Don't Get Neil Tyson Started on Water Towers
Someone asked Mayor Ed Koch: (mayor of New York City from 1978 to 1989)
"What is your favorite thing to do in Manhattan that you can do nowhere else?"
"Count the water towers within my sight from my terrace."
I don't know why I remember that but, now that I've finally used it here, I can let it go.
Whoever threw that paper
So, he got (penaliz/fir)ed?
Tape Tapping
Meh, I buy it. He has to work within the limits of the tensioner, and how to get the velocity across the head reasonable and consistent seems like a hard problem to solve. I think there's probably more going on than just hooking some reel-to-reels up to a mixer, and it would be very interesting to know how he does it. Neat, though.
ed:
Could be he's just getting clicks and pops from some of the recorders and feeding that into an electronic drum trigger module.
tapes stretch. looks fake.
The Check In: Betsy DeVos' Rollback of Civil Rights
@newtboy
Your being dishonest and unfair to people with stuff like this:
"predicting so many of the educated would go along for short sighted, purely tribal reasoning, that's tougher."
and
"people have been claiming white men are the downtrodden powerless whipping boys.
I saw an op-ed in the nytimes back when the supreme court nomination was hot and had hoped the author's opinion were a minority. Segments of this Daily Show clip and your own feedback make rethink that. The op-ed wanted to concisely show how dangerously right wing and extremist current Justice Roberts was. To do this, the author stated that the Justice own chilling rationale for one of his decisions should tell us everything we need to know about him: "To stop discrimination based upon race, we need to stop discriminating based upon race"
Being insulting and dismissive of people's frustrations at being racially discriminated against as your post appears to do just makes for more division still.
Liberal Redneck - Nuclear Dealbreaker
It was nothing more than Obama's political pledge. with no legal standing and Trump back ed out of it.
@bobknight33
Sorry but you're clearly delusional to think it was Obama's actions alone or even his idea. Obama didn't make this "mess", he didn't even sign it .
Firefighter Reinstated After Spitting on Black Toddler
They might not have had an option, Firefighter's union may have forced them to rescind it until he is proven guilty.
Tags are crazy wrong again. News applies, law applies, equality applies, and terrible could apply. *nochannel
I read the op-ed and the original article, it sounds like there were witnesses. Hopefully if he is guilty, it will be handled correctly.
John Oliver - Mike Pence
One of Jordan Peterson's claims, that the left has settled into higher ed and wants to shutdown debate in favor of indoctrination, is openly on display in the video. All 3 staff from Wilfrid Laurier state it as contrary to the university environment to present a debate on use of pronouns, or to allow the subject to be debated, save that student's are FIRST taught and thoroughly prepared to know which side of the debate is right before hand.
One of them even dismisses Peterson's claim that you can be convicted for failing to use the pronouns requested by others as baseless and contrary to all evidence. Mean while the Ontario human rights tribunal clearly states that is exactly the case. link below.
If you are find with higher education abandoning reasoned debate in favor of indoctrination then you don't need to care. Of course, here in Canada we aren't facing the same risk you American's are of finding the tables turning and the indoctrination landing in the hands of tea party or trump types.
Still, keeping free speech and reasoned debate a cornerstone of education is extremely important to maintaining a free society in my opinion and the video is a window into dark corners hell bent on shutting that down.
http://www.ohrc.on.ca/en/questions-and-answers-about-gender-identity-and-pronouns
I fail to see the relevance of that. Whether the staff are right or wrong only changes my opinion of the staff, not of Peterson.
If I tell you I hated Hitler because he was a vegetarian, I'd imagine you think that was a pretty stupid reason to hate Hitler, but I doubt you'd change your own opinion on Hitler just because I'm being unfair about one thing.
Trampoline fail
That seems like a relatively mild and controlled impact for such a catastrophic break of a big bone.
Ed: Oh yeah, also. Ew, gross.
Liberal Redneck: NRA thinks more guns solve everything
Snopes included excerpts from at least two peer reviewed studies directly on topic that seem to contradict your contention....why dismiss it offhand?
In a peer-reviewed paper published by American Law and Economics Review in 2012, researchers Andrew Leigh of Australian National University and Christine Neill of Wilfrid Laurier University found that in the decade following the NFA, firearm homicides (both suicides and intentional killings) in Australia had dropped significantly:
In 1997, Australia implemented a gun buyback program that reduced the stock of firearms by around one-fifth (and nearly halved the number of gun-owning households). Using differences across states, we test[ed] whether the reduction in firearms availability affected homicide and suicide rates. We find that the buyback led to a drop in the firearm suicide rates of almost 80%, with no significant effect on non-firearm death rates. The effect on firearm homicides is of similar magnitude but is less precise [somewhere between 35% and 50%].
