Watching A Horror Film As A Young Boy

visionep says...

"Friday the 3th Part 5 : A New Beginning"

The girl was Tina and the guy was Eddie.

I didn't watch many of these movies, but my dad took me to Poltergeist when I was 6 and we didn't make it through the whole move. Some of the same fears and lack of understanding ring close to the memories I have of those times.

Fair point on acceptance, I guess seeing people on TV smoke it and continue to be productive members of society has its benefits in dispelling the fear around it. Not the best comparison but kind of like how the Cosby Show, Eddie Murphy in 48 Hrs helped bridge racial tolerance in the 80s by exposing whites to black people on TV and in movies.

Totally with you guys on the hypocrisy of policy, and the libertarian argument.

I don't know how much pharmaceuticals actually care about pot legalization. I mean at this point the likes of Pfizer don't do that much actual research. They buy up other drug companies (Allergan is the recent big example) as well as benefiting from government funded basic research.

If anything what they've become specialized in is getting the drugs approved and adhering to regulation (which they probably helped draft and make complicated to keep their advantage). So if anything they should be well placed to be the first to sell pot based drugs in scale when they get fully legalized.

Prisons and law enforcement is a different issue, they do lose out a lot.

Surfer Garrett McNamara Injured at Mavericks

They're nearly always towed in by the jet-skis. It's almost impossible to paddle into waves that size, and when someone does it's usually pretty significant.

Eddie wouldn't tow.

That was sick. I can't even imagine the balls of steel it takes to paddle for one of these waves let alone make the drop and try to ride one.

"Some of the guys aren't even remotely smiling" Amy rocks it

Asmo says...

You seem to be offended that Ulysses spoke up that he didn't find her funny, and have taken it to the nth degree (really, analogies re: anal fisting?), but a big part of Amy's speech/performance was the idea that she has always been a bit unique and saw no reason to change herself to conform to others ideas of what she should do or be.

So why do people who do not find her funny suddenly owe you an explanation as to why? Why is it even a point of analysis? If the hypothesis is that if you're not a feminist, you're more likely to not find her funny, is it not also possible that feminists are more likely to find her funny because they subjectively want her to be funny? Aka confirmation bias.

Amy doesn't seem to mind that some people don't find her funny, so I don't see why it seems to irk you so much.

ps. Tina Fey is hilarious in ways Schumer has never managed imo, as is Amy Poehler. Similarly, I find Eddie Murphy funny but never really got much of a laugh out of Richard Prior or Bill Cosby. That doesn't say anything about my values or attitudes towards women and black men, it's just a subjective opinion based on what they say or do.

My question really is -- IF YOU ARE A FEMINIST, are you more likely to find Amy funny? IF YOU ARE AWARE OF THE BODY AND SEXUALITY ISSUES OF WOMEN, are you more likely to find Amy funny?

...

I'm just curious who "you" is and if it might have a bearing on whether or not Amy is funny to you.

Tina Fey thinks she is funny. Tina Fey is a feminist. All the people I know who like her are feminists.

Bill Maher and Fareed Zakaria on Islam and Tsarnaev

MilkmanDan says...

@newtboy @ChaosEngine --

I think there are a LOT of political/geographical influences that exacerbate underlying problems, like ChaosEngine is saying. But, a lot of the underlying problems can be traced to the religions themselves too. And while extremists / fundamentalists in Christianity and Islam are both very very bad, I don't necessarily think that both religions are "indistinguishable" in terms of generating those extremists.

Bill thinks that Islam is worse about generating those people than Christianity and other religions. That's where the "motherlode of bad ideas" thing comes from. I tend to think he's at least partially right -- but social/political/economic/geographic issues are certainly a very big influence that he doesn't usually touch on. And in the video Fareed makes a very good point about many Muslim countries NOT having high rates of extremist incidents that tends to support the importance of those other factors that aren't directly tied to religion.

Bill might come across as anti-Islam more frequently (especially of late), but I think he's really quite equal opportunity anti-religion in general. But one of the ways that he perceives Islam being worse than Christianity is that if you make fun of the pope, or suggest that he's a pedophile or something, you're a lot less likely to end up dead than if you say something critical about Mohammed.

As shitty as Christianity is / may be, in the west we've progressed far enough that at least we can criticize its faults without (too much) fear of being killed for pointing them out. And THAT has been very helpful in the rapid diminishing of Christianity in Europe and the UK, even though we haven't caught up in the US yet. I think that is where Bill makes a fair point, and something that potentially counters Fareed's seemingly more rational / steady Eddie take on the issue.

Blind French Boy Sings B.B. King's Everyday I Have the Blues

oritteropo says...

From http://aveugles.org/felix-impressionne/ this was filmed at the summer camp of the Fondation des Aveugles du Québec (Quebec Foundation for the Blind). (and therefore *canada)

Felix was born 3 months premature and his retinas detached due to oxygen toxicity at birth, and at first they were unsure if he would ever talk... so his family is very happy that he has turned out to have such a talent for music.

Felix loves BB King, of course, but also Les Colocs, Bernard Adamus, Stromae, Robert Johnson and Eddie Lang. He takes advantage of the summer camps to bring his guitar and put on a show.

It also says some other stuff about how the camp provides opportunities for blind children like Felix, and they hope he continues to flourish through music.

Classic Cinematic Masterpiece: The Thing with Two Heads

EMPIRE says...

I can see it now:

"Eddie Murphy.... Adam Sandler in: "Two Headed Freak!" A remake from the 70's classic "The Thing With Two Heads.

Eddie Murphy is Maxwell Fielder, the successful CEO and founder of a bio-tech company, who is dying from a degenerative disease.

Adam Sandler is Jake Antonelli, a door-to-door salesman, who stumbles unto a murder scene and is wrongfully thought to be the culprit, but hasn't given up on finding the real killers.

Maxwell Fielder's bio-tech company R&D department, manages to convince the state to have a convict become a volunteer for a temporary head transplant."

No need to thank me Hollywood. I'll take my check now, please!

Reverse Racism, Explained

Asmo says...

The only difference between "racism" and "reverse racism" is that RR is tolerated. eg. Eddie Murphy, Delirious. Plenty of jokes at the expense of white people. Where was the hue and cry?*

Newt's pretty much right, racism is racism. I'm of the opinion that we let everyone crack jokes at everyone else and stop being so fucking sensitive.

With that in mind, we are talking about a comedy bit where the guy uses hyperbole to ramp up to the punchline about white folk not being able to dance... Perhaps we're being a bit too sensitive about it and should just enjoy the joke? ; )

*Not that I'm complaining, that shit was hilarious...

U.S. Patent #1329559 A ~ Tesla's Valvular Conduit

Drachen_Jager says...

This might work on air, because you can compress air, but I'm pretty certain it won't work on water.

Water is not a marble. It's not even millions of marbles, though that might better illustrate how it would move through the 'valve'. In reality the water is going up all those side channels AND the central 'smooth' channel all at once. The back eddies from the side channels will serve to help guide the water flowing up the main tube and if you can get ANY suction out of that sucker at all I'd be amazed.

Like I say, air is more complex. It might work there, but the efficiency would be so low I can't ever see this replacing a standard pump.
