Big Red - 1964

StukaFox says...

But . . . but . . . I'm not afraid of being buried alive in a box! I'm somewhat scared of being buried dead in a box, but not so much the destination as the process of arriving at that locale.

Sure. What can I help you with?

Getting up close with currently erupting Icelandic volcano

BSR says...

Not a problem. Would you like an "in the dark of night" pickup?

Florida is void of volcanoes so there will be a small upcharge for the second final destination.

Really, I would like to see some natural cremation ceremonies at flows like this. It's not often people can get so close so easily, and that would be like combining a funeral pyre and Viking funeral in one.

What’s Driving California’s Mass Exodus?

newtboy says...

It bears noting that more people are born here than left, even when you subtract deaths the population is still growing. Note, there's a housing shortage of near 4 million according to them, if California was the failed state they pretend it is, there would be a housing glut.

It also bears noting that with all the "anti business" regulations California remains the fifth largest economy in the world. Note how many billionaires that made their fortunes here are in the exodus crowd, California produces billionaires like a product.

I lost count how many times they mentioned Austin as a main destination, but I know Texans, and especially Austonians, HATE Californians and for decades have complained that Californians have ruined Austin, over regulated everything, and made it nearly uninhabitable. It also bears mention that one reason the state went dark and dry is they privatized their utilities with little oversight and predictably those companies deferred repairs and upkeep. That's pretty bad for business....so is the less skilled and educated workforce.

Don't let these dishonest people fool you, San Francisco is not representative of the state, and using it as a measure of housing costs is as dishonest as can be.

I noticed, most people leaving make under $100000 per year and can expect to make less where ever they go, while most moving here make over $100000 a year and can expect their earnings to rise.

This piece was incredibly biased.

Don't be a sucker

This is fantastic. Thank you for posting.

While he doesn't really get into politics, a while back Destin from Smarter Every Day had a brief discussion on the topic of "political grace." Basically, don't hold people's beliefs against them, as they may come to them with entirely good intentions. A challenging concept to actually practice, particularly when everyone can probably think of many examples of "how the fuck can anyone possibly believe this insane bullshit" that they've personally encountered. The audience members in this video are a solid example of why political grace matters though, as none were villains but some made some truly egregious decisions. We should look for those who preach unity and forgiveness, and be wary of those who sow division.

Why Snatch Blocks are AWESOME (How Pulleys Work)

moonsammy says...

I love Smarter Every Day, but I worry that if someone ever figures out how to combine laminar flow and snatch blocks that Destin's brain might literally explode.

The Egg

I am the stranger in a strange land...both of us getting stranger by the day.

According to this, that means killing everyone including rocketman to become the god I'm destined to be.

Sailing The Sea Of Stones

cloudballoon says...

I think we humans can afford a few beach destinations for a couple of years to help out the GBR, especially considering the dire state the GBR is in now.

Reading from Wiki, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pumice, it is not harmful to the fishies and even got lots of commercial value to it.

newtboy said:

Reading closely, it has the potential to be beneficial in certain ways, but there's no guarantee any of the infant coral it brings will be able to establish themselves.

I keep wondering what it's going to do to beach ecosystems in the area. I'm sure it's going to be bad for tourism, and could be horrible for fish. I hope someone is studying what it's done to the ocean chemistry.

Why Everyone is Going to Iceland Lately

StukaFox says...

Another reason? Icelandair offers dirt-cheap fares to Europe from the US, provided you're willing to transfer planes in Iceland. They allow you to stay in Iceland for a week or so and then continue on to your destination without charging you any additional fees.

STRAPPED INTO A SINKING HELICOPTER (with U.S. Marines)

ChaosEngine says...

Funny, I started watching this thinking the same thing Destin did.... "I'm an experienced diver... I'm super comfortable being underwater, even upside down and in enclosed spaces"

and then they talked about letting your sinuses flood... and my brain went "nope, not having that".

*quality video about not panicing in a tough situation.

Also, I had kind of assumed that being able to swim was a prerequisite for a MARINE!
