Multi-Millionaire Rep. Says He Can’t Afford A Tax Hike

blankfist says...

>> ^ChaosEngine:

Honestly, that's kinda a pretty juvenile comeback. I expected better from you

I promise to internet to your liking next time.

>> ^ChaosEngine:

That analogy is wrong for all kinds of reasons. Firstly, the bully doesn't use your money to build services you can use.

Most of the federal government services I can't use either. War. Unilateral hegemony. Nation-building. Corporate welfare. Etc. Can you?

>> ^ChaosEngine:

You are free to not pay taxes to your government, you are just not entitled to do so while under the protection of that nation. If you do not wish to pay taxes to the US government, you are entitled to leave the nation and live somewhere else.

Emphasis mine. This is what's awesome about your comment: Isn't it always people like you (statist) that say if I don't like the system then get involved and change it? But here I'm doing that and pointing out a major flaw in "our" representational government, that the government is claiming it's spending more than it earns and spending the majority of that money on things the people no longer want, yet you tell me that I need to like it or get the hell out.

You know how many redneck neocons I've met in my life that have told me the same thing? Congratulations.

>> ^ChaosEngine:

If you don't like all the things your taxes pay for, at least stop being a hypocrite and using them. So, to start with, get off the internet (designed by DARPA and CERN, both tax funded agencies).

Translation: "If you don't like the services you're forced to pay for, you should stop using them but keep paying them!"

How about instead I could stop spending that money on... War. Hegemony. Imperialism. Corporatism. Crony capitalism. That option not good enough for you? You'd much rather I GTFO of the country?

And yet the real point of all this is you say the collection of funds is what's important, not what it's spent on. I think that's dangerous. Who cares how they collect. I care more about what this so called "representational government" spends that money on. I'm a bit disconcerted you don't.

Can you really not differentiate between how the money is collected and what it's spent on?

I guess as much as I can differentiate how the bully from my high school stole my lunch money and what he used it to buy.

Honestly, that's kinda a pretty juvenile comeback. I expected better from you, but what the hell, I'll bite.

That analogy is wrong for all kinds of reasons. Firstly, the bully doesn't use your money to build services you can use. Secondly the bully does not give you any option as to whether he'll take your money. You are free to not pay taxes to your government, you are just not entitled to do so while under the protection of that nation. If you do not wish to pay taxes to the US government, you are entitled to leave the nation and live somewhere else.

If you don't like all the things your taxes pay for, at least stop being a hypocrite and using them. So, to start with, get off the internet (designed by DARPA and CERN, both tax funded agencies).

Antihydrogen produced and trapped at CERN

BoneyD says...

Also from wiki:

The biggest limiting factor in the large scale production of antimatter is the availability of antiprotons. Recent data released by CERN states that, when fully operational, their facilities are capable of producing 107 antiprotons per minute. Assuming an 100% conversion of antiprotons to antihydrogen, it would take 100 billion years to produce 1 gram or 1 mole of antihydrogen (approximately 6.02×1023 atoms of antihydrogen).

(That's 7.2 times the age of the universe!)

Palin thinks climate change is "snake oil science stuff"

pmkierst says...

I love how she attributes the internet to free markets and america. The part most people think of as "the Internet", the WWW, came from government funded science in Europe (CERN). Neither free market nor American innovation. In her defence, Of course the underlying technology, IP, was developed in America. But still not through free markets, it was done by government funded research.

I want my corpse to be inserted into the CERN observation lab and bombarded with all kinds of particles at high speed. Anything that is discovered as a result would be named after me; think "The Throbbiton".

Angels and Demons vs. real life

spawnflagger says...

The audio felt kinda like GlaDOS in Portal for a second there...

This is a great video. Good Q&A, good PR for cern.

While watching Angels and Demons in the theater, when they first showed the antimatter trap/bomb scene, my friend and I busted out laughing! Those folks seated around us were confused and not amused.

The design of the Vatican archives didn't make much sense to me either, but I didn't really care about that.

Just walked out halfway through Angels & Demons (Cinema Talk Post)

Crake says...

I think I'll be watching it for the gadgets & locations & explosions (probably not in the cinema though), and to see a Hollywoodified CERN.
I actually read the book on a train trip from Rome to Geneva, so I couldn't help but visit CERN, and suffice it to say, Dan Brown went a little bit overboard on the Q division stuff there.

Why are they using the CERN to find the God particle?

I'll move off-topic a bit in defense of CERN and the LHC. Sorry, I can't help myself.

In short: they're not. First of all, the "god particle" is a dumb hype name popularized by the media for the hypothesized Higgs boson, a scalar particle the existence of which is predicted by the standard model of particle physics. The misconception is that, if found, it would 'explain all of physics', which is, again, a major overstatement. Secondly, they're using the LHC for a variety of different purposes - you should read the wikipedia article, because it's a fascinating experiment and people are, for the most part, largely ignorant or misinformed about it.
