If Quake was developed today...

RutherfordWilson says...

Those consoles turn kids into morons. Growing up playing console games prepares kids to the world of Idiocracy and cash registers with pictures of hamburgers instead of numbers.

The worst thing is that the industry is starting to to dumb down MMO's to the console crowds level.

It's really sad. The worst part is these kids have no idea what they are missing.

I really hate the ingame hints. It totally breaks the immersion. It used to be an option you could toggle, but now it is just there even when you don't want/need it.

Don't even get me started on the whole console controller thing. The idea of steering a 200mph car or 600mph plane with two buttons is so utterly stupid, it makes my skin crawl. Oh but little Tommy is too wasted to or lacks the attention span to aquire and set up a decent six axis jobstick, wah, wah, wah, QQ.

Tommy Chong Confronts "War on Drugs" Profiteer

Tommy's inability to let the other guy speak doesn't really strengthen his position at all. The other guy shut up for him, but Chong can't get his emotional outburst under control. He NEEDS marijuana. It made him what he is today.

He's a fucking hypocrite too, calling the suit out on the fact that he's making money doing whatever it is he does. TOMMY: YOU GOT RICH OFF IT TOO. You would be NO ONE without your addiction. Just another washed up, unmotivated pothead. Time to let the smoke clear long enough to look in the mirror, buddy.

What a fucking tool. Marijuana addiction? addiction?
Y'all know that SB1070 was written by Corrections Corporation of America, right? Y'all know why? Because undocumented people are seen as a source of profit ($200 per bed, per night). Same thing goes for the 'war on drugs'. Its a way for the capitalist scum to profit off our misery.
Fuck 'em

So the brain can't become addicted to the chemical reactions it receives from THC? Is that what you're saying? Why is it so far-fetched to you that marijuana is very much an addictive substance? It may not be as addictive as some other things such as methamphetamines but it most certainly is addictive. ANYTHING can be addictive if the brain sees a reward from it. Gaming, extreme sports, drugs, alcohol, even reading can be addictive. Weed IS addictive and denying that fact is only keeping yourself in the dark.

Of COURSE people make money off of it. What don't people try to capitalize on? That doesn't make it any less true that it's an affliction for many people.

WTF, potent marijuana? WTH does that even mean? It isn't a fucken chemical, its a fucken plant, idiot.

It means the Ratio of Psychoactive components to plant matter are higher now than they where fifty years ago, which is very much true for a lot of strains. This has been done by breeders through different methods combining different strains and only using the ones that held the result you where looking for.

The potency argument is idiotic because you do not smoke cannabis until you cannot function you smoke it to get the desired effect on the body and stop. So what this means is that your Cannabis will last longer and you inherently smoke less at a time because you are getting a bigger bang for your buck. Smoke the same amount of Mexican ditch weed and a higher potent "sour diesel" strain or the like, and you may "green out " ( as some people who smoke too much puke/get sick) but you will not die.

On the other hand, drink 355 ml of grain alcohol in one shot, as compared to a 355 ml beer and you could die of alcohol poisoning. The potency angle is just completely fallible.

Or where you being facetious ?

Edit- Tobacco leaf is just a plant as well but you can die from handling that with just your bare hands, as well Cannabis' main ingredients are chemicals, just as Nicotine is and pretty well everything else thats mind altering. Just because its a plant does not mean the chemicals it produces can not harm you.

Erm, sorry DerHasisttot, I did not mean to imply something incorrect. I meant that they are yet teenagers, but when they become teenagers, then I would have to stone them, lol

But somethings are harder when they are young then when they are older. Right now my daughter told me how much she likes her uncle Tommy and how she thought I lost his dog. It is hard not to pass my hatred of the man I know as my brother, but I just told her, "That's great that you don't hate anyone, even if they have been mean you should never hate."

Oh gawd I wanted to puke. But that's the punishment a good father must go through.

And don't get me wrong; it will come. Hopefully, they will be exactly as I envision them as teenagers, half themselves, half my morality--sans the hatred I hold to myself.

And besides, I have already installed 50 murder holes in my house for unwanted guests, and hired a few African Warlords to help control the unexpected.

In reply to this comment by DerHasisttot:
I take my hat off to you, sir. Three teenage daughters sounds like you are a man who has seen hell and thought: "Meh. You gotta do better to scare me."

Morality is selective. I would believe in the bible except I would have to stone all three of my teenage daughters by their teenage years; and I don't want to do that.

Alan Turing - My Favourite Scientist

Seric says...

A little background for those who are interested.

During the beginnings of WW2 the Polish saw that the Germans were amassing armies of some magnitude and were certain that they couldn't hope to fight them. So they worked on cracking the codes that the Germans were using for communication. This was a fantastic piece of mathematics and was eventually put into practice via a machine called the Bomba.

The poles handed a copy of their findings to the British intelligence through a man called Knox, who would eventually become Turing's superior at Bletchley Park. It was later found out that Knox was also a homosexual, despite being married.

The enigma machine was altered after the Bomba was made, Turing analysed the code and mathematics and created a machine known as the Bombe. This was capable of cracking the enigma code by looking for contradictions.

This machine was later re-invented as The Colossus machines by a gifted engineer, Tommy Flowers. These machines were capable of cracking an enigma message in roughly 10 minutes. By the end of the war, the British were cracking the broadcasted Enigma coded messages before the Germans could themselves as they decoded messages manually using the enigma machine.

In 1945, Turing was awarded the OBE for his wartime services. He committed suicide in 1954, although this is disputed, especially by his mother.

In 2009 as the result of a petition, a government apology was issued by Gordon Brown for the way Turing had been treated.

"Thousands of people have come together to demand justice for Alan Turing and recognition of the appalling way he was treated. While Turing was dealt with under the law of the time and we can't put the clock back, his treatment was of course utterly unfair and I am pleased to have the chance to say how deeply sorry I and we all are for what happened to him ... So on behalf of the British government, and all those who live freely thanks to Alan's work I am very proud to say: we're sorry, you deserved so much better."

I've had the chance to learn a lot about Bletchley park in my studies of computing history, and what a remarkable man Turing was.

A personal hero of mine too. *promote
