You forgot to mention Robotech, which was the closest relative to the Star Blazers series, as I recall. In fact, one season of Robotech was about a giant, lone space battleship fighting aliens in the outer solar system.

Interesting. I just reread info about the 1989 explosion in turret 2 of the battleship Iowa that killed 47 sailors. Looks like it was due to over-ramming unstable powder as part of an unauthorized 'experiment' using 5 bags of the wrong powder instead of the standard 6. Of course, the Navy covered all this up and blamed a sailor for killing everyone.

Permanently or temporarily 'crime and burglaries went up'?...by a statistically relevant amount or by .1%? ...by exactly the amount of armed robberies that no longer occurred (not armed, now it's burglary)? Could it be that cops had more time to police without worrying about armed thugs all day long and needing 6 officers to write a ticket to feel safe, so there's wasn't more 'crime' only more arrests? I assume you have a non-partisan Australian URL with the national crime statistics (both # reported and # of arrests) by year to verify your assertions and that this isn't wishful thinking masquerading as data? We've had plenty of 'gun control' in the US already. You can't buy a Vulcan cannon, a full auto without an FFL, a 20MM, a 9lb gun (battleship style), and thousands upon thousands of models have been 'banned' either federally, state wide, or by county/city. There are limits on clip size, silencers, selective fire modes, unregistered sales, etc....the list of 'gun control measures' already in existence goes on forever...but we'll "never get any"?!? What the hell could you mean? I think you may just be being contrary, no matter how silly it makes you seem.
"Illegal gun owners" are disarmed every single day in the US, any time they are caught with the illegal guns. Again, what could you possibly mean? That we won't get rid of 100% of illegal guns (as if that's someone's plan or a necessity to solve most gun related issues), so there's no reason to ever limit their availability to anyone? Huh?!?

The fallacy though is that there is a strong anti-gun movement. There isn't The pro-gun people desperately cling to that strawman fallacy any time there is a call for gun control.

The number of people who are actually "anti-gun" in the US are too small to politically matter, but who knows, as @ChaosEngine pointed out, maybe that will change someday as attitudes and technology changes, but that day is not today.

However, the majority of people ARE for gun control/regulation. The vast majority of Americans have no problem with armed citizenry. The debate is ACTUALLY about the level of armament. They want stiffer controls to keep them out of the hands of criminals and the mentally disturbed. And maybe some required training/certification for those that do choose to own firearms, just like we test periodically for drivers licenses.

Even the pro-gun people should (I hope) agree that nuclear arms should be under tight control and not in the hands of civilians. Should a civilian be able to own a cruise missile? a tank? A battleship cannon? How about one of those new magnetic rail cannons being developed? If you agree that these types of weapons should not be used by civvies, then you are pro-gun control.

The question is just one of degree. I completely agree that "assault" weapons is too vague a term and stricter definitions need to be created to define what civvies should and shouldn't have.

Precedent is already set. We have a constitutional right to bear arms as well as many other rights, but rights have been taken away countless times (with the consent of the governed) for people who have proven that they can be a harm to others, so you can't really argue that the 2nd amendment is inalienable. Many, if not all, rights have conditions to them.

There are ALWAYS exceptions.

Two things,
First, considering the dregs topping the box office (Transformers, Battleship), and what passes as 'smart' (Prometheus, Star Trek), I'm afraid a good chunk of the business can be more-or-less predicted.
Second, they're not pretending to be oracles, they're just doing stats. They are probably only providing ballpark estimates, and as they've been around for decades, it looks like they're doing fine.

Large publishers, whether it is for books, music, or movies, all rely on the same strategy: for every 10 works produced, they expect 1 to be successful and pay for all the others. I'm guessing these people are in the business of providing estimates to budget the 9 others.

Is Hollywood 'this' devoid of ideas? I guess they are. Oddly enough this has a lot of talent behind it, and it looks like it could be interesting. I mean Battleship looked stupid as fuck but was actually pretty fun.

There are many stories of a great flood in many cultures but one must realize that floods are not an uncommon thing, even floods that consume entire parts of the world. For example, there is evidence that the Mediterranean was formed by a flood several million years ago. But there is zero scientific evidence that the world itself flooded, or that 17'400'000'000 animals (2 of the 8.7 billion known species on the planet) fit on a boat about 2/3rd the size of the Titanic.
