Around Cape Horn (1929)

BSR says...

Wow! That's something you gotta be born into. The closest I've come to being a seaman was working on a scallop boat in Cape Canaveral. That was an new experience for me. I understand that boat now lays about 30 miles out from Daytona beach at the bottom of the Atlantic ocean. I guess I shouldn't have plugged that hole with bubble gum before I left.

Excellent narration and photography. I thought the narrator's voice sounded just a little bit like Norm McDonald though.

Car Hauler Vs Amtrak train

surfingyt says...

top comment:

"To those who wonder why all crossings aren't rebuilt so that auto haul trucks specifically can clear them... first, this would cost an ungodly amount of money - for one specific type of truck. Professional drivers wouldn't let themselves get caught in this situation. Carhaulers ride very low and their drivers know this. They know this as a fact. I'm a 30-year veteran truck driver, and that includes auto haul, and there is no way a professional auto hauler would have even attempted to get over that sharp crest.

Trailers only bottom out if the drivers puts it there. Trailers only hit low bridges if the driver puts it there. In short, trucks only go wherever the driver puts them - and a low-slung trailer is a hazard the driver is responsible for knowing how to negotiate. Period.

Absolutely no sympathy for this idiot who could very well have killed any number of people. My thoughts are with the locomotive crew, seeing that truck looming ahead and knowing this could very well be the end of their lives and there's nothing they can do about it."

The History of Portal

vil says...

I have probably mentioned this, but IMHO portal was invented by Terry Pratchett.

Discworld, Book 22, The Last Continent (1998)

The wizards looked at the gently rippling surface. There should have been several feet of solid wood sticking out of it.
“Well, well, well,” said the Archchancellor, going back in out of the cold air. “Do you know, I’ve never actually seen one of these?”
“Anyone remember Archchancellor Bewdley’s boots?” said the Senior Wrangler, helping himself to some cold mutton from the trolley. “He made a mistake and got one of the things opened up in the left boot. Very tricky. You can’t go walking around with one foot in another dimension.”
“Well, no…” said Ridcully, staring at the tropical scene and tapping his chin thoughtfully with the seashell.
“Can’t see what you’re treading in, for one thing,” said the Senior Wrangler.
“One opened up in one of the cellars once, all by itself,” said the Dean. “Just a round black hole. Anything you put in it just disappeared. So old Archchancellor Weatherwax had a privy built over it.”
“Very sensible idea,” said Ridcully, still looking thoughtful.
“We thought so too, until we found the other one that had opened in the attic. Turned out to be the other side of the same hole. I’m sure I don’t need to draw you a picture.”
“I’ve never heard of these!” said Ponder Stibbons. “The possibilities are amazing!”
“Everyone says that when they first hear about them,” said the Senior Wrangler. “But when you’ve been a wizard as long as I have, my boy, you’ll learn that as soon as you find anything that offers amazing possibilities for the improvement of the human condition it’s best to put the lid back on and pretend it never happened.”
“But if you could get one to open above another you could drop something through the bottom hole and it’d come out of the top hole and fall through the bottom hole again…It’d reach meteoritic speed and the amount of power you could generate would be—”
“That’s pretty much what happened between the attic and the cellar,” said the Dean, taking a cold chicken leg. “Thank goodness for air friction, that’s all I’ll say.”
Ponder waved his hand gingerly through the window and felt the sun’s heat.
“And no one’s ever studied them?” he said.

A rare view of the surface of a comet

elrondhubbard says...

I would love to have a sense of scale... How high are these 'cliffs'? Knee high?

Of course on a comet, gravity would be so light you easily might be able to bound from bottom to top even if they're as high as the Grand Canyon. You might even jump off altogether.

Dying in the name of freedom

StukaFox says...

- Covid
- "(...) get aids or be 14 and get pregnant."

Two of these things are not like the other...

"There are many risky behaviors that people choose / You either have free choice or you dont."

And some of them will get you put right the fuck in jail for a very long time -- like drunk driving and careless firearm discharge -- because they're FUCKING DANGEROUS TO OTHERS.

"I'm against the vaccine but realize that it was in my best interest to take it. ( 59, over weight, out of shape etc)"

Seriously, WHAT? You -do- understand what you just said, right? So let me get this straight: "Me me me me me me me me me and fuck you."?

So thank you from the bottom of my heart (seriously) for getting the vaccine for whatever reason you chose, but dude...

Buts its ok to be a gay and get aids or be 14 and get pregnant. Both are blights on society and costly of insurance dollars / government aid.

You either have free choice or you dont.

Find a video in a subreddit. Down at the bottom is a share option. Choose Embed.

I usually select dark mode in the options, then copy and paste the embed. I'm still trying to get &mute=0 to work. Sometimes it seems it does when I manually add it to the embed string, other times it doesn't. If you figure it out let me know, because by default the videos are muted.

Land of Mine Trailer

newtboy says...

From what I can find...timers and/or sensors that arm them after being deployed.
Weighted bottoms and/or little parachutes. Many types function in any position too, so upright doesn't matter.
Even ground based deployment is usually tossing them mechanically from a vehicle by the thousands, not by hand.

How did the mines not explode after being dropped from the air?

And how did they land with the trigger facing up buried in the sand?

Deep Dive Dubai - The World's Deepest Pool

bremnet says...

Total N2 build up in the bloodstream is time dependent. If they're flitting about, zooming to the bottom and back to the top with very low Bottom Time, then the risk is (relatively) lower. But (IMO) not worth screwing with, as the downside (getting bent) is no picnic. Whether in a hole in Dubai or out on the reef, plan the dive and dive the plan.

How come they don't get the bends soaring around between deep and shallow?
