Jasper, a pet skunk, crying to be picked up.

I'm very confused by the person holding the camera. She has tiny baby feet that look like they belong to a child, but they're also tattooed (and with skulls and crossbones nonetheless) so they look like they belong to an adult.

Exploring Korea's Illegal Tattooing Scene

00Scud00 says...

I seem to recall the first guy she interviewed said that Korea didn't have a tattoo culture before this. So it's being created and defined by the youth of the 21st century, with ample access to western culture, and besides, western themes probably piss their parents off even more.
There was also a lot of ink on some of those people and we could have easily missed something due to the short amount of time or our lack of knowledge of Korean culture.

@Asmo
I'm not sure how she rubbed people's faces in it, she seemed like she was just being herself. It would be hard to be as modded as she is and not stick out like a sore thumb.
And their laws sound like the same kind of technical bullshit that places like Texas use to try and outlaw abortion. That being said, if a doctor could legally become a tattoo artist then being the only legal tattoo shop in town might make for an interesting opportunity.

Interesting to see that all the Koreans pictured had very "western" tattoos, lots of english words, etc.

Of course, I'm not saying they shouldn't have that (anymore than a westerner can't have an asian or polynesian style tattoo), but you would expect at least some examples of more local art style.

I bet it's the same. I remember they had weird rules in Japan that you couldn't use the public baths if you had tattoos, or you had to cover them up.

Is that a Korean thing too? I knew about it in Japanese culture but wasn't aware it was also prevalent in Korea.

It's also interesting that they never once mentioned the link between organised crime and tattoos that make the older Koreans wary of them.

Hand Art 3D : Hole and A Scale Drawing

Not bad...but where's the "scale"? Is that how you say 'ladder' in French?

I wonder how this would translate as a tattoo.

He Never Died - Official Red Band Trailer

newtboy says...

I just watched it, and the entire movie he looks angry. Really he looked incredibly high and angry to me, an odd combination, but they totally hide the tattoos (at least I didn't notice them).
Good, weird flick with some *quality ultra violence and canibalism.

It seems to be the first role he's been given where he's actually expected to act, rather than just look angry and tattooed.

Bernie Sanders' accent, explained

ulysses1904 says...

The bit about pop culture portraying New Yorkers as criminals, with the "stigma" leading some to intentionally lose their accents, that was pretty lame for an otherwise intelligent video. It gets presented as a researched fact when it sounds more like a ridiculous theory.

From my experience, current generations weaned on those movies shown in the clip would be more inclined to adopt that accent as just another affectation, tattoo, piercing, meme, avatar, email signature, sampling, bumper sticker.

And the bit about the accent losing favor after WWII, "as Americans were focused on their own identity, rather than maintaining ties to England". Sounds like something a college freshman would write at the last minute to fill out a 1000 word essay.

Damanhur | 100 Wonders | Atlas Obscura

poolcleaner says...

Welp, if I ever disappear, you may seek me out in Damanhur. I mean, if you don't mind journeying into the earth on some ye olde quest for assbackwards cultic knowledge. Probably just a bunch of acid trip tales -- but, hey, man... I seen some things. Those things... they were weeeeird, maaaan.

I could probably show them my tasteful Lord of the Rings tattoos and they would be like, "Welcome, acolyte." Eventually I would request that I have a branch of the cult and call it the Brotherhood of Steel. Yeah. That's how I want to run my section of the vault's cultic order. The future will need us to bring them tales of pop culture and ancient 1970s occult knowledge.
