Faux News Obituary Trashes Kurt Vonnegut--LiberalViewer

Yogi says...

"Vonnegut who failed at Suicide 23 years ago..."

To me that clinched it. You don't have to like his politics but shitting on Vonnegut is like the Irish shitting on Samuel Beckett's political leanings. A great writer is a great writer...doesn't matter what he believes it's how he puts it.

This point was made also by Fry defending his selection of Jeremy Clarkson on several episodes of Qi. Fry said essentially that Clarkson may be tiresome and irritating with beliefs, but he simply writes too well for him to just be ignored.

You may not like Vonnegut...but whether it's an obit or a critique, you have to respect the abilities of such a great American writer.

Top Gear hosts make fun of Mexicans

As an Englishman if I spent my days explaining we don't all have crap teeth, live in Castles, are rubbish in bed and dress like tramps I'd never leave the house.
This has reminded me of a program in Jeremy Clarkson's CV that might be interesting. Called Jeremy Clarkson meets the Neighbours he travelled around Europe seeing if people matched their stereotypes. And then at the end a representive from that country would be interviewed and happily mock their nation.

As it was pointed out in Steve Coogan's article, there is a huge difference between rich white people making fun of other rich white people, and rich white people making fun of mexicans. For example, the same racist joke can be perfectly acceptable coming from a black comedian, but quite offensive when told by a white comedian.

I imagine that there's not much exposure to Mexicans in Britain, and perhaps Britain is spared the tension between different races, cultures, and social/economic status that long marred American history. So out of sheer ignorance I guess Hammond's joke could seem quite harmless.

Just out of curiosity, how would people react if an Englishman said similarly degrading things about the Scottish or Indians? (though I'm sure Scotland is much better off than Mexico)

You know if any significant number of people are getting up in arms about this they are way too thin-skinned and should have far better things to do than bashing a comedy motoring programme.

Yes these are lazy stereotypes but they happily take the piss out of themselves and anyone else. It's a silly programme, not always as funny as it thinks it is and always much better when they do serious motoring items.

And what about the millions of websites saying unpleasant things about Mexico? Is someone going to spend time and money getting those censored? No of course not, free speech is always going to bring you into contact with things you don't like to hear. Suck it up.

I hate Top Gear (one because I'm not really into cars and two because I think Jeremy Clarkson is a world class wanker) but I have to agree with teebeenz. That was just awful and unfunny.

On a side-note, anyone who thinks Political Correctness is a good thing has seriously lost their mind.
