Sulfur Mound Fire

But vertically, we could see the whole scope of the fire twisters.

Clearly Satan made them film this vertically, because it would have made much more sense to film it horizontally based on the spread out nature of the fire.

Driving home through the storm

kceaton1 says...

I drove right under the core of this thing going home. I could actually see a tornado being made and I checked all the weather and News outlets and there was nothing, except that NOAA decided to throw a Severe Thunderstorm Warning 10 minutes up AFTER IT PASSED...

It was so crazy to see a tornadic supercell in West Valley City (Salty Lake City, for most Sifters). It was following 2700 West for a bit and then I-215 (nearing the airport) was moving super fast to the NNE, straight to Washington Terrace and Riverdale. The winds were wild and the cloud formations were awesome, they were moving fast enough that I thought a partial nub might be visible where I was at, but I never did see it.

All that I saw was the main vortex with the amazing sight of all the cold air being sucked into the vortex at the SSW corner of the leading edge. Which was twisting more than fast enough to be a "horizontal twister". It was rotating so fast it was amazing; since you could see that sight you knew all it needed was a bit of air to push against it from underneath and stand up some of those vortices around the central core and then, walla, you'd get the tornado (I actually did believe that Ogden or Bountiful would get one since that was where it was heading).

All it needed was to get a little closer to the mountains and you'd have the right ingredients.

Thus, this is what you see happen right here in this video. North of my house, out in the middle of the Great Salt Lake, sits Antelope Island. It got hit by the raining part of this tornadic system but look at this wonderful storm video from it:

It even had some golf ball hail in it.

I heard it as the twister ran out of gas (i.e. dissipated).

Did the one guy say, "I'm about to run out of gas"? So let's see: driving towards a powerful tornado with your head out the window while debris is whipping around and you're running low on gas so you can't get out of the way if it turns on you or an injury requires you to book it to a hospital. Seems totally safe to me!

With that said, that is some awesome footage and one of the few tornado videos where the "stormchasers" aren't either crying, swearing, or screaming. I might actually be able to show this to my kid with sound for once!

I think you're not getting the distances correct. At 1:42 they're about a quarter mile off, look at the buildings to the right and the telephone poles. When you can finally see the heavy equipment trailer blocking the road, again, at least a quarter mile.

Prairies are difficult to guess distance at the best of times, let alone through video, and that twister is so out of the ordinary as to be completely useless for distance measurement. At one point it almost looks like it's hovering 10ft off the road, but it's illusory and much farther away.

I really don't think 50 ft from what looks to be at least an F3 is "safe distance", but that's just, like, my opinion, man. ;-)
I really hope the rental car insurance doesn't cover driving into a tornado. In Iceland, rental car companies offer a separate coverage for wind damage (hail, sand, debris, etc) but it's NOT covered with just the basic insurance normally offered.

As a party game, it's better than Twister, at least if you're into groping.

Anyways, if I remember correctly, this is the way to undo the mess:

One hand above your partner's rope, the other below. Grab his/her rope with your lower hand and push it through the loop on your upper wrist from below, then pull it across your hand and you should be free.

What are they using as an accelerant? It's got to be some heavy fuel with little fumes.

Something pretty oily-Takes the flame a while to start. I'm thinking kerosene-the fumes are a non-issue if the thing is vented at the top to outside, and once fuel oil is going it's hard to blow out.
