It refers to the attitude of the speaker. If the speaker means to praise the subject along any dimension it is favorable attention. If instead the speaker intends cruelty toward the subject it would be decidedly unfavorable attention.

Is this not an obvious difference to all of you? I don't think this is a gendered issue at all. I find it cruel to equate unwanted (if you prefer) sexual attention with the complete debasement accompanying internet abuse.

4 jokes, each with a punchline of violence or sexism in some way, shape or form. A Holocaust joke, a sexist joke, a dead baby joke, and an animal cruelty joke. All 4 of those are still things that exist "Now". There's still victims of the Holocaust, miscarriages and murdered children happen all the time, and people still kick chickens, and women driving jokes have been around since, well, women started driving.

It's NOT because of the joke that people do these things, it doesn't perpetuate it, it doesn't do anything to alleviate the levity of the issue, and yet we still consider these okay. However, there's apparently ONE thing that is not okay, only because it could possibly make light of the situation. Everything is okay, or nothing is. Sure, everything is all cute and funny, then you find your cat's lungs stuck in your vacuum filter. That's really hard to clean out, what with your girlfriend shrieking at you and threatening to call the SPCA and the cops. Then PETA sends out its topless death squad to hunt you down and while you're staring at their tits, they beat you to within an inch of your life with vegan pepperoni loaves. Then you find out that due to your upcoming animal-cruelty charges, your HMO has dropped you and you now face $100,000+ in hospital fees. All because your cat is funny.
