Chicago’s Defund The Police Leads to Supermarkets Closing

newtboy says...

As usual, Bobby gets it 100% backwards and grammatically incorrect.

Republican policies always require a Democratic solution.

Supermarkets aren’t closing due to high crime, they largely never existed in these neighborhoods. More idiotic lies by the moronic pathological liar.
Whole foods? In a low income neighborhood? Who could have predicted that would fail? Only anyone with an IQ over 17…so not bob or the people who tell him what to think.

Edit: The hilarious irony with your position, bob, is that “defund the police” (admittedly a terrible name) had the goal of deTASKING police away from mental health calls (and other minor civil issues) that police tend to escalate into serious problems, charges and/or injuries or death requiring massive responses and burning resources when a mental health professional could usually de escalate the situation and get the patient proper medical care without incarceration or worse. It would allow police to focus on crimes like shoplifting, crimes you claim closed these never-existed supermarkets in low income area food deserts.
Side note, so you know, police funding hasn’t actually been cut. It’s still going up in almost every department in every state.

Who last balanced the budget, Bobby? Does your cult addled brain remember…or do you insanely think the answer is Trump? Likely the latter, despite him adding more to the debt and deficit than any two term president, and don’t ignore that he injured the state of the union more than any issue or person in history….and is a rapist.

Last Week in the Republican Party

newtboy says...

I don’t think you’ve been paying attention. 😉
Democrats have failed at some decent legislation because Republicans think “just say no” works for drugs and Legislating, it’s the Republican platform….and it’s a losing one.
There is no actual platform, they have no plans, no accomplishments. Only sedition, comforting our enemies, obstruction of legislation and justice, insanity and lies, praising Putin, and attacking each other for not cowtowing to Trump enough.

The Republican Party is too busy calling each other RINOs and crazy morons to campaign, and Republican voters are disillusioned again and will likely not vote. Those that do will be split between feculent and dishonest but sane old school candidates and the Trump/“freedom caucus” bat shit crazy nonsense candidates. They have no issues to campaign on thanks to Trump who made them the party of spend and spend. Economic superiority is now a Democratic trait, as is standing up to our enemies instead of cuddling up to them. What, besides “we aren’t liberals” do Republicans have left?

Not to mention the growing number of sitting representatives who are being made incapable of or disqualified from holding office by being convicted of felonies and/or giving aid and comfort to enemies of America…. Republican Congressman Jeff Fortenberry for instance, found guilty Thursday of 3 felonies and facing 15 years in prison. He’s still in office…an incumbent that’s going to have a hard time keeping his seat. Green too, being seriously challenged on being fit for office under the 14th amendment thanks to her support for sedition along with 6 others. Suddenly Republicans hate the constitution and want much of it abolished.

Also, Republican support by independents, the group that let Trump only lose the popular vote by 3million, no longer supports Republicans. Mid terms will be interesting, but a Trump in the whitehouse? Keep dreaming the national nightmare…ain’t gonna happen. It’s likely to be another Red tsunami like 2018, but never underestimate the stupidity of the American voter, anything could happen.

Is There an Alternative to Political Correctness?

SDGundamX says...

@Diogenes

I'm not sure I'm following what you're saying. Why should a reasonable person be pissed off at a third party calling out offensive language use? To use a hypothetical:

I jokingly call my brother a "retard" because he locks his keys in the car. We grew up in the 80s, so this this pejorative is something we are comfortable with and feel no inhibitions about using. My brother laughs it off.

Now let's assume this happens in a parking lot as we're standing outside my brother's car and a woman passing by overhears my comment and chastises me for equating stupid actions with people who have mental disabilities.

Should reasonable bystanders watching all this be pissed off, since my comment wasn't directed at the woman? On the one hand, my brother and I weren't offended by the use of the word "retard" to mean stupid. On the other hand, our very usage of the word "retard" in that particular way promotes and sustains a culture that already heavily looks down on mental illness and mental disabilities.

