Food Channel Contest Time (Food Talk Post)

chingalera says...

Made these last night-I call em:

Chewy Sugar Cookies (monster version)

2 3/4 cups flour (sifted with:)
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder

I cup (2 sticks) salted, butter (softened)
1 1/2 cups whole cane sugar
1 egg
1tsp (or to taste) vanilla extract
3-6 tbsp buttermilk
some ground cinnamon, and some more sugar for later

sift dry ingredients into bowl
in a separate bowl, cream sugar, extract, egg, and a small glug of buttermilk until creamy
mix wet and dry ingredients and add just enough extra buttermilk to make the mix slightly sticky but not wet (or, the opposite of how you like your women)

NOW comes the monster part:

Add to dough, some pure grated coconut (unsweetened), dried cranberries, and fresh almonds that have been hit with the coffee grinder to chop and powder a bit)

Place the dough in the freezer while you preheat the oven to 375°F

on an un-greased cookie sheet, place small dollops of dough that has been rolled in some of the coconut/almond mix you set aside extra

on top of each dollop that you flatten slightly with a fork, brush-on some buttermilk on each dough-glob, then sprinkle with a sugar and a ground cinnamon mix

Bake for 8-10 minutes on second-to-top oven rack

Real panty-droppers these, bet ya can't eat just five

True Facts About the Aye Aye

braschlosan says...

If you give an Aye Aye an orange it will poke a small hole and scoop out all the good parts leaving the membrane between each slice intact. Cut it open and you have a perfectly segmented cup.

Give an Aye Aye a cut portion of carrot and it will create a hollow tube of carrot skin.

Give an Aye Aye a half coconut and it will turn it over (round side up), chew a small hole in it and scrape the meat out, even though it would be much easier to get it from the open side.

Weird obsessive little things.

True Facts About the Aye Aye

grinter says...

Aye ayes totally amaze me... and scare me...
"tap, tap, tap" with that finger that looks like the hook Egyptians used to pull your brain out through your nose.
Then "CrunX", those teeth bite right through your face... yikes.
Seriously, these things can bite right into a coconut, and then causally scoop the jelly out with that freaky finger.

Crazy, I just started my vegan diet today as well. I am excited, I had stuffed grape leaves (rice, onion, dillweed, and mint in a nice lemony sunflower oil) for breakfast I know that is weird but I really wanted em. Then for lunch: paradise island tempeh (orange juice, agave, ginger, coconut, lime juice, cilantro, cashews, pineapple, green onion, a minuscule amount of jalapenos mixed in rice... it was goooood) and a side of mixed broccoli, water chestnuts, snappy green peas and ginger. Then dinner was just a carrot and shitloads of dates. I have a feeling dates are going to be a major reoccurring theme YUM

You should get some dates, they help with DOODOOO and they taste like little caramel treats!! And they are good for you, I cant even believe it! Why have they hid from me for so long?!!

You gotta send me recipes!!!

Do you celebrate your birthday? (Kids Talk Post)

UsesProzac says...

I always make a cake of some sort on my birthday. I don't decorate it or anything like that. Just a yummy cake. I might put candles on top of it, because fire. I also make the cake for immediate family member's birthday. My brother prefers pie, so he gets a coconut cream pie. Etc.

I would never consider it a chore to make a cake for someone I love. I really enjoy baking and that selfish satisfaction derived from watching someone eat it happily.

I always get this happy sense of fuck all on my birthday. Yay, birthdays!

Every time I visit my family I want to get at least one Green River. It's not exclusive to Chicago, but it's limited in proximity to Chicago and I never knew that growing up. Now that I do, I treasure it when I can find it b/c it takes me back to my childhood.

I recently saw it in a local Meijer last St. Patrick's Day, having not thought about it in a great while, and said "OHMYGODGREENRIVER!!!" I proceeded to get gawked at and made fun of by my wife, moments later.

Also, I recently took the diliciously lime Green-River-goodness and mixed it with some coconut rum. DHEE-LEEESH-OOOUUUSSSS

What do you do for work ? (Talks Talk Post)

Shepppard says...

Monday, Thursday and Sunday, I wake up whenever I want, and leave for work at about 4:30 to start my shift at 5:30 as a line cook. Those three days I'm "Pre-close", so for about 3 hours I stay in my section and cook food in an oven (Things like Quesadillas, Nacho platters, etc.) Then around 8ish, we start getting rid of the other cooks and I take over two more sections, fryers (cook things like chicken wings / fingers / coconut shrimp, etc.) and Pantry (Mostly salads and deserts) until around 10:30, when I have to start cleaning my half of the line (the three sections I mentioned) and then I'll be done anywhere between 11-1AM depending on how busy the night was.

On Friday and Saturday, I work splits. I'll have to wake up at 11 AM, shower etc. And leave by about 11:30, it takes me about 8 minutes to get to the restaurant and once there, I start clearing out the dish pit, once that's under control I'll either head on line and help out cooking with the lunch rush or go back and help out our prep department. If I'm helping prep, I'll either prepare food for later use in the night, or portion something that's already been made. That'll last anywhere between 1-4 PM, giving me a break before the second half of my split starts at 5, where I'll come back and work until it's less busy, and will be cut anywhere between 7-10 PM.
