"I did not care for the Godfather." | Family Guy

vil says...

Nooo. I remember my dad showing Godfather to my granpa from a smuggled VHS tape. Actually a betamax. Makes me biased. Maybe its slow for today but it was incredibly awesome... I do not believe its that old.

But come on, next time will someone complain about Tora, Tora, Tora or The Magnificent Seven now known as The Magnificent Seven (1960)?

Video World - The Death of a Video Store

This is sad

I too remember the good old days when my dad got a Betamax (yes! we had beta before VHS) and we would try to find a couple of movies in that format at the video store closest to our house. I still remember him looing for Blade Runner back then.

I also remember many years later, but several years ago, going into a video store and renting movies by the 4 or 5 each time, to take home and watch.

Good old days.

The saddest part of that movie? That a business owner at that age had to go work at customer service at a grocery store.

Watching A Horror Film As A Young Boy

SDGundamX says...

Huh, guess I was one of the few that saw a porno before I ever saw a horror movie. Guess I was about 9 or 10, older friend's dad was out of town, and said friend had found his Betamax porn stash so he invited all the kids in the neighborhood (boys and girls both) ranging in age from 8-17 to watch. The teens laughed their assess off when all us kids were completely grossed out by the first moneyshot we saw. Seriously, it may as well have been a horror movie for all the kids screaming "What the hell IS that?!?"

Learned a lot that day from the older kids, but mostly learned that 70s porn is cheesy beyond belief. Baum-chika-baum-baum!

How Sony's Betamax lost to JVS' VHS Cassette Recorder

SquidCap says...

He forgot the most important blow to the betamax: JVC licensed VHS, SONY refused to do it and wanted to take the whole video market as a monopoly. So VHS was available, in cheaper prices from multiple manufacturers and with ever increasing options while SONY and BetaMax had couple of models.. Not the first time SONY has lost something over greed, BluRay almost went with the same route (allthou there were several companies developing it from the start).

BetaMax cassette was 1h with the short play (and better quality), 2h with long play (later over 3h). Even on that machine he demonstrated.. The real reason for video cassette wars going for JVC was licensing and price dropped obviously with competition. But BetaMax was around almost for the entirety of video cassette history, collectors often wanted theirs in BetaMax for better sound and slightly better picture quality. Sound difference was noticeable, picture,, naah, not so much (i was there when this war happened...)

Sony was offered to join JVC before either had come out...

Ralph Wiggum's Original Voice Sucked

laura says...

God, I remember watching the first season on BetaMax. One of my friends had taped it off TV in the US and "smuggled" it to school in Brasil (against our parents' wishes) so we could covertly watch it in an empty classroom at lunch, because you "just HAD to see it!".

Wow. Good thing the HDD wasn't 100% used by the time they came accross that beaut. "Swimming lazily away"? That may be the creature's most desperate flight attempt possible given the super low-oxygen environment at that depth.

Interesting too that it's a VCR with a HDD. I want an underwater Betamax that records on LaserDisc.
