John Oliver - Refugee Crisis

RedSky says...

Right, the Russians who prop up a dictator whose almost immediate response to the Arab uprising was to fire on the protesters and who terrifies his people into submission with barrel bombs and chemical weapons - they're the good guys.

See here's the funny thing. You or whatever you're reading is stuck in the Cold War mindset of the US intervening to prop up murderous dictators against the perceived threat of communism. However now that it's Russia intervening on behalf of its favored dictators you're too stuck in your narrative to see the irony of your position.

Russia is only intervening against ISIS to the extent it props up Assad. The US still of course supports dictators when it is in its economic interests (see Saudi Arabia and implicitly supporting its war in Yemen) but the fact that it's largely avoided arming the government or rebel groups in Syria, neither of which have their hands clean should indicate a lesson learned from arming the mujaheddin against the Soviets in Afghanistan, not a mistake.

You do realise it was Russia and China who were against causing the clusterfuck in Syria in the first place? At least in Iraq we bothered to come up with an excuse to go to war, even if there turned out to be no WMD. In Syria we didn't even bother to do that, we just said Assad is a bad person and sent in mercenaries and lots of guns and called them rebels and freedom fighters and watched the whole place blow up. Assad is such a bad person? Compared to the Saudi's? The Russians are the only ones who have stopped the place become an ISIS state by now.

Michael Jackson - Black Or White Tribute

transmorpher says...

I guess I failed, but I was attempting to point out that the political issues they are showing also aren't Black or White.

They did spend the first 60 seconds of the video delivering a political message (with terrorist/ISIS related news clips).

I wouldn't have commented had it been only great dancing. But nativity of their message bothers me.

Trust me, I'd love to live in a world where a bunch of attractive people can dance away our problems

BOOOOOOO! As if this video has absolutely anything to do with ISIS. Did you really feel the need to push some personal issue you have into a dance videos comment thread? Less buzz kill, please. It's just a music/dance video.

Tell that to ISIS and their millions of supporters. I'm sure they're all ears.

Kevin Smith Shares A Moment With Daughter Harley Quinn Smith

Fairbs says...

It immediately reminded me of Harlequin Romances (hmm wonder what that means for me?). Anyway it just came off as kind of a dumb name to be burdened with. In other news, Isis has becomes a lot less popular as a baby name recently.

Youtube: Blocking Revenue is Censorship

Babymech says...

You can't pretend that all content is good content, though. Youtube needs to weed out the Isis recruitment videos and the kitten crushing, and they need to be able to reliably promise advertisers that their ads won't appear in front of that shit. YT has convinced creators that likes and views are actually what's important, but I bet YT can lose 100 large channels before they are willing to lose one large advertiser.

eric3579's link explains it, but there are options for advertisers who want to advertise on anything, regardless of content, and there are options for those who want to only stick to the approved material. Given the sheer volume of videos on YT, an automated system is necessary, and it's a good thing that they've now given users an option to appeal the non-monetization.

Youtube's advantage is not that they have content that isn't on tv, but that it's an established platform for viewing content on every device in existence. On the whole I think Youtube is still leveraging its significant power to provide a fairly open and unrestricted platform. If my company was being advertised there I'd probably want to have full freedom to choose the videos, and to demand, for example, that comments be turned off on every video with my ads.

Except you still need content to attract viewers and YouTube did that by creating a place where you could find shit you will never see on traditional TV. Without viewers you might as well be erecting billboards around Neptune. And advertisers will be willing to pay for ad space on YouTube, there are simply too many eyeballs for them to ignore.

Penn Jillette on Atheism and Islamaphobia

transmorpher says...

I used to think the same thing, because that seems logical, because you're a logical person, but for a fundamentalist's mind, it's not the case at all.

ISIS themselves have stated in their magazine "Dabiq" that the war and bombing is the smallest concern for their motivation. Sam Harris reads this magazine, and about 29 minutes in to this podcast, the magazine goes out of it's way to mention that US/Allied invasion is not the motivator.
https://www.samharris.org/podcast/item/what-do-jihadists-really-want/
The truth is much scarier than my rational imagination could have ever come up with.

Most extremists also aren't people who have been affected by war and just want revenge or have mental war scars. The people flying the planes in 9/11 for example were western university educated, engineers, doctors. And other extremists often have grown up in western countries.

