Panic! At The Disco - The Ballad Of Mona Lisa

Lilithia says...

And I thought 'they' had outgrown that label by now.
I wouldn't even have guessed that this was the same band as above:

(Although technically, it seems to be the singer's solo project nowadays.)

Obama sings 'Amazing Grace' at Clementa Pinckney funeral

bareboards2 says...

I know you were being honest. I think you missed the historical, cultural and personal meaning of the moment in a way that detracts from the significance. And starting low was the point, I think -- this is the tradition, isn't it, of low slow hymns that come from deep experience?

Sometimes it just isn't the time to make a joke. Comedy is tragedy plus time, as the saying goes. We are in the midst of tragedy. Too soon, I think, and coming from the wrong color skin.

[Coming back to clarify -- indeed it is the imperfections of his singing that brought even more resonance. Singing in front of a worldwide audience, when you aren't a singer? It is the imperfections that highlight the humanity. Who cares about perfection when your soul calls out for grace? Isn't that the point?]

No no no offense/diss intended. I was just caught off guard. In my mind I was comparing it to his beautiful [but brief] rendition of Al Green's I'm So In Love With You ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6uHR90Sq6k

And thanks @dag for Sweet Home Chicago

Songhoy Blues - Al Hassidi Terei

Fifty-Centaur says...

It's Gao...not Goa. They may have been living there at the time but they are definitely singing in a Timbuktu dialect which I'm guessing is where they, or at least the singer, is from.

Al Hassidi Terrei is loosely translated 'Extremist People'

The songs lyrics are a bit difficult to take apart beause the music garbles them a bit and they are a mixture of basic West African French and the Songhai Timbuktu Dialect which I'm less familiar with then Gao dialect.

In short though "Al Hassidi Terrei mind your own business, ...then something about the meeting of life, love and wives (or generally women)....and then we're not tired (or poor/beaten down).

and repeat...

Nicole Scherzinger Busts Conan For Staring At Her Boobs

ChaosEngine says...

So, apparently she is a singer in a band of ex burlesque dancers whose biggest hit was "don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me".

And now she's on Conan schilling for the living embodiment of what's wrong with music today....

My sympathy, she does not have it.

Ingrid Michaelson covers Radiohead's Creep on the Nerdist

dannym3141 says...

I think she has a nice voice, but i didn't enjoy the cover.. it's one of those uncoverable ones, for me. Banjo often sounded cheery which was weird with the lyrics and sentiment of the song. But clearly a very talented singer.

Nightwish - Storytime (Live at Wacken Open Air 2013)

Lilithia says...

Nightwish used to be my favorite band as a teenager. I stopped listening to them about the time they gained mainstream popularity, when they released two albums I didn't like very much and then got a new lead singer who had a very different voice. I recently found out that they have yet again changed their singer and I really like their new album. She has an amazing voice, which in my opinion fits their sound much better than the previous one.

Some of my favorite songs :

Elvis' 1st Recording Digitally Transferred

lucky760 says...

Does something like this sound better because psychologically you know it's a direct recording of the singer's voice vibrated and etched onto that surface or does it actually sound better acoustically? Obviously, you'd have to ignore all the crackles.

Sign-Language Interpreter Steals The Show

poolcleaner says...

Ah, man, that'd be cool if the artists themselves did awesome, meaningful sign language dances. There's gotta be a singer that learns sign language so they can ride that viral dream wave. Bjork could do it and it'd probably look totally just like her normal erratic movement.

All About That Bass - Postmodern Jukebox European Tour

Payback says...

Fun fact: the singer on the left, Ariana Savalas, shares the same last name as Telly Savalas, "Kojack".

...actually, she's his daughter. So I guess having the same last name isn't that odd. Sorry.
