Robot drywall installer

Drachen_Jager says...

But it's not going to be 1% of the cost for a very, very long time. It probably takes a team of technicians to keep it going right now. 5-10 years from now you can probably get one of those for a hundred grand or so, but maintenance would run you around the same as a full-time drywaller. You're throwing a lot of numbers out there as if they mean something, but they don't. Also, the thing needs downtime to recharge, even once the technology becomes practical and affordable, so 24/7 is not an option. Either you need a worker to replace batteries every few hours, or it needs to plug in to a base station and go offline for significant periods.

It doesn't matter if it takes 10 times as long if it's 1% of the cost. This thing can work 24/7 without needing any breaks at all.

I'm in the process of designing and building a house right now (as in, I'm paying an architect and builder, not doing it myself).

If my builder came to me and said "hey, we can drop the labour cost of building by 50%, but your house will take an extra month", I'd sign that so fast his head would spin.

Ecuador The Equator - Water Demonstration - Coriolis Effect

drradon says...

completely bogus demonstration: if you look carefully, you will see that the water in the basin for the first demonstration was completely still - and drained straight down. But for the north and south demonstrations, she poured the water into the basin at one side of the basin - setting up circulation in the basin - and immediately pulled the plug. What she was demonstrating was conservation of angular momentum, not the coriolis effect.

Coolest business card ever

ChaosEngine says...

That is insanely cool. I mean, there's no way in hell I'd ever plug any kind of USB thing into my machine, but from an aesthetic and novelty geek thing.... it's *quality

A horse with a bit of a fetish for electricity?

Ashenkase says...

Do you have it plugged in? Is the on switch on?

Guaranteed its off or the current is a fraction of what it should be, horses jump out of their shoes when they hit a live wire.

Family Guy S16E18: Millenials -- Who are they?

CrushBug says...

I have a plug-in for Chrome that turns "millennials" into "snake people" and my internet is a better place. What I got to see of your post was:

"Snake people, yawn."

Man saws his AR15 in half in support of gun control

harlequinn says...

One of the two of us has a paramedic degree and worked as a paramedic... I spent 3 years at university learning what and how things make holes in people and how to plug them up and keep them alive.

So yes. I'm serious.

The barricades are an interesting point. The movable concrete blocks don't stand up to small trucks or larger. Large steel bollards on the other hand will stop everything bar a tank.

newtboy said:

Possible, yes. As easy, not at all. Most large outside events make it impossible to get near crowds with a car these days with barricades. Even where they aren't, vehicular murder takes far more effort than pulling a trigger.
Swords and knives, get real. You cannot be serious, so I'm walking away.

Bruce Lee - Jedi

ChaosEngine says...

Oh god, that's just about the dumbest idea I've ever seen.

I'll give the creator credit though, this is better than the usual "turn everything into a lightsabre" videos.

Although I'm starting to think that "add lightsabre" is now a standard plug-in in After Effects.

Aliens: The Ride - Planet Coaster Dark Ride

testlump says...

Plug this in to a VR headset and a pneumatic chair and you'd be in for a hell of a ride.

Also, how great was the sound design in Aliens 1, 2 (SE) and 3 (Assembly Cut Obvs)? The maternal self destruct voice from the first movie never gets old.

Unblocking a blocked sewer connection at a manhole

radx says...

At least the plug's only at the end of the pipe.

At my parents' house last year, the pipe connecting the manhole to the actual sewer below the street was clogged. Which isn't so bad, unless nobody really notices it and the sewage just keeps collecting in the manhole. After pumping a good 1.5m³ of delicious sewage out into the nearby bushes (smells great at ~25°C), I went down into the underworld (again, great smell). Found the pipe in question and managed to insert a hose with backwards-firing jets into it, connected to a high-pressure washer. The bloody blockage was 6m into the pipe. Probably grease and fat from the kitchen sink, most of all. Anyway, half an hour of bumping into it over and over again finally cracked it.

Not the most pleasant experience. No cockroaches though, so there's that.

Cassini Burns into Saturn After Grand Finale

noims says...

In 1997 I was working on a groundbreaking new idea - a small clamshell box, maybe 15cm square, with a built-in keyboard and lcd screen, that you could plug into your network to send and receive email. I wasn't aware of anything else out there that would make email so portable.

This was the year Cassini was launched. This was the kind of level of technology it went out there with. Fortunately, unlike the box above, Cassini really went places.

Dangers of Using Electronics in Bathroom

noims says...

Can confirm. A cm or so of insulation on live and neutral pins on plugs here in Ireland (and UK) have definitely saved me and probably my toddler from shocks / death / learning experiences.

I can tell you it was a little alarming seeing how he unplugs stuff. It's hard not to give into the temptation of a few hundred volts of rigged 'I told you so', but no one wants him living like Medhi here.

Rude Lady Fires a Long Time Janitor For Leaving 8 Min Early

newtboy says...

What a disgusting bitch. As if she isn't ugly enough physically, she has to display an even more sickeningly ugly personality publicly.

There's no way she would have paid him overtime for being there 15 min longer, and the fire dept might have fined them if he hadn't given them access, or just left and not inspected, closing the school and definitely costing the janitor his job for not letting them in.
Do they not have a punch clock? That should back him up completely with HR. I can only hope they're addressing Susan's inappropriate behavior and reprimanding her strongly.

He's better off. He'll get another job thanks to this video, a better one with a boss who's not using a pineapple for a butt plug.

I think you are going to be sorry....Mrs Susan Opferman of Alpharetta Georga, for this behavior. Someone's going to be offended and find you and/or use these overhanded, insulting, unfair and dehumanizing tactics against you and your children. I expect Webb Bridge middle school will be getting a large number of complaints about this woman working with children, maybe costing her job. Turn about is fair play...get ready for a shit storm.

A good question I have, why would a custodian's hours end at the same time school gets out? Do they leave the daily messes to dry and harden overnight until 6:30 am? It would make far more sense if he got off at 4.

Edit: oops. I made a mistake. I just realized this is normal and accepted behavior for a beachmaster. Carry on.

Neil deGrasse Tyson - Science in America

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

I love science.

Also good to remember that it's corruptible too. Despotic leaders get dissidents declared mentally ill.

Going farther back a kind of science brought us eugenics.

Science is often a victim of orthodoxy. Bad science becomes "common sense" way too easily. Just off the top of my head, telling parents not to feed their babies peanuts may have caused thousands of cases of peanut allergies. https://globenewswire.com/news-release/2017/04/14/960387/0/en/Pulling-the-Plug-on-Peanut-Allergy.html