I'm genuinely curious about your answer to this. If I'm reading your comment correctly, the primary negative of PC language that you see is that some people feel smug when they call out other people on their language usage. But does the fact that some people are smug about it make them wrong in pointing out the offender?

"What is your mother's name?" A question that made me sob...

vil says...

When my older son was a toddler he would call me by my first name, funny but slightly unnerving.

Its their culture, peer pressure. BTW they probably dont call each other motherf*cker or sonofab*tch habitually. Its amazing how often insults in any culture refer to mothers, appears to be a soft spot. If you listen to the video carefully they dont want to disclose their mothers name publicly so that she could not be shamed (insulted) by others. Not because they dont care, rather because they do care, they just live in a complex society.

No, seriously, stick around. We can do this in a calm and structured manner, without you calling anybody asshats, I promise. Outline the points you think we all agree on and the points you think we disagree on, and we can start from there. Or, if you don't want to do that, I can offer my theories on what we agree on and what we disagree on, and you can correct me. Nobody has to comment on 'tone', because nobody will waste time calling each other asshats or sheeple or pedants or whatever.

(also I think the reason that videosift comments section is a ghost town is that the site design runs counter to actually following a discussion thread after the video disappears off the front page. I don't think videosift, as such, is a ghost town; people just watch more than they discuss)

Cop throws himself onto car and acts as if he were hit

newtboy jokingly says...

Nope, you have failed miserably. Also, all the name calling and assumptions show you for exactly what you are...someone with the mental capacity and maturity of a mentally defective, angry prepubescent teen.

You are just too hilariously ridiculous to ignore. I mean, really, you make a racist statement, someone shows you how racist your statement was, and you attempt to reverse the statement so you can then call the other person racist!? Wow! It seems you aren't just stupid, you're also dumb if you think that will work. Others have FAR better reading comprehension than you have displayed, and you've already been called out on your BS this time by others, proving that point. You started with the name calling and making assumptions, and you also complain that those things create 'someone with the mental capacity and maturity of a prepubescent teen.'...so that's how you see yourself, right?
Where's your 'beat', or are you still too much of a coward to say?
FAIL!

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Wage Gap

rancor says...

Folks, just ignore the trolls. The ignore button is right there. There's a clear distinction between rational counterpoint argument and these guys' bullshit. Over a course of years visiting this site, it has become painfully (literally) clear to me that they are not worth listening to, and it sounds like many of you have reached the same conclusion. They're on my ignore list, but I end up reading their comments anyway because you guys put their comments in quote blocks, which makes me sad.

Now, slightly more on topic, I'm always amazed at how well satire shows like this, The Daily Show, and Colbert produce the most interesting investigatative material. It's an interesting line to walk where they are not performing purely journalistic functions, so they're technically more free to cherry-pick parts of the topic for comedy/satire, but you can also tell they ARE trying to get to the nut of the matter most of the time. Further, the discussions we've been having on this page (the productive posts, at least) illustrate that we're actually holding them to journalistic standards anyway. Or at least argumentative standards; we see the segments of their shows as "not just jokes". What a great format. It also allows them to instead produce whole segments on calling out others (usually Fox) on their journalistic failures, which is an extremely important function but one not undertaken by most of big media.

Sorry for the essay. I like productive contributions on VS because reading the comments on CNN is just worse than YouTube...

The Long Game Part 2: the missing chapter

ChaosEngine says...

Interesting video, but I don't think he's saying anything new here.

It really does take a long time to get good at something (10000 hours seems to be the most common figure). For me I've been working at my job (programmer) for about 15 years now. So 15 years * ~45 weeks a year * ~ 35 hours a week of actual work (not counting meetings, phone calls and other distractions) = 23000 hours. So after 7 years was when I consider I became really good at my job.

