I wonder how Paul Verhoeven is feeling right now..

Well, if it turns out to be a smart film (not getting up my hopes here), we might get a man vs. machine / free will vs. programming story which would be nice and an acceptable change from Jesus identity crisis Verhoeven did. However, nowadays action movies tend to be less smart if not done by Nolan.
And while I can dig black Robocop, I don't like the suit like look. Dude just seems to wear a helmet, 80's Robocop's face was attached onto a robotic head. Rob Bottin FTW!

I think the reason the original was actually one of the better Dick adaptations was Paul Verhoeven. Notorious pervert, yes, but the man can direct.

Also in the spirit of this, I popped Big Trouble In Little China in expecting the greatest commentary on the greatest movie of all time and was completely, utterly disappointed. Kurt Russel at one point is telling John Carpenter about how his son plays hockey.

I remember reading how Paul Verhoeven wanted to have an erect penis in Basic Instinct but this was one of the MPAAs big no-nos. This was also mentioned in the IFC documentary Indie Sex by other directors facing the same problems.

You should, it is classic science fiction in it's purest form. The troopers actually use these armored battle suits (WAAAAAAAAAAY before Manga got a hold of them) where they "jump" into a target area from miles away, drop a pocket nuke, then jump away just before it blows. The movie was a complete cock-up.

Yeah, in a number of ways it does read that way, which is how I originally took it... but then you look at the character of Johnny Rico, and it shows that he becomes 'all he can be' via joining the military, and it glorifies the 'grunts'.

The whole final act is showing how Johnny comes into his own and becomes the teacher that taught him. And also that the military was indeed who 'saved the universe'.

I still enjoy it... but being that I detest the insane amount of money that is spent on militaries around the world, it just annoys that it really could be used as a recruitment video for the army.

Verhoeven is a real hit and miss director for me. Robocop was an out of the ballpark classic homerun. No doubt there. Total Recall less so, but still a damn awesome film (Quaaaaaid).

One thing that does not associate instantly with the talented filmmaker in my own mind, however, is Jesus Christ. And yet that's exactly who is the subject of Verhoeven's new book, "Jesus of Nazareth." I had a film professor who sounded EXACTLY like Paul Verhoeven. If you closed your eyes, you really couldn't tell the difference. It was awesome.
