yorker magazine, as well as the album artwork for Sufjan Stevens' Illinois and This American Life's "Stories of Hope and Fear" collection.

"I Saw The Bright Shinies" is from The Octopus Project's album "Hello, Avalanche," released in 2007 on Peek-A-Boo Records. The "Bright Shinies" video appears on the "Golden Beds" enhanced CD EP released in 2009 on Peek-A-Boo Records.

Inception Explained Via Folders

westy says...

>> ^SveNitoR:

I never understood why some people had problems understanding Inception. Still I agree that it is a clever way of showing how simple the structure of the plot is.

I think you have different groups of people not understanding it or uinderstanding it for different reasoins and then they all got mixed to gether and people started saying ITS A COMPLICATED FILM , when realy its not a complex film .

the film does suffer from terrible dialog and completely mashed up editing ( arguably the editing is to convey the nature of the dreams) the film also brakes the a rule it makes up and draws attention to ( the been knocked and woken up from a jolt)

Personally i don't think its a "bad" film i just didn't enjoy it at all , The main character played by Leonardo decapreo was a total selfish prick and i think with all the stuff about him and his wife and kids you are ment to identify and ruite for him in some way , but i thought he was a tosser so had no stake in what happend to him or his retarded love.

I can see how his romance and the story of him and his wife ties into the dreem aspect and the stuff of maby he is still in a dreem and she was trying to save him but i just didn't care.

Not that this film is like the matrix , but when u have a film thats premise is more philosophical or abstract than your standard film then you need strong characters and strong doilog to keep it interesting.

also to me all the special effects scenes felt realy canned/contrived and totaly broke the emersoin of the film for me. where as again in matrix 1 i didn't feal like i was watching a demo real for a car advertising company. ( again im not saying this film was like or shud have been like matrix 1)

The film is one big waisted potential if u took the inception idea had better plot and matue philosophical doilog it would have been way better.

im onyl bitter because i normaly like this sort of film , waking life ( i think thats its name) matrix , Existanze , cube .

come to think of it its like vanilla sky where it could have been good but was ruined by plot elements and annoying characters and bad script.

You Tube Video from Alleged Gunman in Giffords' Shooting

JiggaJonson says...

A self-destructive man feels completely alienated, utterly alone. He's an outsider to the human community. He thinks to himself, "I must be insane." What he fails to realize is that society has, just as he does, a vested interest in considerable losses and catastrophes.

"I feel that the time has come to project my own inadequacies and dissatisfactions into the sociopolitical and scientific schemes, let my own lack of a voice be heard."

Yeah, it gets a little boring sometimes, Enoch, but what doesn't? The place is what you make of it for the most part. Lots of people, including me have their complaints and things they'd like to change. Still I'm fairly convinced it's the Best Little Town on the Internet as far as community goes. I'm still convinced that the work we do here is pretty groundbreaking for how communities organize themselves on the Web. I haven't hung out in many forums, but VideoSift seems to me to have more user empowerment and self-moderation than any I've seen. Dag and Lucky keep a very loose hand on the reins. Things often run amuck because of it, but we learn a lot when that happens.

So don't say goodbye, say "see ya later", and take a break. Come back and post some videos because I appreciate you're unique perspective and it adds to the diversity of thought, even if you think no one appreciates it. Keep in mind that there are thousands of unregistered users reading what you write. Your voice is important.

Send along some of your prose, but be forewarned that I am a ruthlessly constructive critic. I'd say that a full 80% of my waking life is spent in creative pursuits, and the process is very sacred to me.

Anyway, see ya later. I find two weeks is all it takes to make me miss the Sift.

this place is beginning to bore me.yet i find myself reticent to leave my fave fuzzy friend who wears the funny hats.anarchist ministers are not welcome here, that has become painfully obvious.

maybe there was a point in time where stirring things up and helping people perceive things from a different view brought a twinkle to my eye,bit now it just bores me.
nobody is interested in anything different, just the same regurgitated crap.
its like watching one big group circle jerk.
some great people,just...boring.

ill still post some videos.i know some will appreciate them, but i dont feel any urge to participate in giving free reach-arounds.
i been spending much of my time writing anyways, and i have been having a pretty good discussion with iamtheblurr.he seems a decent sort.
if you are interested i can throw ya a link to some of my material.its not half bad,for a hack like me.
keep fighting the good fight brother, you a cool cat.
stay cool brother..stay cool.

X cannot declared this a dupe of the specified video because X submitted the original - ignoring dupeof request by X.

Because really, how can the original submitter know if the video is a dupe? let alone if the original was submitted long ago and the original submitter knows exactly the link and will spot the dupe instantly and with the most certainty. That and counting the fact the dupe command will not work if the video called in question is actually not the dupe but the older post. How dare that original submitter logically invokes the dupe command?

Stupidest restriction sifbot has ever uttered.
