When your daughters new shorts are shorter than you expected

When your daughters new shorts are shorter than you expected

Sagemind says...

Personally, I think the dad is just attention grabbing since seeing other people do it online, it's just a dumb trend.

As a father, I really don't think her shorts are too short - and definitely not shorter than every other teen girl is wearing, her shorts cover her cheeks which is pretty fair game. They look absolutely average.

If he thinks they are too short, then maybe he needs to curb his thinking.

FORMULA OFFROAD WORLD CUP 2018!

newtboy jokingly says...

It's a lot shorter than flying to Iceland to see it, which I did in '15.

Really, that was probably near 10-15 hours of event from 2 days cut down to :48 minutes....there's just no pleasing some people. ;-)

Well as my wife said the other day, this is too damn long.

I've seemed to noticed that shorter videos tend to get more views and upvotes. Maybe because the longer a video is, one forgets to vote or simply a long video doesn't cater to a short attention span. If the first few minutes tend to be boring it gets aborted before the good stuff. Right or wrong that's my take.

What do you think? You've got more experience than I do here.

Honest Election Ad - Batman by-election

They pronounce his name exactly like anyone else in Melbourne would, except that a lot of us (not me!) would put a na-na-na-na-na before the batman.

I actually think a lot of them think the train station is named after the fictional crime fighter, particularly the shorter crowd.

Pretty sure it's pronounced "bate-man" rather than like the superhero. Odd that an Australian satire mob would get that wrong.

Water Wheels Can Pump Water Over A Mile Without Electricity

newtboy says...

I wondered that too, but the pressure it produced (see 1:33) seems to argue that it's the cumulative height of all the coils added together (not just a multiple of the maximum height, though, because each successive coil is shorter).
That's just my guess, though.

SFOGuy said:

So, the maximum hydraulic pressure head (lift) would be to the same height as the top of the wheel?
Or is there a more subtle engineering take on this?

@SDGundamX -- I agree completely that any registration / licensing system would have to be central / federal to do any good. I'm also, like you, pretty pessimistic about anything actually happening.

These kids will be a smaller direct annoyance (to NRA-funded legislators) for a shorter time than "occupy". That doesn't mean they are wasting their time though. The people that they can sway are moderate republican voters. I think "common sense" things like registration and licensing could be sold to enough people to put some pressure on republican reelection chances. On the other hand, there's the NRA and other lobbying organizations with a proven track record and nearly unlimited resources to muck up the works.

I dunno. I'm quite pessimistic about chances, but I do hope we're wrong.

The Truth About The Tesla Semi-Truck

TheFreak says...

So wait...he talks about how important the weight is because it determines the load that can be carried. He does the weight calculations and then immediately starts talking about the cost of the truck and never finishes his weight analysis.

According to his estimation, the weight of the unloaded truck with trailer is 7 tons. If the batteries on a 500 mile truck weigh 8 tons then the total 15 ton vehicle is lighter than the ~17 ton average for a standard semi with trailer. I'd round up for the weight of the motors and since his empty weight calculation seems a tad low. So you can assume the weights of a Tesla truck and stardard truck are at least within spitting distance of each other.

Range is less of an issue since a driver is only allowed to drive a maximum of 11 hours in a 14 hour period. So assuming they drove a solid 11 hours at 60 miles per hour (since that's what the 500 mile range is based on), the standard truck can drive 160 miles further. But if you're driving 11 hours without a break, you're an idiot. And Tesla indicates that a battery can fully charge in under 30 minutes.

Last point, he estimates the battery cost alone will be $108K and $180K but Tesla has set the expected price of the actual trucks as $150K and $180K. Considering a traditional truck runs $80K - $150K, it seems the return on investment for a Tesla truck might be shorter than a traditional truck, given the economy of electric compared fossil fuel.

Great video though. Love all the math.

Colbert To Trump: 'Doing Nothing Is Cowardice'

bcglorf says...

@newtboy and @scheherazade,

I think I may have come up with a shorter line of evidence for a well armed population being protection against tyranny.

Granted, a poorly armed population with strong arms control laws doesn't necessarily devolve into tyranny. We can all demonstrate this with counter examples like up here in Canada. However, can anyone name an oppressive dictatorship that had 2nd amendment level freedoms for every man and woman in their state? I can't think of a single example myself.

As I said before, that doesn't lead me to immediately declare zero restrictions on guns are thus worth any cost to forestall future tyranny. However, I have to acknowledge that the NRA style argument for protection against tyranny isn't entirely without merit.

That leads to my objections with declaring that it is objectively obvious that gun freedoms must morally be pulled back, while at the same time objectively obvious that idealogical/religious practice freedoms must not. We have ample examples of extremists gathering together to plot violence, mayhem and death on a grand scale and putting some extra lines in the sand of when that becomes unacceptable is no more obviously immoral than restricting gun ownership.
