Four producers remix the same jazz piano sample

Sagemind says...

So here's my opinion.
I hate this.

Why you ask?
Because, while each producer has become the artist, none of them respect the music. I understand this is the assignment. But it's wholly representative of what's wrong with the music industry today.

Don't miss-understand me, I respect the artistry of the process they go through. They have all created a new personal piece. Respect for that part.

BUT, Music is more than re-sampling. The ORIGINAL artist matters. When I listen to music, I want to hear the artist who created the piece. I want to experience the sound of someone playing actual instruments. There is no replacement for the talent of a musician.

I would accept this IF the producer, actually crated their own samples first. This in affect is like a do-it-yourself paint-by-numbers kit.

I love the sounds, but I never want to hear music where it's so overly-produced that it erases or lays claim to a sound above the original musician's piece.

Where have all the musician's gone? - They all went digital! and the music died.

The people who made the video talk about it here. I listened to a bit and they mention the recording and playback speeds were mucked with a lot, but it's apparent the robots playing the instruments were real in a physical way (the music they played sucked it seems). Listening to them talk about how crazy programming the robots were was entertaining. But yes lots of movie magic type stuff im guessing.

CGI rendered tests to further fool you into thinking it's not all CG. It's been done before.

This seems like a job for Captain Disillusion!

EDIT: Perhaps I should clarify a bit. By CGI I don't just mean it's all 3D renders. I mean more that it's all computer trickery of some sort. Some 3D, some compositing, lots of time manipulation. Just look at how often he's clearly green screened in. Look at how the cymbals move. A robotic arm can punch through a piano? There's a lot of CG going on here. And if it's in the crazier shots, I don't see why it wouldn't be in the simpler shots.

The Trooper Believer

This clip from Spinal Tap is apropos, because it's a lampoon of the Monkees video, but they were also lampooning Maiden, Sabbath, Priest, Saxon, Randy Rhoads, Ian Gillan, etc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-BYzaDwNoE

This is an interesting interview with Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, because it addresses a rumor that they had walked out of Spinal Tap because they believed the band was making fun of them (which was untrue): http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/moslive/article-1022475/He-aint-heavy-hes-captain----Iron-Maiden-rocker.html

It's important to note that the members of Spinal Tap were all musicians and played their own music from the get go, whereas the Monkees only recorded their vocals and had other people play the instruments. Of course, in time the Monkees learned to play, even if there was so much wasted recording time they had to bring in other musicians to fill in. They eventually improved enough to play live shows with their own instrument play.

I gotta do my best to defend the Monkees, Iron Maiden, and Spinal Tap, because they ARE all great acts and entertainers. I say ARE because, as of 2016, The Monkees, Iron Maiden, AND Spinal Tap are all touring to this day. Not together, of course. That would be too awesome.

How Jimmy Fallon spent his summer break

MilkmanDan says...

I know he plays guitar, and that would be his fret hand -- hope he can get back to 100% there. I find playing an instrument to be a great way to keep in a positive mental state after being sick or injured.

New Yorker on Kanye West, Beck

Okay, I just posted this on another video..., but it may make more sense here.

"I will never respect Kanye for his actions. And to top it, I will never forgive him for his contributions to the music industry. Does he even play an instrument?"

Need More Proof That The Music Industry Is Fake? Here You Go

Grimm says...

I guess that is maybe the difference between 50 years ago and today. Yes The Monkees were not a band that came together organically...the members were chosen just as they would cast members of a TV show. BUT they were all musicians and singers and they were embarrassed that people thought they were fake and could not even play their instruments. While true they did not play on the first couple of albums (not because they weren't capable but because the studio didn't want them to) they DID play at their live performances and they fought the studio that hired them so that they eventually could also play on their albums.

It was important to them that the fans knew when they came to see a LIVE show that they would actually see and hear them singing and performing the songs live.

That doesn't seem to be of concern to today's pop stars.

Whole thing gets a giant "meh" from me. Pop music is fake? Wow, we only found that out 50 years ago with the Monkees.

If you want real music, there's plenty out there, it's just not in the charts.

I'm begining to think I missed a line in the videosifts terms of agreement that says "must be able to play an instrument".

Good for you Ching! You do need better recording equipment though....but I'm just being a dick....good for you for doing something you love.

This man has an amazing vocal range.

I don't understand how he can do this, and he's able to play an instrument at the same time as well, I feel like I've wasted my life.

Handy Fact: There are historical reports of fleas glued to the base of the flea circus enclosure, instruments were then glued to the flea performers and the enclosure was heated. At 80mph How Long Does It Take To Go 80 Miles?

Wow. Why. The FUCK. Did this dude settle for this dumb ass bitch? Intelligence is pretty high on the list of requirements for most self-respecting guys.

Knowing that a car traveling at 80mph takes an hour to travel 80 miles doesn't exactly make him Einstein. My girlfriend in high school was very similar to this girl. Just had a very different and creative way of thinking about things that I just found very sweet and attractive, even if she was completely wrong. Musically talented, she could play several instruments and had as much difficulty trying to teach me the piano as I had trying to teach her small engine repair. But she loved the buttsex. Oh yeah... loved the buttsex.

Um...it's not "different and creative" if it's wrong. That is just being wrong. It's only different and creative if it gets a workable answer.

I still hold to the idea that this is all staged and scripted.

A little techno to brighten your day

swedishfriend says...

Before the term electronica existed, techno was the broad genre of any programmed music as opposed to music played with instruments. Since mid 90's popular culture uses the term techno in a completely different way to describe a very narrow part of what techno used to represent. To me electronica is and was a completely useless term since I already had a term for what electronica represents and I still use techno in that broader original sense of the word.
