Shooting A Goat From Over Half A Mile Away

Rachel Carson's Silent Spring

Skeeve says...

While indiscriminate spraying of DDT is obviously stupid and dangerous, the rise in worldwide malaria rates in response to the restrictions on DDTs use have killed hundreds of thousands to millions of humans.

Now, unfortunately, it's too late. Like not using all of one's prescribed antibiotics, we allowed mosquitoes to develop a resistance to DDT when we stopped using it and it doesn't work anymore (at least not as well).

By the early 1960s we had malaria cases in India down to almost zero from 75 Million in 1947. Sri Lanka went from 2.8 million cases in 1946 to 17 cases in 1963. Malaria was on the verge of extinction in these places.

Then we lost DDT thanks to Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring". By 1976 there were 6.4 million cases in India. Today it sits between 2 and 3 million cases a year and India is one of the luckier ones. Throughout most of sub-Saharan Africa more than 50% of all children are infected. In Zambia, in 2005, there were 1353 cases for every 1000 children under 5 years old. That means a huge percent of the children are infected more than once a year.

Was DDT dangerous to spray indiscriminately? Absolutely. Was it saving millions of lives? Without a doubt.

Tiger Woods Needs Some Christianity

rougy says...

Our Lady Rosa Mystica has been a source of friction between Catholic and Buddhist communities in Crooswatta for years. In the last four years, extremists have stopped the construction of the church, which is near a Buddhist monastery. In 2006 and 2007, the Church was targeted by Buddhist extremists, and construction was halted.

There is an ongoing problem with over-aggressive Christian proselytizing conducted in a dishonest and unethical manner by some conservative evangelical groups. Missionaries have targeted the poor with offers of money if they would renounce the Buddha, for example. They have distributed inflammatory literature, such as pamphlets condemning the Buddha as a reincarnation of Satan.

Yeah, those innocent Christians just minding their own business....

Sometimes it's really easy to hate Christians, and totally understandable, too.

They prey on the weak. They constantly go around pushing their beliefs onto other people, and then they call anybody who finally gets sick of their shit and stands up to them an "extremist."

They've been doing it for hundreds of years.

...and yet in the next book, we go and land on Europa, and take out the subsequent monolith swarm trying to blot out the sun with virus straight out of Independence Day.

...and don't get me started on the whole moved-to-pedophile-friendly-Sri-Lanka thing.

So I'm watching a WW2 Documentary, then I get to this part

I coulda watched that clip follow the fat red arrow all the way from Borneo to Malaya (wherever that is...) to Sri Lanka to Jiddah to Cairo to Rome to Madrid to Paris to Warsaw to Boston to D.C. ... No wait, that wouldn't have been a good thing, nevermind.

Christian Girl, Frantic after Father Threatens to Kill Her

Pprt says...

Although the situation she describes happens far more frequently than official numbers show, this is probably a fake.

1) She says her blood is "halal". Halal means "permissible" or "clean" in Arabic. What she should have said is that her blood is haram, "forbidden" or "dirty". Major factual error.

2) Islam in Sri Lanka is negligible, few have exiled.

3) She is much too focused on Christianity, Jesus and praying. She looks like an inexperienced actress playing for Christian propaganda media.

Even though I'm extremely unsympathetic to Muslims in the West, this does not seem like a legitimate account of honour killings.

Fear Mongering About Health Care Reform From The Right Wing

ravioli says...

Oh god people, please don't bring USSR into the mix! For your enlightenment, here is a current list of countries that have universal healthcare, or some sort of publicly sponsored health care system :

Afghanistan, Argentina, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Cuba, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iraq, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Oman, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Ukraine and the United Kingdom

And I don't think these countries are all led by democrat, leftist, socialist,or son-of-African-immigrant leaders either.

Sam Harris - On Calling Out Religion, Death

jonny says...

>> ^MaxWilder:
While it is true that there have been plenty of non-religious reasons for war, it is currently on the top of the list.

Really? Name one currently active armed conflict which is primarily motivated by religion. I can name 5 others which are not. The two active wars in which the U.S. is currently involved have virtually nothing to do with religion. They are about nationalism, tribalism, and political and economic power. Religion is used as a lever for some factions fighting in those conflicts, but it is hardly the root cause. Georgia? Zimbabwe? Myanmar? Sri Lanka? Mexico? How many examples do you need before you realize that religion is not the cause, just an occasionally useful tool?

CNN: Suicide Bomb Attack Caught on Video

Shocking, Israelis celebrating in NYC while documenting 9/11

MrFisk says...

So, this video is absurd and divisive. But I would have upvoted it. Let it be seen. That's how it works here. All the Palin upvotes ain't cause 90% of us are fans...
My good friend once posted a video on here that was inappropriate (I learned after a Siftquisition, reading the fucking rules, two week ban, internet vocabulary 101, juvenile retaliation, downvote sprees, etc.). I can appreciate why his video (which was a suicide bomber in Sri Lanka), and not this one, violate the rules here. This is just wretched propaganda for better or worse. It doesn't hold a candle to what nearly got me wacked on the sift and should be sifted.
If a video is truly that vile, it will be downvoted to subterranean levels. I would *return and let the die be cast.
*shameless self promote
