Woman pepper sprays couple eating outside without masks

diego says...

well this hits me close.

I live in chile, in a rural area that was one of the few not in quarantine in the area. i have a bakery and since march even before govt mandate we shifted to takeaway and closed off the shop to customers, and reduced our shift to one person on site for only 4 hours, with PPE. a week ago, a guy from out of town came (taking advantage there was no quarantine here and thus notaries like the one next to me are open) and asked to use the bathroom, my employee refused and the guy then made a one minute video showing 2 people show up without masks, he walks up and starts berating them for not respecting the law and everyone there (mostly old ladies) basically got too scared to defend themselves, so the video looks bad. we ended up on the news, shut down, huge fine, for customers' behavior outside our shop- all because of a video that intentionally made it appear like we were serving people normally when that wasn't the case.

so im now more sensitive to the corona righteous as well as these short viral videos in general. unless those people eating outside were following her around and intentionally coughing on her, there is nothing to justify her using mace on them, but i agree that the video doesnt show enough to establish that. people everywhere need to adapt to the new reality and im all for prevention including hard quarantines where necessary, but we also have to be reasonable about how we approach one another and understand there are acceptable risks, such as having picnics or playing tennis, and unacceptable ones like not wearing a mask indoors or in groups.

You're almost right, some few unprofessional doctors say let >75% get it and build herd immunity. They're nuts, that's a guarantee of 10-12 million dead Americans at current reported death rates, and >triple that when you realize that without ICU care the death rate rises to 15%, near 45 million dead, and we are already at and over capacity.
Some doctors (likely many of the same irresponsible unprofessional morons) suggested taking Hydroxychloroquine was a good idea, until professionals proved them 100% wrong.

~4% REPORTED deaths, but we now know if someone gets it, recovers but with devastating lung and brain damage and dies a few weeks later of lung failure they don't count that as an official covid related death even when the death certificate does, so it's definitely higher than 4%, as if that's not high enough.
And what's the percentage that have lifelong debilitating effects like either permanently destroyed lungs or severe brain damage to name two?

Opening while cases are still rising, in direct contradiction to the CDC AND Whitehouse guidelines, guarantees another shutdown for longer, and the loss of far more mom and pop shops in the long run, so absolutely yes it's worth it.

Easy to say others should go back to work when you work from home.
Edit: in places where it CAN be done safely, including a minimum of guaranteed social distancing, masks, and sanitation at all times, I'm all for returning, but many if not most stores/shops can't, especially with the anti-maskers throwing fits. Our local stores limit customer numbers and some will act as personal shoppers for anti maskers and serve them curbside. We have had 200 cases county wide so far in the highest risk state, so it's working here so far.

Only kids under 10 are lower risk, kids over 10 are the same risk factor as everyone else, and under 10 can still bring it home to those more at risk. Restarting schools in states at high risk, nearly all states right now, is a guarantee of a longer, more deadly, more costly second wave.

First of al not ALL agree to stay shut down or to mask up.

% of deaths to infected is small. Is It worth shutting down and loosing mom and pop shops and much more worth it?

I say mask up and go to work.

Kids are the safest demographic.

Karen, Please Just Wear A Mask

Digitalfiend says...

Sitting or walking outside in 40C weather? Ehhh...ok I can understand not wearing one but try and keep a reasonable distance from other people. But inside a public building or a store when you KNOW that the expectation (and courteous thing to do) is that you wear a mask? WEAR IT. I don't get these people having a freak out and throwing things around or trashing the store. If you're really against wearing a mask, then freaking order your shit online and stay away from other people.

Hopefully that woman that walked over to another customer and coughed on them was charged.

When stores say you must wear a mask, you wear it or GTFO, it's the store's right and moral decency to not let you in. Those that assault other customers & throwing products should be arrested.

Here's a feature request I have myself:

I'm very used to writing in Slack and using emotes provided there, which are also standard characters used everywhere (e.g., in SMS, etc.).

We should support short-codes for emotes, so no longer just our custom little blue faces, but actual standard emoji characters via things like 👍 which would render a thumbs-up.

Any +1s on this feature request?

Some of the link's criticisms are nitpicking.

Calling herself a 'legislative aide' to describe 'working for senator Biden' - that's like when a 'receptionist' puts down 'customer communications liaison' on their resume.

She gets her years of employment wrong by 1 year, decades later. I can't tell you the year I started my current job. I would have to look it up. Same for every job I've had.

Having one of her supposed degrees denied by a university is certainly suspect. Which at this point could still turn out to be a database problem, or some other cock up. *Possibly*. *Possibly not*. It could also be her exaggerating her own qualifications, coming back to bite her in the ass.

In any case, at least her accusations are old and she didn't pop up out of nowhere at a suspiciously convenient time in politics.

Biden's accuser is now considered discredited to the point that they are going back and looking at legal cases she participated in and overturning cases because she's a well established liar.

Companies are made of people. They might have a different set of values than you, but my guess is that they aren't much different.

Most companies right now know that everything is messed up and are trying to use this time of low expectations for companies to do "better" stuff for their employees and their customers since some of the pressure of Wall Street's expectations has been lowered.

An example of how corporations are like sociopaths. If a person stood up and gave a speech taken from the text of these ads, you'd be wondering what the fuck's wrong with this person for making the whole thing about themself. You'd also be wondering why broadcast news is carrying it live every day.

DUUDE I was checking my bank account, seeing I still don't have a deposit, read a news story about HnR Block customers being affected by some kind of mismanagement. It's probably nothing but we'll never know because ppl in charge of oversight have all been removed from their post.

BUT THEN I REMEMBERED!!! I know someone who HATES SOCIALISM and would absolutely despise the idea of everyone getting money for free. Dude, just message me and you can give me YOUR check.

