So basically they set up an audioless, public webcam between New York and London? I don't get the hoopla.

Considering how many people I talk to on a daily basis that are amazed they can have custom made ringtones for their cell phones, I can understand the fascination with these art projects.

Wait til they learn about skype and realize they can do the same thing at home.

It's much more than fun for me to argue these points. Philosophy effects every aspect of our lives and since there can be a right answer and a wrong answer to the existance of god it seems like an essential question.

if you're interested i'd even be willing to discuss points on skype www.skype.com (eliminates any phone bill)

Hmm. The only "loose" scientific method i know of is used by sloppy or fraudulent scientists; let's not confuse evidence (however valid) with proof. As close as evidence can sometimes get you to proof, there is still a very clear line between the two. Thus, in the absence of proof, when we accept something as true, we are inescapably doing so with some measure of "faith". This is, of course, rarely "blind" faith, but rather, faith backed by evidence. Sometimes that evidence is strong and plentiful, sometimes it is weak or sparse, and sometimes it is non-existent (intuitive) or flat-out wrong. Still, in *all* cases (big and small), in the absence of repeatable, verifiable (i.e. scientific) proof, it requires "faith" to believe that something is true. That said, intuition is the only form of "blind faith" i am familiar with. In my experience most of what people call "blind faith" would be better described as "myopic faith", a willful restriction of scope when considering evidence rather than an evidence-less faith. This is why it tends to piss people off when they're accused of blind faith; such an accusation amounts to a callous rejection of the evidence they've relied on.

This is more or less my framework for understanding and discussing these things (faith, evidence, proof, etc.). I'm of course, always happy to refine it if someone points out flaws, but it hasn't changed much for me in recent years.

As to briefing you on my faith, i must ask, to what end? Are you genuinely curious? Just eager to debate for the fun of it? Looking to demonstrate your superiority? Looking to convert me to agnosticism or atheism? Wanting an examination of your beliefs so you can refine/alter them? Have you even examined your reasons? I ask because it's no small thing you ask of me, a stranger on the internet. My faith in Christ is, if you will, more of a journey than a destination. Describing it in a videosift comment box will be quite inadequate, as i'm sure you can imagine. Such things are much better done in patient, real life conversations. It is not scientific study, after all. So really, if i'm going to attempt this for you, i'd like to know where you want to go with it first.

If I may address two points in reverse order,

Perhaps I have painted you in an improper way, some days i get caught up trying to sharpen my argument skills do make poor assumptions to open a conversation up (my freinds find me bickering in the street with the Jehova's Witnesses frequently). To a degree I will admit fault on this occasion. I'm sorry if I was insulting at some point. If you're willing to continue the conversation please brief me on your perspective.

Secondly,

You are misconstruing what valid evidence is (I believe we have a serious disagreement on this point). Your understanding of your wife's love for you isnt based on faith, it's based on evidence (whether subjective, or anecdotal). I would argue that you do follow a loose scientific method while trying to understand your wife's love (since you do seem to be an analytical person.) But blind faith leads people down horrible paths in relationships the same way it does in many other aspects of life (I'm not saying you have blind faith just that you are misunderstanding your methods). The wife who is physically abused by her husband but goes back over and over again because she is convinced of his love for her is a valid example of poor evidence evaluation (anecdotal, subjective or otherwise).

Kuwait has by far the best mobile system I have seen so far.

You buy a phone, any phone, all phones are opened and are not locked to any specific company. iPhone, Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, any brand...

You buy a phone number and a SIM card for around 6 dollars, you put it in the phone. You buy a calling card for the phone depending on how much you will use it, I buy a card for 6 dollars that lasts me for a month or more.

That's it. That's all you have to do. The phone cards are ridiculously ubiquitous so you never have issues running out of calling time. You get roaming from the get go, I called my dad from Uzbekistan and several times in Turkey, it ate through my credit but I could it easily without having a special plan or anything.

If you want mobile internet you can make a plan, but its relatively cheap and you get 7Mb speeds, its data capped though to punish folks torrenting off the connection. But it's usefulness in general is relatively limited in this nation.

The only faults I can mention is that international calling is ridiculously expensive, but then you can use Skype so its not really an issue.

Comparing this to my experience in Canada, where I was contractually locked to one single phone, if I broke the contract I had to pay a 250$ penalty, I could only use and upgrade to Motorola phones. If I wanted something better I have to buy the phone from the Phone company, and its locked so I can't use the same phone if I switched from Fido to Rogers Wireless. The plans were always metered in such a way that if am a middle range user am screwed, its too little alloted minutes or too many minutes and too damn expensive. I hated it so much that I smashed my phone 2 hours before flying out of Montreal.

It was cathartic.

What do you want or what are you giving for Christmas? Gift Ideas Accepted Here (Blog Entry by lucky760)

thesnipe says...

Hmmm well I have to say that we ordered a 42" lcd tv with Bose surround sound for my dad for his Christmas gift (and birthday gift as well hehe).

I'm getting my mom a...*insert blank stare*...I need ideas! She's just getting into the computer and whole e-mail/skype thing. I have a USB speakerphone for her, a KT Tunstall and Coldplay cd she's been wanting, but I could use another gift.

My best friends are getting some gift certificates to American Eagle or Express.

I have a million spoiled cousins so no worries there...

and myself, well I sorta got this computer with the 5.1 speakers as part of my early gift but my parents won't count it b/c it's used for school (yes I know I'm spoiled). Soo I really have my eyes set and room cleared in this house for a Rod Hockey Table. I grew up playing one at the arcade each week with my dad and I've always been wanting one. Not to mention I'm wishing for new Altama boots, I wear the 14" high Altamas for my EMS duties but need something scaled back for everyday wear.

Using Skype in Japanese Language Classes

winkler1 says...

Cool idea.. wonder who they're talking to? Seems like there might be a lot of lonely older people who'd enjoy conversation.

podcasts like learn italian are another good resource, good for listening where/whenever on a regular basis, but actual conversation is much more interactive..if you can talk over the phone/skype without body language/contextual cues, you've got to be pretty good.

Using Skype in Japanese Language Classes

I wish we had Skype when I started teaching Japanese. It was always a challenge to provide opportunity for students to talk with native speakers. I used to have to arrange outings and invite visitors to the classroom and that wasn't always easy.
