Master Of His Craft

AeroMechanical says...

I dunno, I can appreciate his style. If you've ever had to use one of those things all day long, day in and day out, especially on high things like ceilings and walls, it's exhausting as hell. The vibration just beats the hell out of you. Even when I was well used to it, I still had to use a work for five minutes, rest for five minutes pattern if I was going to keep it up.

U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville

GeeSussFreeK says...

O wow, long time no sift, sorry. Once my account got locked at work, I just never visited anymore.

But I got to head out to the rocket center for the random acts of intelligence show, it was pretty awesome. All the video here is just from one of the 2 building...so ya, worth a trip!

The Saturn was more amazing than I had imagined. I always knew it was big, but seeing it sprawled out on the ceiling is indescribable. Imagine a 30 story building filled with explosives, lit on fire and hurling itself into space...because that is what this is. I have lots of pictures if people want to see, I will surely share them.

Glad to see sift is still alive and well. The sift, specifically a video by @dag, basically changed the course of my life and I am now pursing a degree in nuclear engineering, so thanks for that. Anyway, if I can figure out a way to change my name, perhaps I can once again partake of some sift action.

TYT Republicans destroy and have no solutions

RFlagg says...

I think the Democratic voters failed to turn out for a few reasons. All the media made it seem like it was going to be a Republican win, even the "liberal media" was portraying it that way. This led to a defeatist "what can I do?" mentality. Another is that Democrats failed to really push a couple key issues, namely raising the minimum wage and equal pay for equal work. Heck, even just saying that minimum wage will be tied to inflation and go up with inflation each yet, even if it isn't fully adjusted to where it would be now, would have been a big step forward. They shied away from those, just like when they passed Obamacare they shied away from single payer or the government option that was promised and instead gave us an old Republican plan under the assumption Republicans would be glad the Democrats caved in and accepted a Republican idea.

The Democrats failed to deliver largely because Republican obstructionism. This isn't to absolve them of their failure during the two years they could have really moved forward with a true progressive agenda.

Fox News and the pulpit have the Republican voter base convinced to vote Republican, that Obama is singlehandedly destroying America (I'm surrounded by these people every day, I have to unfortunately live with them, I used to be a right wing, Christian Republican myself, then became a right wing Christian Libertarian before I actually started applying real critical thought to the economic impact of the policies as society stands now and became more Liberal). The pulpit has convinced these people that it doesn't matter Jesus said to help the needy and the poor, to heal the sick, and basically everything 100% opposite of the beliefs of the Republican party, to vote Republican anyhow, and it to be the Christian vote. They deny being Christian Reconstructionist while being clearly Reconstructionist. They say things like "if you actually think about it critically, CO2 is good for plants, so their argument is silly" and they accept it, because plants absorb CO2 they think that CO2 emissions can't be as bad as the environmentalist say it is, after all, greenhouses pump CO2 into them to make plants grow better. Again I was guilty of repeating that sort of non-sense. Then it occurred to me there are no walls around plants in the wild, there is no ceiling to help keep CO2 near where plants are, and the fact that very little of the Earth is filled with green (let alone the fact most plants are doing as much CO2 exchange as they can already).... that most of the Earth is blue... that yes the ocean absorbs CO2, but in doing to warms it and that drives massive changes including storms in of itself and learned the real consequences of CO2 emissions.

As Ralph Nader recently pointed out (http://videosift.com/video/Ralph-Nader-on-GOP-8482-s-2014-Wins) the Democrats can't just blame Citizens United or attempts by Republicans to try and limit voting among the poor, they have to take a look at the fact they didn't push the issues that most Americans stand behind but didn't push.

I like the idea of moving elections to the weekend. That probably would help more than some calls of late to make it a Federal Holiday. Most places don't close on Federal Holiday's anyhow, so that won't really help as much as moving it to a weekend... of course one could also argue that people might not want to take time out of their weekends to vote.

TYT Republicans destroy and have no solutions

billpayer says...

They did vote for the Democrats, decisively, Twice.