Contrast that with my primary leisure activity, Aikido. I've been training for about 10 years and I usually do around 250 hours a year (roughly 5 hours a week give or take) that's still only 2500 hours. So I figure I'll be REALLY good roughly when I hit 60

@bareboards2 I am utterly stupefied by your ability to dismiss my argument whilst at the same time not addressing any single part of it. Without so much as questioning my reasoning, you've labelled me, stuck me in a box and judged me, calling on others to hear of your sadness at.....what? Detailed, thoughtful and politely delivered criticism?

The worst thing here is that if i were to suggest that your reply, or the content of this video, was "femscaping" or something similarly derogatory then you would have lynched me up on the nearest tree for sexism - the thing you want to stop. Yet when you dismiss a comment i make as something equally sexist and based entirely on my gender (because you sure as shit never once mentioned any part of my argument), that's absolutely fine.

Is it really beneficial to your cause to attempt to censor people who question the content of the message; label them, dismiss them and profess your sadness for the human tragedy of ignorance like a scientologist? A good conclusion with good evidence would not need your protection from my scrutiny.

If you think i'm on some sort of misogynist bandwagon, then you're dead wrong about me. I've criticised a couple of videos recently because i considered them to be supplying dodgy data or trickery. Whenever a video wants to make evidence based claims, i reserve the right to question their methodology and that is fundamental to any kind of evidence. The topic is entirely coincidental.

If you have a problem with my argument then by all means i welcome your criticism, but criticise the argument rather than calling me sexist names. What you did to me is no different to if i had simply commented "militant-feminist bullshit" without addressing any of the video, at which point you would have highlighted your plight and appealed to sympathy. But no, i offered a thorough explanation of my feelings, and i'm still the horrible mansplainer. No - i'm analytical, and i make no apologies for the damage that does to your cause.

Of all the people who offered detailed criticism of this video, one of them sided with you and the other didn't. Guess which one you engaged in discussion? I even offered you examples and reasoning, but no, i get just sexism.

Please, use "I" again and bring a few corroborators to support this premise lodged in your mind-Call my comments shitting with something other than an ego to lead with and perhaps a dialog may ensue.

I'm lacking in respect, huh? Fuck you, pal. I disagreed with you, and I did so pretty vehemently because I feel very strongly that you are wrong. Do you somehow think that you are entitled to judge everybody else by your impossible standards while staying safe from reproach and disagreement up in your ivory tower? And I'm the one with the ego, sure.

Now, look. I have two friends who are way into blacksmithing (and I'm actually going to try this out a bit when it becomes feasible for me to have a forge and anvil (I don't think my current neighbours would like it if I suddenly started pounding metal in my back yard)) and many others who have spent years working in construction. One of them even broke his back doing it. They have their primary skills and I've got mine, and while there is a slight overlap (since we all love to learn new things and tend to do so from each other), we all have to recognize that we are different people who are good at different things.

Because the really fucking simple truth is that life isn't perfect, and neither are human beings. We also have a finite amount of time and a finite amount of energy, and unless you are some sort of crazy person who doesn't have any limits and will work yourself until you keel over, you're going to have a few things you do well and a few things you do less well. Deal with it. What is happening here is that you've got some jacked up übermensch fantasy you can't possibly live up to, so you judge others instead of just taking your expectations down to a more realistic level.

Oh, and by the way - I love how your response was essentially just one big throbbing ad hominem. Don't have anything meaningful to say? Don't worry; you can always call the other guy an arrogant jerk! That'll show him! Nice job there, buddy. You really got me good.

Not only are the children of this new generation lacking in basic life skills, but they also have no respect. You are a prime example. Is your ego this large in real life, or do you have delusions of grandeur due to the anonymity that the internet provides? A well rounded individual should be able to both use their brain and perform menial tasks. It's not a choice of one or the other. So you took a break from reading and built a fence. Goody for you. A little exercise - what a chore. That's right, pay someone to work for you so you can sit around on your lazy ass all day. This is exactly what I'm talking about. Thanks for adding to the discussion and proving my point.
