Amazing 3D Video Mapping on Physical Objects

ATI Eyefinity 6 - Left For Dead 2 on six monitors 5760x2160

Croccydile says...

Yeah the big black line in the middle of the action is a bit of a turn off. You would need projectors aligned up to achieve this effect without the border... but nobody really has this... or 6 monitors to play games with.

This would be useful for PC based simulators, but I doubt I will see gamers with this setup and more than 3 screens.

What dag heard when the iPad was announced

Yes, to be honest I thought the presentation was ridiculous- almost a parody of past events- I was shaking my head through most of it. Jobs also seemed, not so sharp - sadly a bit feeble. The reaper gets us all. >> ^spoco2:

I know I'm a fanboy. I think my loyalty is wrapped up in a great deal of nostalgia. And as Don Draper knows - it's a powerful motivator. I also use Windows everyday at work- so I associate that with something I don't care for too much. I think that's where my psychology is at. >> ^spoco2:
Ha... awesome... I thought this was just going to have comments about how spot on and funny this video was, because Apple's product launches and videos for their products really are over the top, superlative filled drivel (completely independent of how good the product is).
But then Dag took it personally and IT WAS ON!
Funny stuff... funny stuff.
As has been said up there... this is making fun of THE PRESENTATION, not the product, not the company... THE PRESENTATION.
Everyone just chill out a bit and you'll feel more awesome and magical.

You have to admit though, the presentations and how they talk about things that other devices have had for ages as if it's the second coming of christ is pretty damn funny... and I think the iPad is where the sheen is getting a little dulled on their methods... people have let it slide in the past because they are wowed by the awesome gadget, but now... whether the iPad is a success or not, it certainly doesn't live up to the superlatives thrown around about it in these presentations. I would never call it magical... never.

A Parallel Image: Every Pixel Between Sender and Reciever

Croccydile says...

I forget where, but similar concept (although with older technology) was used for a billboard to produce images like this in much larger sizes back in the 30s. I wish I could remember what city it was or what it was called, just an old newsreel about using a projector to "blow up" a motion picture into lights just like this. Was pretty bad ass for pre-transistor tech.

Augmented reality for mechanics

gwiz665 says...

I think there are still a bunch of problems with a head-mounted AR system, but to use it in cars as a HUD, like it's being used in Jet Fighters would be awesom-o! It just depends on how expensive the technology is and what real-world applications it could have. The above video is one example, but something "simpler" like a built-in GPS system would be fancy too.
>> ^bmacs27:
AR is the new VR. It has much broader applicability. Also, because the real world is also there, it often doesn't cause the discomfort that more immersive displays can cause for inexperienced viewers. It's still expensive, but there are low cost solutions that are beginning to emerge.
One problem with the technology has been the logistics of carrying the weight of a display on your head. A patent I'm excited about was filed by Apple a year or two ago. It's for a head-mounted display which is effectively projected on glasses in front of the face. Now that alone isn't innovative, but their idea is to pipe the projection through fiber optics from a hip, or otherwise mounted projector. That avoids the many of the freedom of movement problems associated with head mounted displays. Apple could once again show the rest of the market how to make preexisting technologies commercially viable.

Amazing and Unbeliavably Realistic Projections on Buildings

Amazing and Unbeliavably Realistic Projections on Buildings

Jaace says...

Seems like this entire thing is post-processed. Some of the stuff they are doing would have to have the projector be dead on and one would have to be in a certain spot to see it correctly. Also, why are all the pedestrians in front of the big building no looking at the sheer awesomeness that is happening behind them? Because it's not actually happening in real-time.

Fake.

Proposed future using Touch for User Interface

raverman says...

I like the desktop touch interface replacing the keyboard and mouse.

I dislike the idea stacking of all programs horizontally on a plane and zooming in and out. Zooming in and out takes time to graphically render when all you want to do is change your focus.
I also doubt it would work very well with layout on multiple screens or when sharing an app on a projector.

Obscura CueLight Pool Table ($200,000)

spawnflagger says...

I don't see how this can possibly cost $200,000...
Maybe if it were bottom projection instead of top, or if the actual surface was of a custom transparent "slate" material, I would be impressed.

Here's some way-overboard estimates:
pool table - $3500
high-end graphics workstation - $4000
high-end (8000 lumen+) projector - $10,000
IR LED array - $100
high speed CCD cameras - $400
mounting hardware/wiring - $2000
full custom software (programming time) - $10,000

so that's $30k, not $200k.

Playing with Google's Holodeck

Croccydile says...

What impresses me more is the rig thats handling that many high def displays without much lag and all the good details turned on.

If they had more space they could have used projectors and a concave/shperical screen for a better seamless display. This or this would seem a bit more immersive.