Problem is, nobody with a job could give enough of a shit to vote in these piss-ant elections.
And they're right. Obstructionist Republicunt$ have locked up Washington, crying like babies at anything Obama tries to do. Have we forgotten how they held the country to ransom over raising the debt ceiling ? Despicable

You've ignored the fact that they did it inside, so there's also the pull of the bowling ball on the walls and ceiling, and vice versa! ;-)

I'm pretty sure we agree on all counts except how detailed one must be when teaching simple lessons.

ShakaUVM said:

It's not falsifying details. It's nonsensical to pose the problem so that surface irregularities are taken into consideration. Or the fact like in this video the feather started below the bowling ball.

It's a trivial 3-body problem. You can represent them by three balls, one of mass Heavy, one of mass Medium, one of mass Light. As long as Medium and Light start at the same distance from Heavy, Medium and Heavy will always hit first. You can run this test in an orbital simulator if you don't believe me.

Son Buys Mom Her Dream Car

SquidCap says...

Well... My mom filled out a raffle ticket on my name when i was two, we won a SAAB 96 and traded it for this model, 99. Almost the same color (metallic paint was for US export model...). My family kept it for 25 years, it served us really well. I learned to drive with it and that thing handles like a dream (it has heavy steering but is is so stable and responsive, just wonderful, plus ours had aftermarket short gearbox from police unit and bored cylinders, small tweaks to oomph the torque for caravan use. Finnish police used SAAB for a loong time, it accelerated like a rocket..).

Seeing the inside of that just brings me memories. Mom, Dad, my big brother and me and a full sized double bass, all inside (you can't transport it outside when it's freezing, the thing can explode..). It meant that i had to ride shotgun, seat fully front and back against the front door, head on dashboard. Backseat folded and mom and bro at the back, equally cramped. We used to say that first comes the bass, then the family if they fit in and there is always room in the boot (joke.. ). The day he started to play cello was a blessing and a curse. Have you ever had to live with a person that learns to play cello? It's horrible but i paid him back when i got full blown PA in my room, cabinets from floor to ceiling.. Musicians family is always a bit eccentric and weird..

My dad still has SAAB (fourth one) as they are just amazing to drive, handles winter conditions like nothing and are great for long roadtrips. I just hope i can get him the Citroen CX he has wanted from his teens...

Porksandwich says...

Aint no way. If that thing had any kind of defect it'd turn into a pressure filled sprayer. While cleaning the floor sucks when it runs over, cleaning the ceiling and walls would be worse.

I do however wish we'd get over the low flow requirement for toilets.

DIY Magneto - Walking on the Ceiling

AeroMechanical says...

Okay, I'm way out of my depth here, but might it be possible to construct a whole body outfit with a gradient of iron content from head to foot such that with a sufficiently powerful, flat magnet on the ceiling you could approximate the inverse square law of gravity across your suit so that you could walk about on it (admittedly with some discomfort) almost as though you were walking on the ground? Falling over would be unfortunate, of course, but I'm just wondering what the theoretical problems would be.

Team Fortress 2 (TF2) - Did You Know Gaming?

RedSky says...

@Payback

I pretty much think it's the perfect casual FPS.

Similar to how nades aren't abusive, I think it's one of the few shooters where snipers are not blatantly overpowered. Most characters need several body shots to kill and some need several headshots when Medic buffed.

The class variety is also tremendous, and there's a significant skill ceiling to playing most characters beyond the usual FPS reactions. Knowing how to decloak and approach as spy, or perfecting rocket jumping is something way beyond what most modern shooters like CoD require.

Hats have never really bothered me. What has slightly is that it's become impossible to get access to most weapons without paying because of the sheer quantity.

Having said that, this really only kicks when you have 60-70% and the odds stack against you of finding the rest. It's not really a balance issue either as while there are definitely 'optimal' choices (say gunboats for soldier), none are anywhere near game breaking. Where they are (say, soldier's equalizer), they're usually rebalanced.