These people are fanatics

diego said:

i wonder what these terrorists guys are all butt hurt about? oh right, we declared war on them and have been actively bombing them for over a decade, so easy to forget!

f they're from a war zone (take your pick- just in pakistan hundreds of innocent children have been killed just by drones over a 5 year period).

Penn Jillette on Atheism and Islamaphobia

My_design says...

Actually, yes. That's 100% correct.
Read some of the post WW2 books from the German perspective about what happened during WW2. They are very enlightening as to what people thought they were a part of. The guys that were shooting at American/Canadian/British and other troops on D-Day, those "Nazi's"... They had all been fed a steady diet of propaganda. They were told that the Nazi party and Hitler had united Europe under a single flag for the first time ever and that the Allied powers were coming to try and take that away. In many cases they didn't know the horrors that were being committed upon the Jewish people, sometimes just a few miles from their town. Sounds a lot like the situation in the middle east, except I think most people in Isis know what is going on and actively cheer for murder because their religion demands it.
Now I do think that within National Socialism as well as Islam ,and for that matter any idea (looking at you Christians), there is a potential for people to use the idea in order to corrupt others and spread hate. I think it's perfectly fine to hate those assholes.

Securing a suicide bomber, Iraq

My_design says...

You're happy that they get the bomb off, but are terrified for the kid. He's probably been taught nothing but hate for most of his short life, you hope he finds some quality of life and some sort of peace. But he's probably the same age of many of the fighter ISIS throws out on the battlefield with little or no regard for their lives. Hell I don't think the kids themselves have any value for their own lives. They've been fed so much crap from their "enlightened teachers".

Liberal Redneck: ‘I hate that son of b----‘ Donald Trump

bobknight33 says...

Obama ran on HOPE and CHANGE and look what that brought.
Worse than Jimmy C.

What a train wreck, domestically and internationally.
And now he is listed as one of the the worst US President.

Dick heads like you voted for this man not because of experience but because he is black. ZERO experience! YEA that is a good enough reason.

Vote for Hillary because :
She is a Woman
She is a cheater ( DNC scandal)
She is married to a pedophile
She is too faced on woman's rights
She is part of the corrupt ruling elite
She has foreign policy experience- everything she touched went bad.

YEA that is a good enough reason.

So what change do you want? Clinton sound like more of the same. OBAMA and Clinton are not taking ISIS seriously TRUMP, as miss guides as his words are will be taking ISIS out.

NUKES? same shit was said about OBAMA when he was running. BS .

You want change? Let ISIS take over. You'd have change you wouldn't believe. Or simpler still, nuke a major city. That would change it.

No, Americans don't want change, they want change FOR THE BETTER.

And that's not Trump.

Thunderf00t BUSTS the Hyperloop concept

nanrod says...

How do you know his mom is open to the air? My mom is in a plastic container waiting for us to scatter her remains in a sentimental location. Even if she was alive she would be one average target amongst 400 million. The WTC was one of a half dozen PRIME targets in the US on 9/11. The Hyperloop, on completion would become THE PRIME target in the US, not just for ISIS or Al Quaeda but for every nutjob who wanted to attract attention to himself. Hell, you'd probaly have rednecks out hunting taking potshots at it like it was a stop sign.

That being said, I'm still in favor of doing the research because even if Hyperloop never materializes, the research will inevitably have positive spinoffs. We should always dream big.

Not building something because someone can destroy it means constructing any building over 12-15 stories since 9/11 is ill-advised, yet people are still doing it...

Seth Meyers: A Message to Bernie or Bust Die-Hards

RFlagg says...

Yeah, I don't think they get it. This isn't something you fix in four or eight years. There will be way too much damage from a Trump Presidency to fix.

"Oh, so he's going to replace a conservative judge with another conservative judge", but that assumes there will only be the one vacancy during his term... there is a high likelihood that some of the liberal justices will quit soon... or die...

He will push executive powers to a new level.

He will destroy our relationship with our allies in Europe, and put them in more danger as he removes the US from NATO support in order to boost his friends in the Kremlin.

His actions against ISIS is exactly what ISIS wants to happen, because it makes lone wolf attacks far more likely. He'll be putting American lives, in our borders in far more danger.

There is way too much at stake to allow Trump to win.

It is far easier to build Bernie's movement with Hillary in office than with Trump. If nothing else, that is the fact they should be taking away.