Similarly, Dr. David Hemenway and Mary Vriniotis of the Harvard Injury Control Research Center found in 2011 that the NFA had been “incredibly successful in terms of lives saved”:
For Australia, the NFA seems to have been incredibly successful in terms of lives saved. While 13 gun massacres (the killing of 4 or more people at one time) occurred in Australia in the 18 years before the NFA, resulting in more than one hundred deaths, in the 14 following years (and up to the present), there were no gun massacres.
The NFA also seems to have reduced firearm homicide outside of mass shootings, as well as firearm suicide. In the seven years before the NFA (1989-1995), the average annual firearm suicide death rate per 100,000 was 2.6 (with a yearly range of 2.2 to 2.9); in the seven years after the buyback was fully implemented (1998-2004), the average annual firearm suicide rate was 1.1 (yearly range 0.8 to 1.4). In the seven years before the NFA, the average annual firearm homicide rate per 100,000 was .43 (range .27 to .60) while for the seven years post NFA, the average annual firearm homicide rate was .25 (range .16 to .33)
Additional evidence strongly suggests that the buyback causally reduced firearm deaths. First, the drop in firearm deaths was largest among the type of firearms most affected by the buyback. Second, firearm deaths in states with higher buyback rates per capita fell proportionately more than in states with lower buyback rates.
Are you calling them liars?
"Downvote for lying".
Oh really? Lol.
I've produced peer reviewed research supporting my views. StukaFox produced none.
There are opposing research papers of course (it is a contentious issue). But it takes a very short sighted person to produce a limited set of ABS data (lol, 2 years) and a Snopes article to declare that I'm wrong. Keep in mind I mentioned in my first comment that there were studies on this topic.
SNL discusses Aziz Ansari
This is EXCELLENT.
And I know how to talk about this subject that doesn't bring on the care....ful.
Talk about the socialization of our girls and how we need to empower them from a young age.
All the other ways to address this are valid and carry that minefield aspect to it.
And yes, we do need to train up our boys differently, to understand consent. That is a great idea.
AND if we teach our girls to empower themselves and stop making "nice", it doesn't matter if they meet up with a boy who WASN'T trained up to understand consent. Because she will school his ass. (Or as one lesbian op-ed writer said -- school HER ass, if a woman is on a date with another woman. The writer's experience was that women can ignore consent issues, too.)
Nobody has a time machine to go back to fix the past so the present is different. So let's talk about the future, yeah? That is what we can have a productive effect on.

Officer disciplined after getting angry over White Privilege
Pretty f***ed up when you get suspended for responding to a racist insult like a normal person and are expected to sit quietly and be racially insulted by your boss.
If she had said "you can't understand because you're black" and black officers stopped her from continuing in the same way, there wouldn't be a question that they did the right thing.
Punishment doesn't really seem proper, how about training instead?
Btw-he got angry over being racially insulted, not over white privilege.

ABC News: Purity Balls: Lifting the Veil on Special Ceremony
No, it's not really a no brainer. The few studies done, when other known factors are considered, showed that virgin marriages had <2% difference in satisfaction, probably within the margin of error....divorce rates are obviously skewed because most virgin couples are extremely religious, which accounts for lower divorce rates...it doesn't mean they have happy or successful marriages.
STDs and unwanted pregnancy are easily avoided with responsible safe sex...granted, most teens aren't very responsible.
Your reasoning is flawed...if Christians raise Christians, (and I assume you think the same goes for other religions) where do atheists come from? Also, you do know that children given abstinence only sex ed, usually Christians, have the highest rates of teen pregnancy and STDs, don't you? Very few follow church instructions once outside of church, that's why less than 5% of marriages are by virgins.
It's really a no-brainer that those who wait until marriage will have better outcomes in life. Teen pregnancy and std statistics tell us that very plainly.
The reasoning for this is simple:
Christian parents raise Christian children. That means, no premarital sex because fornication is a sin. That means you don't date someone except to see if they are suitable as a spouse. That means that as teens are not ready for that kind of commitment they don't need to date. That is why their parents serve as gatekeepers for their children.
The biblical role of a parent is to train their children to know and serve the Lord. It is not to let the world in and allow their children to fornicate in the name of personal freedom. It seems alien to a secular audience because you don't know what kind of life God requires you to live.
