Pete Holmes Interviews UFC Champ Ronda Rousey

lucky760 says...

Agreed. I don't hate Pete, but his annoying personality is not my cup of tea. (Although, admittedly, I did laugh at him a little in this video.)

Ronda's an awesome fighter and has an ethic I respect. I liked her in The Ultimate Fighter, despite that many people now hate her after that.

UFC 168 was her best fight. Unfortunate how unexpectedly and abrubtly UFC 170 against Sara McMann ended. Definitely looking forward to her next fight. I hope she learns to block and dodge punches. She's doing great with her stand-up considering she's a judo practitioner, but she's taken quite a few head blows in those last two fights. If she doesn't start defending herself from those, one of them is going to knock her out.

What Systema looks like once you've reached a certain level

ChaosEngine says...

I can't really speak for Systema, and there are certainly some people in aikido who focus on mystic nonsense.

But the base underlying principles are sound. I've been taken apart by a 73 year old man literally half my size. I've also trained with other people in various jujutsus, and both of us have found something to learn from the other.

I don't really think it's self-deception. Maybe for some people, it is, but I'm under no illusion about how well I'd do against one of the UFC guys.

Besides, people seem to think that Aikido practitioners are somehow restricted to the demonstrated techniques. IMO, those are merely teaching aids, the "finger pointing at the stars", if you like

Ultimately, debating martial arts on the internet is even more pointless than debating with creationists. You really need to experience each art to understand it. If it isn't for you, that's fine; find something else that is.

It is true that MMA is not the be-all end-all of martial arts, and in fact "two persons of equivalent weight competing willingly on neutral ground" is quite far removed from "actual trouble" (key words: "two", "willingly").

That being said, two things:
1) There have been 'no-hold-barred' fights / underground duels recorded since at least the 1920s, some of them very violent and bone-splitting (famously: Kimura Vs Gracie), and 'soft' aikido-style systems never won anything.

2) More importantly, systema does claim a number of things, including being a martial art in the military sense, and being the product of an elite military force, to which it was reserved (i.e. it was secret). It also claims to have semi-mystical roots dating from the middle ages, and bonker stuff like 'paralyzing soft punch' and 'healing punch' (this is claimed by its actual founder - you can look it up). Of course none of those claims have been substantiated.

So systema is either:
- An elite martial art with Fist-Of-The-North-Star like powers, yet no one heard of it before or beside (not pre-USSR historians, not recognized Russian martial artists, and not actual Russian elite military officers), and was/is super-secret, yet can be somehow taught to anyone.

Or:
- Stuff made up by two guys out of the army.

You decide.

If your goal is "studying" and "bettering yourself", shouldn't that involve something that's honest with its claims?

I agree with Velocity5, it is, indeed, self-deception.

What Systema looks like once you've reached a certain level

toferyu says...

Yup, I should of known it was going to go this way.

This post wasn't to say Systema = superior MA.
Evidently if you're counting on competing in the octagon you're going to go with grappling/BJJ + Kick-boxing/MuayThai etc. but the UFC & Co are a very small part of life.

That being said, having practiced a similar art to Systema, I can guarantee that when you train with an experienced and balanced partner there's no compliance if you're serious about your training. It's actually a team work where you point out your opponent's openings and mistakes and gradually go faster and harder. And then there's a limit to what you can spar without risking serious injury : that's when you slow it down.

In the end, again, it's about what works for you and what you need as a person in your private and/or professional life.

Girl takes dude down and makes him tap out!

ChaosEngine says...

I agree that saying things like "wow, that's pretty good for a girl" is the height of ignorance.

OTOH, size is never irrelevant. Sorry, but between two evenly skilled fighters, the bigger one wins. Why do you think they have weight classes in UFC?

While someone with good technique can absolutely defeat someone bigger/stronger than them, you're fooling yourself if you think it's irrelevant.

And for the record, I train with women in martial arts pretty much daily. I know plenty that are half my size, but with excellent technique. Gender doesn't and shouldn't matter on the mat.

They tied up and fell over together, it's not even like she shot a power double on him. If she had, being heavier only goes so far, especially when he has no idea how to defend. As for the RNC and the tap, size is irrelevant.

What we really have here is someone with some jiujitsu fundamentals submitting someone with no idea how to defend themselves.

I think it's awesome when women train in martial arts, but I also think it's ignorant to act surprised when they are good at it.

Gracie Breakdown of Ronda Rousey Armbar vs. Miesha Tate 1

lucky760 says...

Isn't it fascinating how much technique and consideration goes into what seems like just some random little maneuver?

Makes you look at a fight differently and really appreciate an expert pugilist like Rousey. I don't think it'd be an exaggeration to say she is the most skilled female grappler in MMA and that she's also more skilled than many (or most) male grapplers. (There's a reason they made her start competing with men when she was in Judo.)

As @xxovercastxx hinted, you should really check out her second fight with Tate in UFC 168. It was phenomenally impressive. (I've watched and re-watched it half a dozen times.)

I just wonder how she'll fair against Sara McMann in February. She's an undefeated beast.

Disregard my original comment.

My confusion was that I kept thinking about UFC 168 and not the fight discussed in this video.

I'll leave UFC and Strikeforce in the tags.

I know this is presented by UFC, but the fight was in Strikeforce, so I swapped the tag as I felt that was more valuable. Hope that's cool.

The rematch was awesome. Ronda's judo throws from the sprawl were crazy. Also, I was relieved to not see another gruesome dislocation. Of course, ended up watching Anderson snap his tibia in half instead. Ugh.

MMA fighter flips out when he sees his EA video game stats

I thought this was posted on here before... Either way, the entire thing is faked. They needed something viral to go up against the Undisputed UFC game which beat them to market by a year.

The greatest MMA staredown of all time

artician says...

That's actually Dana White, the current president of UFC.

I don't think there's anything wrong, un-alpha, or to be ashamed of when showing respect to an opponent. Only those who know they're not have to do that stupid little dance.
