Cenk Uygur debates Sam Harris

RedSky says...

I'm finding it was a fair discussion on both sides. Harris is clearly more knowledge in the subject but Cenk came up with enough counter-examples to keep the discussion interesting.

Ultimately I think they've spent far too much arguing on the part/predominantly Islam to blame and whether Islamic is worse than certain other religions. Both are very subjective positions and I feel Harris comes off dogmatic here. He may be well placed to argue that people will undersell the role of Islam (perhaps due to political correctness) but to take a very absolutist position cheapens his argument.

I'm only half way but I feel they skipped over socio-economics far too quickly. The reason a middle class citizen in a western country can be radicalised by Islam (say ISIS) is because of the wellspring of specifically radical Islamic communities on the internet relative to other religions. This makes the chances of an impressionable individual stumbling on these much higher than say on a radical Christian call to action which I'm sure exist. As an area, the Middle East is also far more conflict prone and engender an immediate need to respond.

That Islam is so important in many Middle Eastern countries is in itself a product of their low socio-economic level. I suspect that in societies where religion rather than the nation state (which is corrupt or ineffectual) is the main cohesive entity and where low education may make many events we attribute to science unexplainable, it is no surprise that religion (Islam) is taken more seriously and literally. For example insofar as there being no effectual system of law and punishment to more humanely deal with criminals. Also because religion is such a more important glue of community, it's strictures are enforced more rigidly - more varied interpretations would lead to disagreements and risk breaking the community apart (or alternatively, I am saying that only communities with rigid ideologies have survived).

The reason why a Palestinian Christian behaves less radically than Palestinian Muslims on average may also have manifold explanations if it is true. If we accept that many religious groups are linked globally, it is arguable that western countries with their more moderate Christian view are a moderating influence relative to the more radical average global interpretation of Islam. Perhaps with suicide bombings being such an Islamic stigma, it is an activity they as a community have actively tried to avoid? Perhaps anthropologically being in the minority in a community engenders less radicalism and more passive behaviour?

John Cleese on Stupidity

In order to know exactly how incompetent you are as a surgeon, you need to have some level of competency. If you were completely ignorant of the body, you might think you could just cut out an organ and glue someone back together. You must have some level of understanding to know you don't know enough.

Well... I know perfectly well that I'm not competent to be a surgeon, and that's not a consequence of my being competent to be a surgeon.

I thought it was AMAZING! I wish I could own one, but I want V 2.0 with color changing hands and faces to 'paint' pictures as well as geometric patterns. I would wait minutes watching this to get the time from it.
If you can't wait 20 seconds while being entertained by awesome art to know the time, it sounds like you need a watch! ;-)

Hand Made Beautiful Dining Room Table - The Priceless Gift

Sniper007 says...

I did this exact same thing - that is, build a hand made dining room table for my wife. I didn't care about using reclaimed lumber, but I did want to avoid using glues. I used lag bolts and screws - I figured it would last longer than glue. Also, I used about 1/10th the number of tools he used. But I did use a sawsall and a drill.

I used all pine, but did a faux aging process with vinegar and steel wool, and black tea. It turned out awesome (after 12+ coats of spar varnish on the top... ug). I have two matching benches. It's all very rustic, durable, and functional.

Very cool video!

If Walmart Paid Its Employees a Living Wage

Asmo says...

It's not a chicken/egg argument...

Big corps cut the costs and cap wages, then the government is forced to assist people so they don't starve or become homeless.

Why do you think wages have stagnated in the US while profits have soared?

But okay, I'll huff some glue and try to accept your world view. Government ends assistance. Instantly, Walmart loses a huge chunk of government income (they no longer profit off the items they sell to food stamp holders) and now they have to bump up wages by 4 bucks as well. Of course, why didn't we all see it before, Walmart would do these things out of the fucking goodness of their black cold dead hearts and accept a huge cut to their profit margins...

Hang on, the glue is wearing off... Yup, you're just a moron...

bobknight33 said:

Why blame Walmart? Why should I hire you at $13/hr knowing that the government would subsidize that wage by 4 bucks?

I would just hire you at $8 bucks and let you get assistance if you needed it.

Its the governments fault.
The government should just stop giving assistance if you have a job.

