It's just a show, but it's such a great show that I'm still so relieved to this day that King Joffrey is dead!! I was so sick of his shit for what felt like an eternity; that's some terrific writing.

I believe you're thinking about it in reverse.

From season 1, a blonde (Lannister) mating with a black-haired (Baratheon) is expected to yield a black-haired child. (That's why Ned knew blonde Joffrey wasn't Robert's son.)

For this theory, black-haired Lyanna Stark supposedly made Jon Snow with blonde-haired Rhaegar Targaryen, so it would be expected that his hair would be black.

I didn't say that only the likable characters died. I don't believe the death of an unlikable character compensates for the death of a likable one. I was referring to a quote by Martin, in which he stated that every time a character got so popular that the reader expected them to be the hero of the story, he had to kill them off immediately. I just hope that this isn't the whole reason for doing this but that it serves the bigger picture of the story.

I also really loved Joffrey as a character and I was sad, too, that he died, although it was very satisfactory after all that he had done. But he was still an interesting character who will be missed. So I don't only mourn the likable characters. I mourn interesting characters with wasted narrative potential.

Yeah, I know. I hated it when Joffrey and Lysa died too. Why does he always kill the likable characters? So predictable

It's the same reason why Joffrey needs to remind people all the time he's the King, he isn't and somewhere in his broken, pathetic mind he knows it. It's the same with these guys.

Tywin is a cold, calculating magnificent bastard, and in the books that's really all he is.

One of the reasons I love this scene (and it's substantially different from the books, where Arya never meets Tywin) is that it humanises Tywin somewhat.

Some fiction likes to portray the bad guys as inhuman monsters, but in reality most people (even the very worst) are not like that. They came to where they are through a series of small steps, each more horrific than the last, but each justified in their own mind.

That, to me, is far scarier than the likes of Joffrey or the Mountain. Joffrey is just broken, and Ser Gregor is almost literally a monster. But Tywin made himself into what he is.

And that's the brilliance of this story. When you can feel sympathy for a character whose first significant act is to push a small boy out a window because he was saw him engaged in incest, you have a good writer.