That is...assuming you actually believe all the things you spout off about socialism, big government, and people getting money for free, and personal responsibility. LOOK MAN, i know you're a principled person, so you're looking to get rid of that money and want to return that check. Instead of that, get in touch with me, I'll eagerly await your reply because I could use the cash right now.

I really hope that you haven't been just shoveling piles of bullshit and are just saying things that you don't actually believe in. WHAT AM I SAYING, OF COURSE YOU WOULDNT JUST SAY ALL THOSE THINGS!!! I know you're a man of action and not just words. You say you hate socialism and people getting free money from big gov, so you'll happily hand it over.

Thanks man, I look forward to your contact about the money that you got that you don't want because you're not A FUCKING HYPOCRITE LYING PIECE OF SHIT WHO WILL TAKE IT WHEN IT'S COMING HIS WAY BUT DOESN'T WANT THE SAME HELP TO GO TO ANYONE ELSE.

Who is this? Bob has never once replied with such decent English or well researched arguments. Makes me think this is a cut and paste except the last line. What's your source? OAN? Breitbart?

$100?! Try millions in donations to his campaign that he's consistently treated like a private piggy bank. Despite his promise to fund his own campaign, he does the opposite and funds himself with his campaign. Pharmaceutical companies stand to make billions if everyone takes it, he knows who butters his bread, and so do we.
Before you say it's not enough money for him to sell out, remember he sold out a career ambassador for $300000 from Russian backed Ukrainians.

Exactly what anti Trump media am I believing? You don't know where my information comes from, do you? It must drive you crazy to not know which reputable source to discount, deride, and denigrate.

97% of all media is ANTI TRUMP? You're not that dumb and must realize this can't be true. Could it be that 97% of all fact is anti Trump because his actions are indefensible? Seems more reasonable and likely.

Trump is pushing it like a cure, and Giuliani was thrown off Twitter for saying it was one that's 100% effective, a pure dangerous lie. Check his portfolio, I bet he's got stocks in it too.
Talk to ex or current military, the biggest customers, they'll tell you they would rather have malaria than take it again. In the private medical world, it's a drug of last resort because of the life altering bad effects (and which are you implying aren't bad with the quotes?). When you're going to die without it, it can't hurt. When you're thinking it's a cure and taking it when you aren't even sick, like many are based on Trump's sales pitch, it definitely will hurt many that might otherwise be fine.

Con man bad.

bobknight33 said:

The report cited by the HuffPost is from a New York Times story that said: “Trump himself has a small personal financial interest in Sanofi, the French drugmaker that makes Plaquenil, the brand-name version of hydroxychloroquine.”

Trump’s personal financial interest, however, does not include a stake in Sanofi–and the New York Times did not claim it did. Instead, Trump’s financial disclosures show that his three family trusts each had investments in a $10.3 billion Dodge & Cox mutual fund that owns shares in Sanofi, the world’s fifth-largest drugmaker by prescription sales. As of its latest disclosures, those holdings amount to just 3.3 percent of the fund’s holdings.

Trump’s most recent financial disclosure forms lists holdings in the Dodge & Cox International Fund valued between $1,001 and $15,000. That means Trump holds a maximum stake in the mutual funds of $45,000, giving him an indirect interest in Sanofi of $1,485 at the most.

His “financial interest” in Sanofi, which has a market capitalization of nearly $58 billion, could be as low as $99.10.

Fuck your right! Trump can make $ pushing the drug $100 bucks --WOW

Why do you believe EVERY THING the media pushes about Trump? 97% of all media is ANTI TRUMP . Your not dumb and must realize this cant be true.

Also the drug is an alternative that is being investigated. All the "BAD" effects are the same for its original intended use but still prescribed?

Orange man GOOD. MSNBC etc BAD.

Hoarding An Entire Store's Toilet Paper Inventory

Here in Toronto Canada, we had these same panic buying of TP just the same as in the USA, Australia and other countries, no stock anywhere last week. But today the supermarkets has them on sale (~$10 CDN for a bag of 30 rolls.... that's like $7 USD) but under 1 bag per customer limit. All the TV news said the stock will be replenished soon.

What I'm worry about though, are the cleanliness of fresh produce. I've seen lots of a**holes coughing of fruits & vegetables AFTER they had their pick....

God damnit Chug.

HerbWatson says...

I'd prefer they don't get bred in the first place, and that part falls on us, the customers, to make better choices at the supermarket.

You have the choice of not drinking any milk at all if you are genuinely concerned with water use.

newtboy said:

You would prefer they get put out in an unusable field to starve, as long as they aren't eaten? If they serve no purpose, they won't be cared for, but they'll still exist.

If the dairy industry is gone, beef ranchers would just fill the veal gap, so different young cows still die under that plan.

Switching to non dairy isn't ecologically sound too....especially with almond milk for many reasons.

Capitalism Didn’t Make the iPhone, You iMbecile

newtboy says...

Eventually. My brother was online before there was an internet, trading programs for his Apple 2 over the phone lines, and the web existed for years before the possibility of profit, and much longer before any profit was realised. The nerds (myself included) drove the expansion for quite a while, but I don't deny commerce has made it ubiquitous and fast. Companies want you to enjoy the experience of buying from them so you come back, so they have an incentive to continue funding advancements that benefit the market, making more potential customers.
There are many incentives not based on profit too, as you mentioned. I don't think it's an either/or equation.

Didn't iPhones basically create the smartphone market?

vil said:

But it (the internet) took off based on the possibility of profit. Got stolen from the nerds.

Of course basic research needs public funding. No direct profit - no market value. Some capitalists (entrepreneurs, people who invest their private property) look beyond direct profit and fund science, or arts, people are whimsical.

Iphones need a market. Without a market who would care if someone invented the Iphone?