Then Walmart employees could not afford to work at the low wages.
This would force Walmart to raise its wages to compete for workers.
and the Mac and cheese would 2 cents. Same result and we each shopper pays for the increase.

David Blaine Freaks Out Ricky Gervais

poolcleaner says...

There used to be a magician at Knott's Berry Farm that demonstrated this trick pretty close to the audience and then explained that he had trained for years to create the pathway through his body for the sword to pass through.

The arm is particularly easy because of how the muscles are arranged around the bone. It passes right below the biceps. Not much going on in this particular, dare I say "easy" to pull off location of bloodless stabbiness.
I don't know if the Knott's magician is still there or not, but it was a "magic" show that explained the science behind older, more simplistic tricks like this.

Also included were lots of different types of electricity stunts (static electricity, powering light bulbs through people, etc.), which have fallen to the wayside with magicians because most people nowadays understand electricity and it's not as gut wrenching as this scar tissue build up dealio.

I upvoted for Ricky's reactions and David'd ridiculous goading, but the trick itself is le sigh.

The magician at Knott's had a fairly visible scar on both sides of his arm, as he likely performed the trick A LOT. Serious needle mark action. lol. Blaine probably rarely performs this trick and perhaps used other material, like make up, latex or some such material, glue, creams, etc.

four horsemen-feature documentary-end of empire

alcom says...

@artician

Even if the models for the decline of empires are inexact, poorly sourced or even exaggerated, they are doing so to combat the overwhelming force of the status quo that feeds us a constant stream of comforting, mind-numbing bliss through mass media, mostly delivered though TV news, advertising and cleverly veiled in the actual entertainment that the audience enjoys.

It's hard to mount a comeback against a presupposed cultural truth supported by any form of economic interest. The tobacco industry, for example, mounted powerful misinformation and doubt as scientific evidence slowly leaked out that smoking was harmful. People just don't want to hear that the way they live and what they "know" to be true is going to change and that personal choice is going to have to be limited to some extent.

The same is true for global warming, deforestation, species extinction, pollution, etc., etc. You can resist the "ineffectual mumblings" of Hitchens, Chomsky and the like, but you do so to at your own peril. People like you are the do-do bird in this scenario. People like you are the 2 pack-a-day smoker who thinks they've been smoking for 20 years and feeling fine so why quit now. "Screw the scientists, they're all out to make themselves rich so they concoct these cackamamy experiments to 'prove' they need more research funding." Okay, it's your right to dismiss the advice of people smarter than you.

This video follows the same vein as Peter Joseph's Zeitgeist series (which I suggest you watch or rewatch for shits and giggles.) The idea of consumption tax seems a lot easier for our system to adopt than Joseph's idea of a "Resource-Based Economy." It just sounds more fair that those consuming resources pay back into the system and less airy-fairy than some socialist "to-each as to his need" idea. And let's face it, it's right on a social level. It's just too hard to get there based on our current economic and political structure.

Our wasteful way of life is just unsustainable. I don't think anyone can deny that the ponzi scheme of FIAT money is eventually going to collapse because the balance of wealth is way out of whack AND ONLY GETTING WORSE. And the USA is at the top, and yet owes trillions in funny money that they can only pay back if they stop building missiles and tanks. But I think we all know that when the shit hits the fan, we're going to want to get behind those tanks to ride out the storm of resistance from the 99%. Not the privileged 99% in the west, the 99% of destitute, impoverished poor that build the toys, sew and clothes, glue the plastic Walmart crap, and GROW THE FOOD that we want.to have cheap. We're doing this all on the backs of the "free slaves" in undeveloped countries: Columbia, Bangladesh and on and on.

Search your feelings, Luke. You know it to be true.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Republican Shutdown Threats

chingalera says...

sounds good on a blog maybe but one scenario of what will have to happen before people see trees in this forest of shrubberies is rendering into glue, the health care and insurance scamstym (which is what these institutions are) THEN, we systematically make examples of the families and beneficiaries of the scam (public executions would be more than appropriate considering their crimes), and we do this for the next 100 years. (because after 60 years the world has all but forgotten the inevitable end of massive control grids and their perpetrator'(s) methods. The empire never died, it has been given a green-light to refine her, mass-ass-fucking techniques

Ain't gonna happen without major shocks from without because from within, it can not be corrected without a revamp of critical thinking for the masses....who are largely ineffectual robot-slaves.\
