ICONIC Esports Moments: EVO Moment 37 - "The Daigo Parry"

Elon Musk's 'Dota 2' Experiment is Disrupting Esports

Jinx says...

Dunno if I'd call that cheating. I noticed in the showmatch it seemed to adjust its creep block without any vision of Dendi's, but I think they said since that the bot doesn't know what it doesn't have vision of. I mean, I agree it has a massive advantage due to a sort of almost latency free interface with the game while us humans have to do all sorts of shit before we can even begin to make a decision, but then nothing about this competition is equal. You might just as well say it is cheating because it was able to play more Dota 2 in two weeks than any human could in their lifetime...

Magicpants said:

It's not an apples to apples competition. The bot is cheating because it has perfect knowledge; it can look bounding spheres and exact positions, maybe even knows the enemy cooldowns, etc. Basically it's using an aimbot that can always react faster than a human.

What they need to do is require the bot use vision, either only give it access to the frame buffer, or better yet require it to use a camera pointed at the screen. (some day I'd require it to use a mouse and keyboard)

Battleborn - Borderlands + Dota?

A Summary Of Steam's Stupidest Move Yet!

HadouKen24 says...

The way it was set up, the mod developer did have the choice whether to charge or not. The final price point was also at the mod developer's discretion.

The 25% figure sounds low, but it's the same cut that developers of hats and skins for TF2 and Dota 2 get for their sold items--and there are people making a living at it.

Also, after Valve's 30% cut, the Bethesda looked at what a fair breakdown of what was left would be. Valve--30 Bethesda--45, and modder--25. If you just look at the portion after Valve takes its cut, Bethesda took 65% of what was left, and the modder took 35%. Which is typically what a development studio gets back from sales from a game publisher.

The 25% sounds really low if you're not familiar with how this kind of thing usually works, but it's actually about what content creators typically get when they're given a percentage from a publisher. It's a lot higher than some industries--authors usually only get 10-15% royalties on book sales, and even then only after the first 10,000 books sold.

newtboy said:

Actually, you seem to have said it's up to Valve and the game developer (also Valve often enough), not the mod developer. Did I misunderstand?

True, you didn't do a break down of the 75% (apparently actually 70%?)....but in the case of Valve games, Valve gets 75% (70%?) and the mod developer 25-30%.

The mod maker seems to not get the option of making their mod free...at least that's how I read your description and took the video.
It makes sense to me that the mod maker only gets 25-30%....they only worked with the tools that the game developer spent hundreds of thousands-millions to develop. I think if you count total man hours to create, they would be getting over paid quite a bit at 25%. It's like saying people who write fan fiction should get 75% of anything they can make, and the series creators and distributers should split what's left.

I think they should leave it up to the mod developers how much to charge, but I can support the split. If you make a good mod that 100000 people 'buy' for $10, you just made $250000 for what amounts to playable 'fan fiction' made at home on your free time.
Just how I see it.

Overwatch Gameplay Trailer

ChaosEngine says...

I don't knock Bliz for trying to give their characters some character, I knock them for doing it badly.

As for gameplay, the information I've heard so far is that the gameplay modes will include payload and control point maps.... hardly ground breaking.

but you're right, I was unfairly dismissive and I hereby amend my comment:

it's TF2 and DOTA/LOL without the humour and style.

Besides, I think you're reading too much into what I said.
First, it was an obviously flippant comment, not an in-depth analysis of the game.

Second, if you read the whole comment it was

My first thought was "so it's TF2 without the humour and style"
(emphasis mine). So I was literally describing my very first impression, and I stand by that comment.

I will say that after more consideration, the concept of a team based FPS with moba-style heroes could be interesting. I suspect it won't be for me though, for the same reasons I don't play DOTA or LOL; I simply don't have the time to learn all the characters and their counters.

Jinx said:

... I still won't knock Bliz for trying to give their characters...some character. The multicultural lineup of caricatures was a well established trope long before TF2.

All that aside, your comment wasn't simply that it lacked TF2's style and humour, you also dismissed any differences in gameplay. I am commenting on a gameplay video. My rant was more directed at this assumption that the game is the same as TF2, sans perhaps decent writing. I thought this trailer demonstrated some nifty looking mechanics that TF2 certainly doesn't have which were apparently overlooked in favour of pointing out that both games had turrets. or that it was "TF2 without style or humour".

In the interest of helping I'll try a brief explanation of game simplified as far as I can.

DOTA 2 and games like it have you controlling a single hero character much like in Diablo or any of it's derivatives. You play it as teams against one another, with the goal in essence being to destroy your opponents base. Each team starts out with half the map, and has defensive structures(towers) on their side that attack anything near them. Finally, there are typically several paths from between bases along which AI controlled waves of units are sent from each of your bases. Killing the AI units, enemy heros, and towers all gain you experience and money that you can spend on upgrades of various sorts.

Shame Dota is so impenetrable to spectators that haven't played the game. I imagine a lot of the excitement from this clip needs context beyond even the simple mechanics of the game. I've mostly stopped playing Dota now but its such an enjoyable game to watch atm. Great casters/production, lots of prize money and teams with a lot of character. Winning formula.

I was screaming like a girl when I watched it live. Unashamed Navi fanboy here. I think this was more misplay by iG though, and some smart drafting by Navi. They consistently gave away Siren knowing that as long as they could get Enigma or Tide the Song was as much a set-up for them as it was for their opponents. Dendi's Rubick play in that tournament was the standout for me. Stealing Ravage after Ravage was amazing to watch. Nice to see Enigma getting some more play again recently now that Magnus fell out of the pool a little. Isn't anything quite as hype as 3/4/5 man Black Hole.

MORE BLIZZARD: HEROES OF THE STORM Trailer

Hearth Stone is just so so, but I'm looking forward to this. From what I've seen and heard, it sounds to be a very casual MOBA experience... more Smashmuck Champions than DOTA 2/LoL. Purge, one of the bigger names in DOTA 2 posted a video of his impressions (enjoyed it, but doesn't see it being a competitive game since there is no last hitting and no items): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ip3I-7H6CQ
